here we go again

So I've seen people shipping Grace with Tony Stark and I think that's GREAT. But I think that we could take this to a whole other level. We all know that Tony had a whole playboy thing going on pre Iron Man 1. We also know that Grace was a petty bastard (I say with love) before he was a teacher.

Now here's what I think we could do different. I want someone to write a fic where Tony did something to fumble the relationship. Like hardcore mess it up. And Grace basically tried to have a "I'm just going to break up with him and leave it at that."

And of course, since we're in the state BEFORE Tony learns how to be an actual decent person, he goes and says a bunch of shit about Grace. On social media, on the news, I don't really care which.

Then given that Grace is not one to take things laying down ie. "staggering waste of carbon", Grace sues him for defamation and he wins. *Cough cough* He goes to Nelson, Murdock *cough* This can be how he possibly pays off his student loans or whatever, I don't really care what he does with the money.

And this all goes down before it really clicks that he's on the Ace spectrum. So breaking up with the man could be a combination of dodging a bullet and winning a million dollars

Maybe a few years later cuts to him, a human Adrian and Rocky, the lawyer trio, and (if you fall into the brother propoganda) Jody and Colt. And they're a little tipsy and playing kiss mary kill. it gets to the point where Tony is brought up and like half of the table get a little antsy because they were in the crossfire for that shit. And Grace lets out the loudest sigh of his life before he has to explain.

And if you are perchance a bloodymary or starstruck believer you can get the lines "oh shit my ex is comming" "you dated TONY STARK" "and I sued his ass" and/or "If you hurt my brother-" "they'll never find a body. I know" "no, I was going to say that we'll probably be seeing you in court."

Also the idea of Court existing in that possible universe and coming out of hiding to put the fear of god into Iron Man is so funny. ( he and Bucky have fought a few times as wintersoldier and Sierra agent but the only thing they agree on is a mild dislike of Tony Stark)

omg the idea of Tony maybe wanting to win Ryland back but Tom Ryder or Simon are already mid way through trying to win him over.

Maybe Tom is like his most recent ex but it wasn't nearly as horrible of a break up. They just both realized they wanted different things in life and were better as friends. Colt is furious that they are still decent friends.

It would be cool if Ryland worked as like a consultant for the government during the summer. It gets him scary friends like Carl and Eva. Both of whom promise to keep Court out of jail if he needed to kill Tony because he blinked kinda funny at Ry and he had no other choice guys really.

I think Tom would hateeee Tony, even if he wasn't calmed down or nice in this AU. Tony would 100% draw attention away from Tom and he would hate that. So he'd really enjoy hearing about Colt's brother suing Stark and might offer to pay for some of the legal fees so Ryland can really drag Stark down.

I feel like despite him getting kicked out of academia, 90% of the scientific community would stand with Ryland over Tony during the break up. Like they all make a bunch of posts saying stuff like:

"Dr. Grace may be fucking crazy when it comes to science, but everything Dr. Stark has said about him is straight bull shit." But like more professional.

If we wanted shit to get real dramatic, Ryland could some how end up teaching at Peter's school. He mentions his favorite teacher, Dr. Grace, while eating lunch with the avengers, and Tony just starts having war flashbacks.

OOOOOHHHHHH LOVE the additions to this

Colt would absolutely still dislike Ryder, but compared to Tony in this he's a step up even if not by much. If they were to break up, Ryder spends the first few months terrified that Grace will run him into the ground. Only, he doesn't because the relationship ended on good terms (I would assume if they were on good terms). If they were still friends I can imagine him looking at Simon and going 'good fuckin luck buddy' at the man who was enamored with a teacher who's lowkey a little bit crazy.

I love how you included Carl and Eva. In a kinder world (this one) they would get the chance to be such good friends, to the point where I'm almost convinced, they would do it themselves. I think it would be funny if the events of the gray man happened but Eva get's to be her powerhouse self and go 'you're going to stop chasing him' and the cia just HAS TOO. And she had no reason for it other than That's my friend's brother right there. And her being like 'Cout. Court, have you considered-' and he's already making plans. Also, this, but she rocks Hydra's shit and gets her hands on the Winter Soldier. She finds him the best possible therapist. He works for her willingly and she will go after anyone who challenges this.

I think that Ryder would use his fanbase to drag Tony down as well. I feel like all he'd really have to do is make one post and people would go haywire. Depending on whether Ryder was less... Ryder than in cannon, I think he would keep the relationship secret as per Grace's request so what get's his fans going is absolutely random. (Adrian and Rocky would not allow him to go against Graces wishes. Rocky would just want to talk to him, he swears.)

Tom would absolutely pay for his legal fee's. I feel like if they did go too Daredevils law firm, Matt would try to do the case pro-bono because he just doesn't like Stark (I fear 'merchant of death' since we are pre Iron Man 1 would not appeal to a man that catholicly guilty.) Ryder would go "no no, I'm paying you too do a good job."

Science community would absolutely side with Grace over Tony. They all think he's a crazy bitch, but scientists go after each other for their work all of the time. This, however, is personal in a way that should not have been public. So they start going after Tony for his company being primarily focused on weaponry. Because again, they might not like similar ideas, but people who are some of the best in their fields would not like the effects those weapons had

if it's a few years later and he does end up teaching Peter, I'd assume Tony's gone through it by know. He regrets what he did, but also the moment Grace get's brought up, he has an absolute REACTION. Like the other avengers are so confused on why he freaked out when he heard the name of Peters science teacher

I love that this basically just boils down to Tony getting attacked on all fronts. I love the au add ons thank you <3

I love the implications that Tom Ryder fans have kinda just accepted he's bat shit insane and have become insane through osmosis. He basically just points at something, says fetch, and the fans go after whatever it is like rabid dogs.

It'd be really funny if Rocky ran an engineering company. They're considered rivals with Stark Industries because they both work with the government but not really since they're in completely different markets. Rocky focusing more on building things that will help human life like weather machines or housing in areas with natural disasters.

Maybe Adrian works as Rocky's lawyer instead? Stark industries tried to sue Erid(Rocky's company) over some technology they made public and Adrian ripped them to shreds.

You know that guy who made the blackest paint and stopped everyone from using it and in response someone made the pinkest paint and said everyone but him can use it? Rocky doing that with Xenonite and Stark Industries.

I want to think Tom would wingman for Simon, he like "You want Ryland? I mean he's great but he's also kinda terrifying are you sure? Okay man its your funeral."

I think the break up would be largely forgotten over time. Like it's remembered that Tony Stark went through a really messy break up with someone, but it's really remembered who. I'm basing this off the fact that I know several billionaires who have gone through messy divorces but I can't remember the names of who they broke up with for the life of me. So we can still have people get the shock value of "YOU DATED AND SUED IRON MAN???"

I think Stratt would run basically anti-shield, a group that uses lots of science to find non-violent and maybe a little bit crazy solutions to the worlds problems.

OH OH Maybe okay so:

The astrophage crisis is still happening, and they are trying to figure out how to get to Tau Ceti. Someone jokingly suggests just asking if Thor can use his magic rainbow bridge to get them there. It's laughed off until Stratt is suddenly standing up and talking into her phone trying to get a meeting with Nick Fury.

Because it's no longer considered a suicide mission, Grace is volunteered to go. A few days before launch, the astronauts, Stratt and some of the avengers meet to discuss how the mission will work.

Tony and Ryland having their awkward meeting and have to explain their horrible break up. This is how Eva and Carl learn that Grace and Stark used to date.

Everything goes well, the mission take roughly 4 months to complete and the astronauts are brought home.

Ryland Grace is now famous and the internet is finding every single piece of his digital foot print. So all of the old drama with Tony is getting brought back into the light and Tony has to re-live all of his embarrassing drunk tweets and interviews.

Simon gets to have a religious moment seeing all the previously hidden away videos of Ryland be a badass in court.

The concept of Eva having an anti-shield organization! I think another difference between the two of them would be that she makes everything about it public. Because she would understand that if they wanted to truly be different, they couldn't be a big brother organization.

I feel her contact with in Sheild that could get her to Nick Fury would be Ava because I can admit that I love Trolley Operators. Also Yao, Illyukhina, Shapiro, and Dubois live because yes. (the reason is because there was better managing in the labs and there was no failure in the coma system.) Grace is still the lead scientist but the other two are mainly just there to help make discoveries before he's off. I really want the shenanigans that would come with this, but most important l think their reactions to Grace's relationships would be funny.

I really like the idea of Court still managing to acquire Claire in some way. So given that she definently had a lot of free time prior to that, all I can imagine is she was well versed in tracking celebrities' lives. She and court get kind of brought into the family and she goes "when where you going to tell me that your brother dated a CEO and a movie star?" "He WHAT"

Simon absolutely learned some things about himself when he saw Grace go scorched earth.

I like to think that if the hail Mary team meets the whole avengers team, Grace, Rocky and Bruce Banner do big science together.

Can we call Eva's anti-sheild "Sprout"? Because the biggest thing is solving certain world problems with science and I think that the biggest things she would focus on would be world hunger and climate change. Plus I feel like it sounds a lot more open then other organizations

I think that if Thanos happened, Ava would get snapped, and my girl Eva would chug three coffee's and knock the man out herself. That being said, I have no idea what events in the mcu would be cannon. Like I feel she'd stop a lot of it but I'm not sure what would go through

I don't particularly know how I want to do all of Simon's backstory, But I do know Ava found the sad wet cat first then asked Eva to pull some strings to get out of trouble. Don't ask me why, they just did.

I'm really enjoying all the Grace and child Simon content, but every kid there needs to be saved, and Grace should get to have a full classroom of kids.

I don't mean like one or two other kids, I mean like Grace is walking on the beach on day and sudden there are like 25 kids in front of him. And this scrawny black hair kid is clearly the leader based on how they hide behind him.

Maybe throw in a few baby COI people as well.

Ryland Grace who is staying with Colt for summer break while he works on a non-Tom Ryder movie. The movie is the Barbie Movie, and Ryland some how ends up being the actor for Ken.

theres a lot of tense changes in this because im not writing it as a cohesive story, also its like long as shit and is just mindless rambling, it will have so many different plot holes and ideas im sorry

So it's the first few days of filming, so Colt just wanted to check in and see what he would be needed for in the following months before going to get lunch with his twin.

Unfortunately the actor for Ken(we will call them Ron) is behaving horribly on set, he's making Tom Ryder look like an angel. Ron is constantly getting into fights, refusing to do certain lines and treating everyone like shit. After two hours of just constant screaming matches, Ron yells that they can't film without him anyway and just leaves.

The director(i dub thee Lena) is almost in tears from how frustrated she is. Nothing is going to plan, they are already behind on filming and she doesn't know how she will deal with this for multiple months.

She goes to apologize to Colt when she see's Ryland. Lena is instantly struck by a vision, this man is exactly the vibe she wants for her movie. Ron wasn't the actor Lena wanted to play Ken, but no one else suited her expectations. Now Ryland is meeting nearly all of them without even trying.

Lena begs Ryland to be her Ken. Ryland who's only experience with acting is helping run the drama club at his school. Colt is instantly on board, he gets to hang out with his brother all day and do stunts for an actor who will actually appreciate him? Sign him up.

After several minutes of begging and pleading from Lena and Colt, Ryland agrees to do a few shots. If only to prove he can't act and this is a horrible idea.

He does perfectly. Everyone from the world famous costars to interns running around for coffee all agree that Dr. Ryland Grace is the perfect Ken.

So they begin filming. With Ryland being on a tight schedule and needing to get back to his teaching job within a few months, they try and squeeze all of his scenes into the first months of filming.

It is a mad dash but they just barely manage it, Colt being able to fill in for any small bits and pieces they missed.

Ryland forgets about it, he knows the movie will do well because his co-stars were amazing and the people working on it were also incredible, but he doesn't see much developing for him.

One day, Towards the end of the school year, a few of his students come up to him. "Mr. Grace is this you?" and its the trailer for The Barbie Movie, already at 25 million views.

Ryland calls Colt when he gets home, panicking, asking for help with just anything. He is very worried that people may try to stalk him or end up hurting one of his students. Colt is instantly on it, calming his brother down and reassuring him that he has a plan.

Colt helps Ryland find a manager and works to get some extra security for the school until all the fame dies down(it wont). Lena is very helpful as they had a bunch of funding left in the budget that was originally set aside to pay Ron.

Ryland is introduced to this new up and coming manager named Eva Stratt. The first thing she does is kick Colt out of her office and ask Ryland is he ever wants to act again. He shamefully admits that he wouldn't mind acting or working on projects that are focused on education.

Eva Stratt is just as efficient and brutal in this universe as any other. A few days after their first meeting she presents Ryland with several plans that will slowly push him away from teaching and into acting with projects based around education(Imagine like Kratt Brothers cartoon show but not cartoons).

Ryland is over joyed, getting to help teach not just kids in a classroom but kids all over the world is a dream. He does one more year of teaching before tearfully saying goodbye to all of his students and co-workers.

After his big role in the Barbie Movie, and all the promo stuff he did the summer it came out, he is able to land jobs with these smaller educational shows very easily.

Ryland is getting more and more famous, both because Eva is amazing at her job and Ryland is just naturally a dream come true for any PR team. They eventually have to hire a bodyguard, his name is Carl, he is Rylands best friend, don't you ever separate them.

Ryland asks Eva if he could possibly work on some sci-fi films, always being a bit of a fan of the genre. Eva, has he mentioned how amazing she is yet, presents Ryland with a plan within two hours of the meeting.

She and Ryland both agree Colt would be the best stunt double for Ryland, but he has another 2 years on his contract with Tom. So she proposes they wait out those two years, only taking smaller roles in movies.

Colt is working on another Ryder movie and in between stunts when he receives the proposal, of course he agrees. He gets to spend pretty much every day with his brother and leave Ryder? Yes please.

Side note: Colt and Ryland are so clingy because they got separated by social services when they were young and only found each other like 5 years ago. Court is still alive but in prison, he was able to help put them in contact with each other.

Everyone on set notices Colt's mood change, he is no longer growling every time Ryder talks, he's actually smiling and laughing with the man. His good move doesn't even fade throughout the months of filming, he actually seems to get happier. It is extremely creepy, Gail thinks he might be possessed.

Its during the last week of filming that some of the crew is finally able to able to learn and spread knowledge of why Colt is so happy. Tom is both stressed and angry, despite how much shit he gives him, Colt is one of his best stunt men. He mobilizes Gail to try and contact whoever this Ryland Grace is and get him to back off.

Eva Stratt is what's waiting for her. Gail may have connections, but Eva Stratt is scarier and more efficient. The only way for Ryder to keep Colt would be for Colt to personally decide to stay with Ryder and sign a new contract.

I think that in the first meeting between Grace and Simon, Grace should be allowed to bite and fight dirty.

I know that Simon would win a fight against Grace, they are made different and all that. However, it seems that when they meet Simon always goes ready to kill (which is justificable given his past), and Grace just there been like "Hello I'm Ryland Grace..." and PUM! Simon is over him ready to suffocate him and Grace is like fighting to breath, but never hurting Simon, just struggling against him, and the fight ends usually by: 1) Simon is able to heard reasons and gives Grace a chance but is very suspicious of him, 2) he just passes out, because pain and exhaustation would do that to your body, or 3) (and the funniest one to me) Rocky appears (like the saviour he is) and knocks Simon out.

I would want to introduce the idea of Grace fighting back.

Grace may seem like a stable person at first in comparison to his companions; an alien who had live in solitude so long that has separation issues, and Simon who is his whole case of study with mentions of cults, facing god and been a child soldier. However, Grace is an anxiety bomb, who has a bad history with people, I think that if Simon just jumps over him, Grace would fight like a mad man.

It doesn't matter which Grace you know or like the most (personally my mind have just make an amalgam of the book and the movie) he would have the motivation to fight; Book!Grace, who was drug in the spot and sent to a cell to wait to be sent to die would fight now that he can, because he knows what kind of stuff happens if he doesn't react fast enough; Movie!Grace is a person who panics, but after a moment of shock he reacts as we saw in the movie doing his best attempt to dodge guards and ran as fast as he could. Besides, Grace wants to live, that is the origin of his determination to get through things, so if he thinks that Simon is going to kill him he would fight.

Of course, he can't win, and he knows he can't win, but he would try, bitting and scratching, kicking and squirming. Let him play dirty; If Simon's amputation is fresh, let Grace prick the exposed nerve; if Simon has raw, sensible skin from the mutation, let Grace scratch there; If Simon is close enough, let Grace poke his eyes.

He can ask for forgiveness later, when he is back to be Grace, right now he is just a scare man who wants to survive.

I must add, that if Grace is ripped (and fights dirty, of course) when he meets Simon -like in the start of the mission and not when he was getting starved in his way to Erid-, and Simon is freshly woke up when he jumps over Grace ready to kill him, I think that Grace has a chance, a chance, to win that fight.

Other things I have thought about Grace fighting dirty:

When he notice he is losing the fight, he has to fight the wish to cry, because he can't let himsefl have a blurry sight in the middle of a fight.

Grace been known as a violent scientists among the academic community. I'm pretty sure he punched at least one face in his way out after he was humillated for beliving in waterless forms of lives.

Grace using his size for his advantage.

Grace kicking in the groin with all he has.

Grace using all those little fun facts he have to his kids in class about the human body to know where his punches would make more harm, or provoke more pain.

Grace using his knowledge about the Hail Mary or his biodome to throw objects or avoid punches.

Grace pulling the hair of Simon.

Grace going particular violent over Simon, if Simon kicks or tries to harm Rocky's ball.

Also a silly scene that poped in my mind while writing this was:

Simon, still covered in blood, just recovering a bit of his councience and standing from the table like a mummy or dracula would do once they wake up, taking by surprise at Grace, who slaps/swings at him in a reflex, knocking Simon out.

Rocky who presenced everything doesn't know if to laugh, congratulate Grace or calming him down.

I just came up with a really fun idea about Rocky discovering geodes. Like what if on Erid, crystals forming inside of someone is their variant of cancer or a severe sickness.

So basically, really dangerous and probably painful to have sharp crystalline things like that slowly pierce the fleshy soft insides of an Eridian.

Rocky, looking at pictures of geodes on the portable think machine: Grace.

Grace, tinkering with something: Yeah bud?

Rocky; Why earth rocks sick, question?

Grace, stopping: what? Earth rocks aren’t sick.

Rocky: Yes yes yes. Look! Sick rocks. Like Eridian.

And so Grace has to explain the probably horrifying concept of “no those are geodes, that’s natural on earth.” Rocky is horrified, statement.

Probably wouldn't be cancer since their version of that probably isn't too different from ours (their actual organic cells are fairly similar to earth life; they just have way fewer of them so cancer is a lot less likely… and likely the main reason for their long lifespans).

But there could be other cellular defects that cause crystals to grow on the inside. Especially because eridians do have one place inside that crystals are supposed to be: their brains. Which means their cells can build and maintain crystal structures, so if they start doing that where they're not supposed to, it could cause very bad and very weird problems.

ACTUALLY- CRYSTALIZING YOUR INSIDES IS A THING THAT HAPPENS!!! TO ISOPODS!!!

The Invertebrate iridescent virus 31 aka the isopod iridovirus is a virus that infects isopods and crystalizes their insides! It also makes them turn blue/purple!!!! It's 100% fatal and not much is known about the spread other than possibly if one isopod eats the corpse of an infected they become infected as well!!!!

So maybe their non-crystallized parts get crystallized nd their carapace changes to a sickly Eridian-colour like purple like that, but since Eridians can’t see colours they don’t know until it’s too late which could play a part in why it’s fatal 100% of the time like an isopod?

Oh my stars that would be both amusing to see, and Grace would YET AGAIN be responsible for saving another entire species in a different, smaller way.

Ir would be groundbreaking in the medical side of science and they’d probably try to figure out a way to see colours like that, or at least detect it easier, since it requires a biology Eridians don’t have by seeing the colours. In the meantime though they have Grace who can spot it and help.

Ryland Grace will have the biggest funeral of any human ever

He already was the reason for the 2nd largest Eridian Thrum

When he passes, two entire planets will celebrate his life. (Head cannon) Eridians view funerals a bit more light heartedly than humans. While the passing of a loved one still hurts, it also concludes an experience so sacred within the universe. They throw a rager in Graces honor. Rocky commissions a memorial & for WEEKS it’s surrounded with food, dancing, tributes & speeches reminiscing everyone’s experiences with one of the saviors of Earth & Erid, but most importantly their memories with their Friend Grace

Earth will get the memo in an Eridian probe years later. Someone, probably a younger friend of Stratt/a descendant of PHM will give the news. There won’t be quite the collective celebration, but everyone, everywhere, will pay tribute to him somehow. hey, op! i'm in love with this. i hope you don't mind but i felt compelled to write a short one-shot based on it.

'Proximity Alert! Proximity Alert!'

Mary's warning blared over the ship's sound system but was almost drowned out by the horrific screeching, screaming noise coming from the far corner of the lab where something was materialising.

'Yeah, we got it, Mary! We freakin' know!' Grace shouted, shrill and panicked.

Rocky cowered low; the sudden cacophony overwhelming his senses. Grace hunched in front of him - body covering as much of the xenonite ball as he could - as they both ducked behind a lab bench.

'Ohgodohgodohgod-' Grace muttered, his voice an octave higher than usual. 'C'mon, Rock. C'mon, buddy, I need you to shake outta this. We've gotta situation here.'

The loud scraping sound ended with a sonorous clang! and Mary's proximity alert shut off abruptly. For a few seconds there was silence, broken only by Grace's shallow, shaky breaths and Rocky's pained trills.

Grace peeked over the top of the bench. He caught a glimpse of a large, blue box before a door on it opened and he ducked back down again.

'You recognise any of this, Rocky? Tell me this is something Eridian, please,' he whispered.

[Not Eridian. Not Earth?]

'Yeah. No. Definitely not Earth.'

'Hello?' A third voice rang out across the room and both of them froze. The voice was chipper, male and… English? 'Love the sneaky-sneaky thing you've got going on but I'm afraid–' he drew out the last word. 'I can see your hair.'

'Shoot,' Grace breathed. 'I'll distract it. Him. Whatever. And you just. You get back to the Blip-A, okay?'

Rocky shook his carapace fervently.

[Bad bad bad. No–]

But Grace was already moving; he took a deep breath and raised himself above the lab bench.

'There you are! 'Ello!' The man hailed cheerily.

It - he - was another human; tall and gangling, in a pinstriped suit and trench coat, with artfully-tousled hair. He waved at Grace. Grace - against his better judgement - waved back.

'Lovely place you've got here,' the man grinned at him. 'Love all the… string. Very stringy,' he gestured expansively at the bungee cords. 'Ooh, science! I love a laboratory. Mind if I just–'

He took one step towards a microscope, jerked to a stop and frowned at the ground as if it had offended him.

'That's weird.'

He bounced on the balls of his feet.

'That's really weird.'

He pulled a flat wallet out of an inside pocket and let it go; watching as it dropped to the ground.

'We're in a centrifuge,' he stated. 'This lab is one big centrifuge,' he turned his attention fully on Grace. 'Why is this lab a centrifuge?'

Grace unstuck his throat. He felt Rocky's xenonite ball nudge up against his leg.

'W- we're. Um. I-it's because this isn't a lab. Not really. It's a spaceship.'

'A spaceship?' the man frowned. 'Why would a spaceship be a centrifu–' he cut himself off suddenly.

He stared at Grace, hard, as if seeing him properly for the first time. Then his eyes widened and a huge grin split his features.

'Is this…? Oh, please! Red jumpsuit!' he pointed at Grace's legs.

'Xenonite tubing!' he pointed at that too. Then, he rushed over to the nearest microscope and - to Grace's horror - dipped a finger into the black goop on the slide and tasted it.

'Taumoeba!' he exclaimed in delight.

'This is the Hail Mary. I'm on the Hail Mary!'

He let out a whoop of joy and bounced across the room until he was leaning bodily across the bench separating him and Grace.

'And you. Hah! You must Dr Ryland Grace!'

'Er. Y-yeah. I's him. He'm me. I–' Grace shook himself. 'Yes. I'm Dr Ryland Grace a-and this is–'

'Rocky the Eridian!' he burst out and launched himself across the bench to peer down at Rocky. He let out a series of complicated whistles which Rocky copied.

[Is traditional Eridian greeting. How…?]

'You can speak Eridian?'

'Hm? Yep. Can speak everything, me. 'Cos I'm clever,' he said dismissively. 'I'm The Doctor, by the way, and you are Ryland Grace!'

The Doctor beamed, like meeting Grace had made his entire week. It was a bit overwhelming. Grace stumbled back a couple of steps and placed a hand on Rocky's ball.

'H-how did you get here? Are you from Earth? No, technology can't have jumped forward that far. Wh-what…?'

'Oh, it's not important! Honestly, it's boring. That's my ship,' he jerked a thumb towards the wooden, blue box in the corner of the room. 'And I'm not actually human. Normally, that's a bit of a shock to people but you're used to extraterrestrials! You're the Ryland Grace. First Contact is your whole thing! That and saving– wait,' he cut himself off. 'Where are we? What have you done? You've done the whole Taumoeba whatsit. Where are you going?'

Grace blinked and fumbled a little.

'Erm…'

[Grace and Rocky go to Erid.]

'Oh, you're on the way home!' The Doctor practically squealed with happiness.

He finally rounded the lab bench and stood almost toe-to-toe with Grace.

'Dr Captain Ryland Grace. Saviour of two - two! - civilisations. Humanity's first interstellar astronaut, First Contact and first Terran immigrant,' The Doctor smiled at him with such pride that Grace felt himself tear up. 'You do so much. You are so important to so many. And you are so brave.'

A sob choked its way out of Grace at that.

[Agree agree agree! Grace save Earth! Save Erid!]

'Ah! He said the thing!' The Doctor cried gleefully. 'I'd always hoped I'd meet you two. What a pair! Two lonely astronauts - both their species' last hopes - working together to save the stars! You're lucky,' he addressed this to Rocky. 'I have a human best friend, too. They're just brilliant, aren't they?'

[Also grumpy, stupid, brave.]

'Hah! Yeah. Mine's all that too,' he said wistfully.

'Wait. Wait. What did you–' Grace started but another loud clang! sounded from The Doctor's… machine.

'Yeah, yeah!' he called behind him. 'That's my cue, I'm afraid.'

'You're going?'

'Well, I can't hang around here, all day, can I?' The Doctor said, already striding across the lab again. 'Can't get in the way of all of this. How long until you get to the 40 Eridani system?'

'Er…' Grace tapped on his laptop. 'two years, ten months and three days.'

'Not long to go now! Well…' he drew out the word. ' Relatively speaking, anyway. Stratt follows through, by the way. On the statue thing. There are hundreds of them. 'Grace Rocky Save Stars' under each one. The best one is outside your old school - it's the only one where they get your hair right and they have you and Rocky holding hands. Right! Must be off! Places to be!'

'How're you gonna–'

'Don't worry about that! The old girl takes care of it,' The Doctor patted the side of the box cheerfully. 'Dr Ryland Grace,' he said again. 'Amazing. Oh! One last thing! I've always wanted to do this.'

He took a step towards Rocky and pressed his hand, balled into a fist, against the xenonite partition.

'Fist my bump?' he asked and laughed excitedly when Rocky obliged him. 'Brilliant! OK, you two. Take care of each other. Don't forget to tell the Eridians about the importance of UV radiation - they forget to put it in the artificial Sun at first and you get a bit of the old Vitamin D deficiency. Not fun!'

The Doctor backed his way into the box. Grace caught sight of an interior that looked far bigger than it should be.

'Goodbye, Grace. Goodbye, Rocky. Good luck on Erid!'

And, with that, the door clicked shut. The horrible whirring, screeching noise filled the room again. A wild wind whipped up and caused Grace to shut his eyes against it. When he reopened them, the box was gone.

He and Rocky stood in silence for a moment.

'Hey, buddy?'

[Yes, Grace, question?]

'What the heck?'
