You can't honestly say the thought never occurred to you. It strikes you that it most definitely has. You recall the time I visited last year, when I walked in wearing a simple blouse, skinny jeans, and had just got my hair and makeup done.

shedding sandbags ~ pt. 2
Chat was on top of the world. He couldn’t believe his luck. His only regret was that his girlfriend— could he call her that? They hadn’t exactly discussed much further last night— was so distant in his civilian life.
Marinette had always acted reserved and awkward around Adrien. He’d been envious of his other friends from day one, that Marinette was so much more comfortable around them. In fact, that was part of why he became so taken with her as Chat. Not only was she not awkward, but she was even more free with him than with her friends. He’d felt a strange satisfaction in the knowledge that she was most comfortable around him; that he saw a part of her nobody else got to see.
In light of recent developments, though, he was realizing just how dense he’d been— thankfully not nearly so much as Buttercup, but enough that he’d only just figured out he liked her. When she’d grabbed his shoulders and professed her love for him so fiercely, it was like he’d opened his eyes for the first time in his life. It was almost laughable how obvious it was, now that he could see it.
He hadn’t even had to think. If Buttercup was going to be such a fool, who was he to complain? Chat didn’t care if she still loved him. After all, he himself couldn't— and wouldn't— ever give up on his love for Ladybug.
But, walking up to the school entrance, he was again reminded of just how painful it was to interact with her as Adrien. No sooner had he stepped foot in the courtyard than she bolted up the stairs, miraculously not tripping a single time as she disappeared behind the banisters.
“Um, hey guys,” Adrien greeted weakly, as he approached Alya and Nino. “What’s up?”
“Yo dude,” Nino raised a hand for a fist bump. “Nothing much, just waiting for class to start.”
“Morning, sunshine,” Alya smiled as she followed Adrien’s gaze up the stairs. “Yeah, she’s been a bit fidgety this morning. Well, more than normal at least. She insists there’s nothing, but I think we all know there's something bothering her. I’ll get it out of her yet!”
Adrien hummed non-commitally, as they followed in Mari’s footsteps. As they entered class, once again Marinette dutifully avoided eye contact. Her gaze trained squarely on her books, she made a show of organizing and reorganizing the loose sheets in her binders.
The rest of the day passed in much the same pattern. Marinette would immediately escape any room Adrien was in, barely speaking a word while in his presence. On the way back from lunch, he’d managed to catch her talking to Alya, but she’d immediately clammed up as soon as he’d entered the classroom. Each time he approached her, her whole body would tense up, as she mumbled some excuse to get away. Adrien became more and more depressed as the day went on, only looking to get it over with, so he could see her as Chat.
+=====+
School had ended, but Adrien was immediately chauffeured straight to a photoshoot. As used as he was to these things, today was a new level of torture. Much to the annoyance of makeup and wardrobe, he could barely sit still, which only prolonged his suffering.
After two hours that felt like five, he was finally free to “practice piano” in his room. Quickly setting up his recorded practice, Adrien wasted no time transforming and leaping out the window.
In a flash, he was alighting on a certain balcony, silently making his way over to the skylight. Looking in, he found Marinette in her jammies, lying on the chaise, with a book open. He grinned, as a warmth filled his chest. Rapping thrice to let her know it was him, he quickly made his way through the skylight, and dropped onto her bedroom floor.
“Hey kitty,” Marinette smiled sweetly, leaning up from her reclined position. “How was your day?”
He marched over to her, and kneeled in front of her, embracing her waist and burying his face in her lap. “Just missed you, Princess.”
“Silly kitty,” she giggled, as she ran a hand through his hair. Her fingers caught on his cat ears, and began scratching a gentle rhythm. He didn’t even attempt to curb the purr of satisfaction emanating from within him, eliciting another giggle. “You’re so adorable when you purr, you know that?”
“Mhm,” he hummed, tightening his grip on her waist. “Only for you, my love.”
Marinette nearly let out a gasp, butterflies erupting in her stomach at his words. At the same time, she felt Chat stiffen under her touch. Realizing he must be worried over moving too fast, she managed to tamp down on her heart rate before bringing a hand to his cheek, and raising his face to meet hers.
“I love you,” she whispered, her tone firmer than usual. “You know that, right?”
“Y-yeah,” he stuttered, gazing into her loving eyes.
“Which means I want you to love me too. So please,” she lifted his face up, as she bent downwards to meet him. Their lips locked for a scintillating second, before she pulled back. “Never stop calling me your love.”
Never. The word hung in the air for a moment, slowly sinking in for the both of them. Marinette hadn’t even realized how sincere she was when she said it, but now it seemed like there were never another choice. Chat felt that promise burrow deep into his heart, and a delicate hope took hold there. He nearly teared up as he gazed back, equally besotted.
“Never,” he breathed with an unwavering conviction, rising up to kiss her again. He rose from the floor, climbing into her lap. The fit was awkward, but they made it work. His next words were whispered into her ear as he gripped her tight. “My love, my heart, my soul, my princess.”
He leaned in again, and the couple lost track of time. Marinette forgot about Adrien, her mind consumed with her feline partner. Luxuriating in the love he lavished on her. Chat forgot about the way Marinette avoided him in school. So long as he could feel her love and her passion, he was more than content. And oh, how he felt it, wrapped in her arms, on that chaise.
The pair parted eventually, Marinette going down to get some snacks and tea. When she came back, she found he had already set up Ultimate Mecha Strike on the console, and had prepared pillow fort complete with a spot for her to snuggle in beside him.
Smiling so wide it hurt, Marinette placed the tray down, and picked up a controller. “Now, don’t think I’m gonna go easy on you, just because you’re my boyfriend, alright?”
Chat returned her smirk, cheeks glowing as he leaned into her space. “Well, maybe I’ll let you win since I love you so much, ma belle.”
A flushing Marinette shoved his face away, and turned a determined gaze to the monitor. Picking out a macaron, she grumbled. “Yeah right, kitty. Now, let’s just get this show on the road!”

>>oh, how the turn tables
Monday
“Hey Adrien,” Marinette called cheerily as she entered the classroom on Monday. “Had a good weekend?”
Oh, what a weekend he’d had, indeed. Scarce were the moments where he hadn’t been preoccupied with the recent revelation that Marinette used to have a crush on him. Naturally, the girl in question had been at the forefront of his mind, and so he was having just the slightest difficulty meeting her eyes as she greeted him. It certainly didn’t help that he was also plagued by the memories of her casually feeling him up during their session on Friday.
“H-hey Mari,” he managed to get out, averting his gaze as she walked past his desk to take her seat behind him.
“Sup, dude. You seem chipper today,” Nino said to Marinette.
“Oh, yeah! I just started working on this project, and I’m super excited for it. I can’t wait to get home and work on it,” Marinette was positively glowing, and it occurred to Adrien that she was talking about the clothes she was making for Chat. For him.
Adrien felt a nudge in his side, and looked up to see a smirking Nino. “It seems someone finally wised up to his feelings, huh?”
It was at that point that Adrien realized he must have quite the rosy complexion at the moment, his embarrassment when it was pointed out certainly not doing him any favors. He buried his face in his hands, and groaned, “I have no clue what you’re talking about.”
Nino just laughed, as the bell rang, and class began. Adrien continued to force his attention strictly on schoolwork. Thankful for the seating chart, he made sure to keep his head facing front the entire time. He’d never been so grateful as he was today for his driver waiting outside of school. Both for lunch, and at the end of the day, he was the first out of class, making a beeline straight for the waiting limo.
By the time he reached home, and was preparing for patrol, Adrien was wondering just how he was going to make it through another day, let alone a whole week, having to face Marinette at school.
“Why don’t you just ask her out?” Plagg put in, just as he was setting up his piano practice recording. “Problem solved, she’s clearly still into you.”
“Come on, Plagg, you know I love Ladybug,” Adrien brushed his kwami off. “Besides, she’s clearly trying to get over me. She’s not even stuttering around me in school anymore. God! How could I have missed that? It was so obvious looking back!” he added, reflecting on his own obliviousness.
“Yeah, well it was torture just watching you two dance around each other when you both clearly have it bad,” Plagg snickered, as he finished up his wedge of cheese.
“Yeah, whatever,” Adrien huffed, calling out his transformation. Plagg snickered all the way into the ring. In a flash, he was out the window, and on his way to patrol.
<===>
“Something bothering you, minou?” Ladybug turned to face him as they wound down their patrol. An uneventful evening had left Chat to marinate in his own thoughts, leaving him distracted and spaced out.
“Oh, it’s…” Chat struggled with wording his answer. “I guess you could say… I found out someone likes me—civilian me— and has for a long time. But I only found out because they’re moving on from me.”
“Oh,” Ladybug’s response was curt, as she pushed down the eerie feeling of familiarity in that situation. “That… that sounds… rough?” She didn’t quite know how to respond, but knew she wanted to be there for her kitty, as it was clearly bothering him.
“Yeah… you could say that,” Chat chuckled, not quite with the mirth he usually had. “It’s just… I- I’ve never really thought about anyone else romantically. No one apart from you, m’lady.” He turned a small smile towards her.
“I know,” he quickly continued, “how you feel, and I’m at peace with that. Or at least I’d like to believe I am. So, I’ve mostly moved on from you, but now I find out that this girl has… had a crush on me. And now, I can’t stop thinking about her.”
Ladybug remained silent, a whirlwind of emotions running through her head—and only her head, because she couldn’t afford to let her heart get involved. No, she wouldn’t let that nagging hurt in, swallowing down that sudden taste of bitter jealousy.
“It sounds like you really like her,” she finally landed on, forcing a sympathetic smile. “I’m… sorry she moved on, just when you realized. I… have been in a similar situation.”
“I… do you really think I like her?” Chat turned to her now, eyes wide and uncertain. But, underneath it, she saw that sliver of adoration and hope in his expression, which until recently she’d had a monopoly on.
“Well, you can’t stop thinking about her, that’s a pretty good sign,” Ladybug reasoned, watching his face closely. “Do you think you don’t like her?”
“I don’t,” Chat started, but paused. Ladybug watched as he seemed to turn inward, reflecting on his memories of this mystery girl. She nearly gasped when she saw his face melt almost immediately. The softness in his eyes, and the warmth of his smile, and the glazed look in his eyes. She recognized that look from one place, and one place only: the mirror, when she daydreamed about Adrien. Scratch that—even she wasn’t as gone as Chat seemed to be in that moment.
“She’s an amazing girl,” Chat started again. “She’s… kind and smart and funny and just so… so good. She’s so adorable when she trips up, but so determined and talented. I… I don’t know, bugaboo, she’s so perfect, I don’t even know why she would like me. But I… I’ve always loved you and I don’t know if I could love her like she deserves, when I’m still moving on from you.”
Ladybug felt something bittersweet in her chest. The way he spoke about this girl was how she’d always wished someone—until recently, Adrien—would speak about her. She was flattered at how much he seemed to love her, Ladybug, that he didn’t realize how hard he seemed to be falling for this other girl. For just a second, she felt a fierce possessive impulse. She could tell him he’s making it all up, because he found out about this girl’s feelings. She could regain a monopoly on his affection, just as she was realizing how much it meant to her. She could—
“I don’t know if you hear yourself,” Ladybug managed to get out, voice soft but steady, “but it seems like you love her plenty enough already. I don’t think I’ve ever heard you speak like that about—” me, “—anyone else before.”
Chat stilled, eyes still wide, but a growing realization in them. His voice was airy and light as he laughed, “Plagg was right… I really do like her!”
For some reason, Ladybug felt a further twist in her heart at those words. The kwami that was always flirting with Tikki, always joking about the bug and cat being made for each other. He too had decided Chat was better off with the mystery girl than with Ladybug.
“M’lady, thank you so much!” Chat beamed at her, the cloud over his head already evaporating. “I know how much trouble I’ve caused you with my romantic confessions and I really do apologize for that. I know you have a vested interest in me liking someone else, but you really did help me sort out my feelings today. You’re the best, LB.”
With an exaggerated flourish, he got up and sank into a bow, giving Ladybug one last flirtatious wink before extending his baton. “Catch you later, bug!”
Ladybug watched as he left, finally lifting the dam on her emotions, as a few tears silently slid down her cheeks. With a rueful smile, she whispered to herself. “I’m in so much trouble.”
troubled bonds and broken trust ~ pt. 1 (Pokemon DP)
Set generally in Sinnoh. I haven't rewatched in a while, so take timeline and continuity mistakes as you will. Basically a Paul redemption story with a bit of Ash/Paul and Dawn/Ash sprinkled in. Enjoy a bit of angst with a (eventual) happy ending!
(2072 words)
---
Dawn was the one who noticed first. It was late evening, and they were trying to find a good place to camp out for the night. Dawn had been looking out for a spot, when she noticed a bright spot amongst the foliage. Stepping closer, the figure came more into view, and Dawn stifled a gasp. Moving quickly, she called for the boys.
“Hey, Ash! Brock!” her frantic voice caught their attention immediately. In a flash, they were by her side, all of them now circling the slumped, battered, and starving figure of Electabuzz. And, to the fury of the trio, one very familiar Electabuzz.
Dawn watched with a pained expression, as Ash’s fists curled into tight fists, and he trembled with an unnameable emotion. She laid a hand on his shoulder, squeezing slightly. Relaxing a touch, he turned to her, whispering, “He can’t keep doing this. He- We have to do something. Anything.”
“You’re right,” Dawn said softly, her thumb stroking his shoulder soothingly. Then, after a deep breath, more confidently, “And we will. Brock will take good care of Electabuzz. Now, let’s go find Paul, and put a stop to… all of this.”
“You can count on me!” Brock assured, already unpacking his supplies. “I’ll make sure Electabuzz here is healed up and taken care of. I won’t let him out of my sight; you guys go find that bastard.”
Ash took a deep breath, and reached up to squeeze Dawn’s hand. His lips twisted in a grim smile, as he stated, “I suppose there’s only one thing to do."
===
This time, Ash was the first to notice. His eyes zeroed in on a silhouette in the rapidly dimming light. It seemed to be moving, swaying unsteadily. He squinted, looking closer, and sucked in a sharp breath. Dawn snapped her head in his direction, following his gaze, and slapped a hand to her mouth when she saw it.
Coming slowly into view, was the incredibly emaciated figure of the boy they were looking for. Neither Ash nor Dawn moved. The longer they looked, the more details they noticed. His eyes were dark and sunken, black holes in his deathly pale face. His top was bare, exposing his skin, seemingly draped directly over his bones. A ragged pair of jeans was his only shelter from the elements, accounting for the bruises and rash scars littering his body.
“Wh- you…” Ash struggled for words. Paul looked almost as bad as Electavuzz, and that snapped something into place for Ash. If he'd been wearing a shirt, Ash would have grabbed it; as it stood, he grabbed Paul’s shoulders in a death grip, and hissed in his face. “What the fuck do you think you're doing?”
“Piss off,” Paul's retort seemed to die in his throat, only a strained whisper escaping. Trying in vain to escape Ash’s hold, he spat, “none of your business.”
Dawn observed silently. Seeing Ash fired up was nothing new, but she shuddered internally as she watched the usually cherry boy exude such venomous rage. Something about Paul seemed to strip him down to his most raw and unstable. Paul wasn't much better; in fact his evidently unraveling sanity seemed to only fray faster in Ash’s presence.
“Ash,” she said softly, gently squeezing his shoulder. She nearly flinched as he turned his deep scowl on her. Collecting herself, she advised, “let's get him… not about to die, and then figure out what's going on. Alright?”
Ash stilled for a moment, and appraised Paul's form. His scowl didn't leave, but his posture relaxed slightly. Dawn turned her attention to the increasingly apparent wounds and scars accumulating on the boy's exposed body. With a shift of his weight, Ash threw Paul’s arm over his shoulder, Dawn already moving to take his other side. The duo dragged Paul’s struggling form all the way back to their campsite.
“Hey Brock,” Dawn called, prompting their cook to look up from his instruments. He appraised the scene quickly, a grim look appearing on his face.
“The tent is set up, go lay him in there,” Brock immediately began giving instructions. “Ash, you go grab the medical supplies, and Dawn, could you help me make some food and medicine here?”
“Aye, sir,” Dawn and Ash moved quickly to the tent, laying Paul on the sleeping bag already set out. While Dawn left to help Brock with the medicine and food, Ash grabbed the first aid kit, and began cleaning Paul’s most recent wounds. He was no longer struggling, but if looks could kill, he'd have assassinated the group by now.
“What. the fuck. do you think you're doing?” Ash gritted out, as he cleaned a shallow gash in Paul’s side.
“None of your business.”
“It is, actually. I don't give a shit about your sorry ass, but you've been torturing your pokemon and that is unforgivable. Again: what the fuck happened to Electabuzz, and why the fuck are you in this state too?” Ash’s eyes bore holes into Paul’s fraying consciousness.
“I… Electabuzz refused to obey me. So, I- I disciplined him-”
“You what?!”
“-like always. Electabuzz knows what's good for him, this is how we train. This time, he still didn't obey me.”
Ash sucked in a sharp breath. He had so much he wanted to say, but one thing stuck in his mind. Why was Paul in this state too? That still didn't make sense.
“He rejected our ethos. That was supposed to be our constant,” Paul wasn't even looking at Ash anymore. His voice was thick, and his eyes were glistening. “We understood each other. Discipline and pain make us stronger. Do you know how I caught him, as an Elekid?”
Now, he looked directly into Ash’s eyes and Ash saw something desperate there. He recognized the hunger laced in with desperation and despair.
“He was training on his own, because none of the other Elekid wanted to spar with him. They were too soft for him,” Paul recanted. Ash couldn't help but listen, while his hands idly cleaned and bandaged more of Paul’s wounds.
“He was depriving himself of food for a week when I found him. I wanted to catch him, but he refused. I followed him around, you know. He was—” his voice cracked, “—is such a hard worker. He never ate a bite until he got the technique he was training for.”
Ash listened, a sense of horror slowly dawning on him. He recalled his battles with Paul, how Elekid looked at Chimchar, the pokemon he'd replaced. The intensity of his gaze; the barely contained desperation and self-loathing. He saw it so clearly now, mirrored in the boy whose bruised body he was now tracing with a disinfectant-soaked cotton pad.
“So, you punished yourself,” Ash cut in suddenly. It wasn't a question; no, his eyes were focused, now filled with a sorrowful pity, replacing the burning rage from before. He counted the scraped, gashes, and rash scars, imagining exactly how Paul might have forced them on himself.
“Wha-” Paul stuttered, mid-monologue. “What're you on abo-”
“Electabuzz lost faith in you. He rejected you,” Ash said pointedly. Paul flinched. “You didn't make him like that. You were both like that from the start. No matter what others said, you could brush it off because you both got it. You got him and he got you.”
The glistening sheen of Paul’s eyes broke, tears spilling silently. He didn't have the energy to retort.
“Yet, he still walked away. Because of course he did,” Ash didn't mind rubbing it just a little bit. “But this time, you couldn't brush it off. This time it was your fault. You have no one to blame but yourself.”
Paul no longer restrained his tears, as he silently sobbed under Ash’s scrutinizing gaze.
“I tried, you know…” eventually, a tortured whisper escaped his lips. Ash’s eyes locked on Paul’s. “I went back. I told him to come back, and we—” Paul shuddered as a fresh sob wracked his frame, “—we could figure it out. To- together,” he barely managed to get out before collapsing into more wretched sobs.
“Then why?’ Ash asked, though he was mostly sure of the answer. “Why didn't you stop it? Why isn't he back with you? Why did we find him battered and starving in the woods?” Ash tried to keep the anger down, but he couldn't help the rising tone as he got more worked up.
“He… he didn't want to. He—” Paul took several deep breaths before continuing, still barely a whisper. “He told me to release him.
Ash looked on sadly. Sure, he was angry, but the weight of that last sentence shook him to his core, for entirely different reasons. Loathe as he was to admit it, he understood exactly the anguish Paul was feeling right now. Just the thought of any of his Pokemon saying that to him felt like a dagger straight to his heart. He looked at Pikachu, who was wearing an equally anguished look, no doubt thinking of Electabuzz.
“So… you didn't release him?” Ash prompted, in a whisper of his own.
“N-no,” Paul admitted. “I just… I couldn't bring myself to. I hate it. I hate myself, I'm a worthless waste of space. I know I need to let him go, but…” another deep breath. “I don't deserve to exist.”
Ash watched as Paul once again collapsed into a fit of ugly sobs. A pit settled in his stomach as he processed Paul's last admission. As the knot in his gut tightened, he glanced, again, over the body whose worst wounds were now cleaned and bandaged. He noted the layers of scars, light and dark, deep and shallow. The splotches of skin he was sure must have been married by rash upon rash. He began to wonder just how long Paul had been out there.
Just then, Dawn popped her head in, and gently called for Ash.
“Huh? Oh, hey Dawn, is dinner ready?” Ash looked up at her, trying to sound casual. Not that it worked, unsurprisingly.
“Oh, Ash,” she said softly, moving to sit by him, following his gaze as it returned to Paul. “How bad is it?”
Ash took a deep breath before answering. “Pretty fucking bad.”
“Wanna… talk about it?”
“Um, I…” Ash turned to catch her intent gaze focused on him, and moved to grasp her hand by his knee. “Yeah, that would be great actually, thank you.”
“Of course. No need to worry,” she squeezed his hand, and he chuckled.
“He…” Ash stumbled for a place to start. “He's kinda fucked up, mentally.”
“Mhm…” Dawn listened without comment, looking to see where this goes.
“Like, I mean actually, like clinically fucked up, man,” Ash turned to her, surprising her with an expression more sad than angry. “He's fucking suicidal. His warped idea of training… the way he treats his pokemon… he's torturing himself too. He's hurting himself on purpose.”
Dawn gasped softly, giving Ash’s hand another squeeze as he continued, voice thick with several emotions.
“Electabuzz was like that too, y'know?” He looked at her, and she saw the anguish reflected in his eyes. “He… he explained it to me. How they met. They were the best fit in the worst possible way. They enabled each other.”
“That… actually makes a lot of sense,” Dawn commented solemnly, processing what she was hearing.
“He's hurting himself, Dawn,” Ash whispered. “He hurt Electabuzz, and this time was the last straw. He… he's not safe by himself.”
Dawn looked over at Paul’s still figure. She noted his silence, and realized he had already fallen asleep. Turning back to Ash, she pulled him up.
“Okay,” she said, firmly. “We don't leave either of them out of our sight. He obviously needs help. And we can't let him be alone with Electabuzz until something changes.’
Ash nodded.
“So, we feed them. Heal them. Until Paul isn't a danger to himself or Electabuzz. Can you do that?”
Her voice was gentle, but Ash recognized the stern reprimand behind it. He knew how Paul affected him. How they affected each other, frankly. After a moment of thought, he nodded.
“Alright then, shall we get ready for dinner? I know the team wins going to love the spread tonight. Brock really went all out.” She turned to Paul. “And let's get some healthy food into him before he disappears into thin air.”

A/N: just some angsty Paul redemption. DP is what I grew up on and was such an amazing run. And, while Paul was one of my favorite parts of it, they really dropped the ball on his redemption. I've always had this idea of a mentally warped and tortured Paul, with Elekid "matching his freak" in a way Chimchar never could. Hopefully a part 2 soon.
~pokemon DP blurb~
“Thanks for the offer, really. I would stay, but I feel I need to spend some time finding who I am on my own, before relying on you again,” Paul addressed the group, but his eyes were fixed on Ash’s. “Besides, it seems I would have more than one kind of rivalry if I stayed here,” Dawn wondered if anyone else noticed the brief but meaningful look Paul directed her way. She raised her brows in question, but he was already looking back at Ash, giving his hand a firm shake before walking away.
Dawn’s gaze wandered to Ash, where her eyes caught on his; more specifically, the intensity in them as they locked on Paul’s retreating frame. It only took a moment to notice the slight tug of jealousy in her gut. The realization struck her like a lightning bolt, sending a tingly feeling up her spine, and her eyelids flying wide. Her head whipped back towards Paul, who was now looking back, his face just clear enough for Dawn to make out the smirk directed squarely at her. She could’ve sworn she saw him mouth, Good luck.

(Idk if I want this to become a polycule or just unrequited Ash/Paul. Regardless, these idiots have been on my mind, and I had to get this scene down on paper. Set after Paul's redemption, and pre-Ash/Dawn. Now I just have to write the rest of the fic :p)
Can you please, pretty-please do a "3 linguistics papers to read" about neopronouns? I'd love to get some academic perspectives on them! :)

Miltersen, E. H. (2016). Nounself pronouns: 3rd person personal pronouns as identity expression. Journal of Language Works-Sprogvidenskabeligt Studentertidsskrift, 1(1), 37-62. Open access to the paper here
Next, a very short paper by Rose et al., 2023, which is just looking at whether people even find neopronouns acceptable / grammatical:
Rose, E., Winig, M., Nash, J., Roepke, K., & Conrod, K. (2023). Variation in acceptability of neologistic English pronouns. Proceedings of the Linguistic Society of America, 8(1), 5526-5526. Open access paper is here
And then finally, I'd recommend this super cool paper by Laura Hekanaho, 2022, looking at the metalinguistic commentary and ways people talk about neopronouns - overlaps a bit with Rose et al.'s paper, but goes into much greater depth:
Hekanaho, L. (2022). A thematic analysis of attitudes towards English nonbinary pronouns. Journal of language and sexuality, 11(2), 190-216. Author's copy of the paper here
One thing about neopronouns is that there's comparatively little linguistics research published about them, and what does exist is very focused on English. Part of this is because the ways neopronouns are cropping up in English speech communities (especially online) are different than in other language communities, and the other part of the reason is that they're just super rare -- best estimates of how many people use neopronouns are very very low (the US Trans Census and the Gender Census report numbers <10%, and that's out of only trans people), and their appearance in every day language appears to be very rare.
What this means (frustratingly! and I hope this is changing!) is that at best neopronouns are mentioned in footnotes of linguistics articles and books about other stuff. There's also Dennis Baron's 2020 book, What's Your Pronoun, which is a really thorough documentation of historical attempts to coin gender-neutral pronouns in English... but Baron kind of comes to the conclusion that singular 'they' has 'won' the competition, and that none of the neopronouns he tracks have become mainstream.
Anyways, my personal opinion as a linguist is that I get frustrated with linguists who dismiss neopronouns because they're rare. Just because something's rare doesn't mean it's not a part of the language, and therefore a real part of the phenomenon we've decided to study! Devil's hole pupfish of english, tbh.
(Previous "3 papers to read" post was "3 papers to read about singular 'they'." If you like these posts, you can request a topic in linguistics and I'll do my best to recommend 3 open-access published papers to read!)

Ghost of Warmth ~
Little fluff & angst blurb 🔅
~~
When you still wake up thinking about her. You stir lightly, shifting under the warm covers. She's swimming around in your mind as your awake from an unconscious slumber.
It's odd, she's not exactly welcome, not exactly unwelcome. She's just there. Her presence filling your chest and working it's through your extremities. You can feel her warm smiling filling your own body with embers of warmth. You want to enjoy this moment forever. Enjoy her in her fullest in this wonderful moment, as the sun shines lightly through the curtains and warms your face.
And your eyes slowly flutter open. And you realize she's not here. She never really was. All she is is a warm feeling in the morning, enveloping you and keeping you safe. But never actually there. She's nothing but a ghost keeping you warm in these early mornings.
