It's been a while since I posted on tumblr, but I thought better late than never, so here I greeted you all again in this new year.
As Yuzuka Ray is now an artist of Stardust Promotion and Minami Maito a soon-to-be Cosmos Troupe member, I'd like to share how I've been translating both of their interviews.

Q. How do you feel after the interview?
M. It's been a while since I had an interview at ć+actć so I really looked forward to this day. I was told the concept of today's photoshoot was "simple and mature", so I hope the photos could show another, different side of me to you. Through this photoshoot opportunity, I discovered a new me. I'm really glad that this photoshoot was able to showcase this side of me.
Q. What's your current routine, or something you're interested in?
M. I still like the things I did in the past, so when I heard the question "What am I interested in now", honestly nothing special comes to mind.
But I've always loved watching dramas, and I'm excited whenever each episode is out. I watch dramas on the rest days during rehearsals, and don't watch them during the performance period, but will get back to it almost in one sitting, after we finished our performances, which makes me really happy. I watch dramas of any genre, simply because it brings me pure enjoyment. Sometimes I take a step back and observe the actors' gestures and acting carefully... Somehow I answered this too seriously (LOL).
And, after all, I love moving my body the most. In those days when I couldn't dance [during pandemic], I felt unfamiliar and couldn't feel a peace of mind. If you see somone moving, dancing(?) strangely outside, that may just be me. (LOL).
The new Cosmos Troupe star Minami Maito has a smile like the sun, with a dominating, gorgeous stage presence and eye-catching strengths. In her Senka days, she performed outside Takarazuka Revue in other stage performances. Minami Maito has overcome each wave of challenges in the past two years, and we ask her how she feels now.
She started dancing ballet when she was 3. As the girl who loved dancing, her dream was to be a Takarasienne. When she was in elementary school, she wrote an essay about "wanting to become a Takarazuka performer.ā And Minami Maito had fulfilled her dream. She is honest and kind, radiating a sparkling stage presence. More than anything, she is hardworking, accumulating her efforts into experience and turning them into her strengths as she ascends to stardom. Upon participating in newcomers' performances, bow hall performances, Tokyo performances, and leading in many other performances which all captivated much attention, suddenly she was transferred to Senka. During her Senka days, she challenged performing outside of Takarazuka in other performances. "HiGH&LOW: THE SENGOKU" was a stage where she performed with male actors, and it created sensational discussions. Afterwards, it was announced that Minami Maito would be transferring to Cosmos Troupe on April 28, 2025. After gaining much experience in Senka for the past 2 years, we ask about her real thoughts on how she's feeling now and how she wants to prepare for Cosmos Troupe stage performances.

WANI. (hereafter W.) First of all, we want to hear about your experience in Senka. You were assigned to Flower Troupe upon entering Takarazuka Revue, so when your Senka transfer was announced, how did you feel?
Minami. (hereafter M.) If I were going to Senka, I knew that I would be seeing sights totally different than I had seen in my Flower Troupe days. From there, I became excited with my new self, the people, and the performances I'd be encountering. But when people think of Senka, they're [a troupe] full of specialist performers. Honestly, at first I thought "Can I be doing this?" I had taken on the challenge with much determination and courage, but the greatest emotion I felt was still apprehension. Compared to when I was in Flower Troupe, where it was always certain that I'd be taking part in the next performance, that's different in Senka. [Senka performers] don't know what's our next performance and when we'll be performing on stage. As I dealt with such nervousness, I knew it was crucial that I make use of what I've learned in my previous performance and connect it to the next. Even during my Flower Troupe days, I committed everything into every performance, and when I was in Senka, I felt that I had elevated my passion towards each performance into another level.
W. Then you began your Senka days in the Star Troupe Hakataza performance "ME AND MY GIRL". You played the shared lead roles along with Akatsuki Chisei.
M. My partner was the then-Star Troupe Top Musumeyaku Maisora Hitomi. I performed with her when she was still an underclassmen in Flower Troupe, but when I saw her performing with Co-chan [Rei Makoto], the Star Troupe Top Star, I found myself seeing her in a respectable light where she was "amazing" in her growth as a stage performer. I was grateful and glad because I could perform with her on stage, and we shared so much time together thinking of how to create better performances. Also for Ari-chan (Akatsuki), she was a reliable and amazing double lead, who I learned a lot from!
W. It was your first stage experience elsewhere from Flower Troupe. How did that feel?
M. Even from the way they do rehearsals, I could feel their "Star Troupe Power.ā For instance, Star Troupe members had a strong sense of "Anyway, let's try it first!" in the practice room. I was the type to think through everything in my head first, but as I was thinking, everyone was already starting to move and practice, so eventually I began to follow their style and decided to practice it once first. That's why I knew, if I didn't catch up quickly, I'd be losing track soon enough! So I learned that it was important to have full momentum in rehearsals too.
W. You also performed in "In The Amber Hued Rain". How was Moon Troupe to you?
M. Perhaps it was how Moon Troupe was established around the same period as Flower Troupe, so Moon Troupe was quite familiar to me. But when I actually experienced performing with them, I was surprised with a feeling of, "Wow, they're totally different!" But I also remembered that, "Asumi [Rio]-san and Houzuki [An]-san had taken care of me when I was still in Flower Troupe, and here in Moon Troupe I could feel their vibe here too. I didn't express it well but I could truly feel [their vibe] in my veins."
W. What did you learn from Moon Troupe then?
M. When I was in Senka, I definitely learned more about acting from Moon Troupe! Because Moon Troupe is recognized for being the Acting Troupe, so I was really curious to know what kind of performance or role I'd be playing. Actually during the process, I felt that I learned a ton of lessons there too.
W. You grew up with Flower Troupe, then you performed with Star Troupe and Moon Troupe in Senka. Then you're going to be performing on the Cosmos Troupe stages. Which means you have performed in 4 of the 5 troupes of Takarazuka already. That's quite an exceptional stage career.
M. I'm grateful. Had I performed with Snow Troupe too, then I would have known everything about these five troupes. But I didn't have much time to think about that during my Senka days. That's because I wouldn't find myself familiar with a troupe if I were stepping foot on their stage for the first time. So on the first day, I was more anxious than excited before performing. But when the curtains drew open on the Star Troupe and Moon Troupe performances, I felt the warmth of the audience welcoming us.
W. "HiGH&LOW: THE SENGOKU" is a collaboration stage between Takarazuka Revue and LDH, which starred Katayose Ryota of GENERATIONS and other male actors. Many were surprised with the news of your participation, but did you remember how you felt?
M. Myself and others around me were surprised too. This was right after the Star Troupe performance and it felt like a new wave of challenges for me. It was like a new door was opening to me again.
W. Behind this new door, how would you describe that world?
M. I was able to experience so much of what I hadn't learned in my past career. I was really thankful for the opportunity to experience an external stage apart from that in Takarazuka. When acting with male actors, I thought about how I could utilise my otokoyaku skills so that "I won't lose to the [other] actors!", but at the same time I felt challenged with the limited knowledge I'd learned so far. As I thought, it isn't that easy performing with men on the same stage... During rehearsals, [the director] said, "I know you have a way of thinking as otokoyaku, but now, I don't want you to rely on that too much.
W. When you've turned your lessons into your assets, it must be really terrifying to be asked to let go of those skills.
M. That's right. It was really a leap of courage. I was worried because I thought, "If I let go [of those skills], will people stop seeing me as a man?" But the male actors told me, "When you use your 'otokoyaku' mindset, it's obvious to see that you're trying to play a man." It was really scary to let go of those things, but I decided to trust the people who chose me to appear on this stage, the ones who believed in Minami Maito, and was determined to break out of my shell and play this character.
W. Then there went your first experience.
M. It was really tough, almost like an intense training trip (she smiles). There were many practise stories, and one of them was the performers asking, "Why do you keep your arms so wide?" When I was an underclassman, we were taught to stand as if there was an egg between our sides and arms, and I've been standing like that naturally ever since. So when people started pointing that out to me, I realised that I have many otokoyaku habits that have been embedded in my posture for a long time. That's why it was quite difficult to be asked not to do those postures, but in the end I was transitioning towards acting an "otokoyaku" to acting a "person,ā and I felt my acting mindset changing along with that. Whether I'm playing female, or male, it makes no difference because I'm playing a person anyway. I felt that it was most important to have more connection with the role, and ever since that stage experience, I was able to play my roles more naturally without pressure.
W. After this significant experience, you performed in "The Rose of Versailles 50th Anniversary Concert" with the star-studded cast of Takarazuka Old Girls.
M. From [temporarily] leaving the Takarazuka world to returning back to a world rich with Takarazukaās colours. Honestly, I was confused if I could join such a large scale (she smiles). I never thought Iād stand on the same stage [with these seniors], and as a fan to be able to share the stage with them was my utmost honour. In the practice room, the people who had built the Takarazuka legacy were standing before me and that alone made me so excited. As I took a step forward, theyād help me by suggesting, āMinami-chan, go this way.ā Itās been so long since I felt like an underclassman again and I was grateful [for their guidance]. The practice room was always full of passion and when everyone played their roles, they all looked as gorgeous as ever. Every time I saw them perform, I thought, āThatās it! Thatās what Iām lacking! But what should I do to improve myself?ā To me, those days were overwhelming.
W. Hearing that alone gives us goosebumps to imagine how significant those experiences were to you. And to think that such rich experiences filled your Senka career in the last 2 years is even more fascinating. Looking ahead, what did you want to learn or challenge in the Cosmos Troupe performances? Or what do you want to pay more attention to?
M. There are definitely things that I can train more. What I definitely have now is everything Iāve picked up from my path so far, and also my confidence when I commit everything to perform well. From Flower Troupe days till now, Iāve walked so far and so long in my Takarazuka journey. I feel strongly in my hope that each of these experiences will fill my blood and flesh. But I know that I donāt have the power to move forward alone⦠When my Senka transfer news was announced, I was worried because āthe people who support me may no longer do so.ā Even when [the fans] asked me āwhat performance will you be in next?ā, I didnāt know either, so I felt devastated and anxious about it, and I believe you all had felt the same. But in the end, you still believed in me and followed me. Thatās why I have the power to move forward.
W. Minami-san, youāre definitely not alone. You stand on stage with many people supporting you.
M. To me, Iām really grateful to those two years in Senka. Iām grateful that Iām still in Takarazuka Revue, and thankful that I could appear in a next performance, and once again appreciative towards the people who believed and followed me. I think āthankfulā is too insufficient a word to contain all my feelings, so I hope to repay this gratitude with the coming stage performances.
W. While being a Cosmos Troupe member, your classmate Sakuragi Minato is also becoming the Top Star. Did you say anything to Sakuragi?
M. I congratulated Zun-chan [Sakuragi] for becoming the Top Star and also said, āLetās do well together from now on!ā I feel emotional thinking that we could still share a stage at such a senior year. Iām so glad that I could join Cosmos Troupe since Zun-chan will be a very lively Top Star.
W. What kind of time do you want to spend in Cosmos Troupe?
M. I want to spend the time without worries. Of course I still have to devote my everything to the stage, and that attitude of mine wonāt change even in the future. But how should I put it - I want to make use of the experiences Iāve accumulated and the lessons Iāve learned to be my total assets. I hope I can trust myself a bit more.
W. Compared to your Flower Troupe days, you had more breaks in your Senka days. So, weāre wondering if the way youāve spent your private time also helps you in some way now.
M. It sure does. I got to spend time with my family and take things slowly. But thinking back now, when my Senka news was announced, I was also thinking too much about āwhere to next?ā that to some extent, it didnāt feel much of a break. I worked hard, making sure that I saw many sights, making sure that I showed many things to people, so that I couldnāt turn my eyes away! I worked to my fullest desperately and didnāt find much time to spare at all. I found myself anxious and worried about what to do next. This kept repeating in that period of time. But to conclude, when I transferred to Senka, I was able to look upon myself again, and take breaths slowly. It was a time of self-reflection.
W. So the transfer to Senka was a great reset time for you.
M. Iād say so. It was to the stage persona me, and to the real me, because I was able to face myself , and I felt more like a human again. (she smiles).
W. As you accumulate power, broaden your capacity, itās like youāre back in full circle, returning as more powerful. We canāt wait to see Minami on the Cosmos Troupe stage.
M. Thank you so much. To those whoāve believed in me, and to those who Iāll encounter in the future⦠I hope youāll have more interest in me and support me, and see how this otokoyaku can be such a stage performer. Moving forward, Iāll do my very best and improve myself!

Snow Troupe Top Musumeyaku Retirement Press Conference (2025/06/24)
On the press conference dated June 24 (Tue), it was announced that Snow Troupe Top Musumeyaku Yumeshiro Aya will be retiring from Takarazuka Revue after the performance "Beau Brummell ~The Man Who Was Too Beautiful~ / Prayer ~Prayer~".

Snow Troupe Top Musumeyaku Yumeshiro Aya will be retiring from Takarazuka Revue after the performance "Beau Brummell ~The Man Who Was Too Beautiful~ / Prayer ~Prayer~". She has been praised for her acting and dancing, and has always endeavoured in singing, an amazing Top Musumeyaku bringing a new breeze to the stage. It is very unfortunate, but we look forward to see her further improvements in the coming days.
Yumeshiro Aya
Thank you very time for coming today despite your busy time. In this limited time, I will do my best to convey my honest thoughts to you. Thank you.
āā When did you start thinking about your retirement?
I started thinking about my retirement on the closing day of the Tokyo performance of "Rose of Versailles". I've run across this world [of Takarazuka] for 9 years and seeing many members retire felt like "a bell ringing" to me. At that time, I didn't know when this day would come for me and continued to work hard, but when I saw Ayakaze-san in her hakama (as she walked down the grand staircase in her graduation performance), I knew that I'd also be standing there soon.
āā How would you describe your days with Top Star Asami Jun?
Before we were paired as a Top Combi, we had performed together in the previous national tour, so it was reassuring to know that we will be embracing a new start of Snow Troupe together. When I transferred to Snow Troupe, I knew that Snow Troupe members were naturally more familiar with the troupe ambience than I was. I sought Asami-san for guidance and she always gave me warm advice, so I'm really happy to be paired up with her. I hope to observe and learn more from Asami-san till my last day.
āā What are some memorable roles?
It was my Top Star debut show "BONNIE AND CLYDE". I'm someone who gets nervous easily and I felt more nervous during the debut show than I ever had, but I also felt delighted to perform this show and to play this role [Bonnie]. The memories of standing on stage are so blissful to me that they are unforgettable.
āā When did you tell your partner?
I told Asami-san after we finished the rehearsals for the duet dance in "Crash Landing On You". She said, "I'll support your decision fully, Aya-chan" and she said those words so warmly encouraging, so I'm immensely grateful to her now that I can announce the news.
I told Ayakaze-san when she came to watch "ROBIN THE HERO" / Overture! " and she said "I'm grateful that the day has come when you could finally make the decision." Since I couldn't decide back when Ayakaze-san was graduating, so I'm really happy to tell her the news this time."
āā How did the Snow Troupe members react to the news?
I told the Snow Troupe members before the closing day of the Tokyo performances. They had warmly accepted these news.
āā How did you feel thinking about your graduation?
When Ayakaze-san announced her graduation news, she told me, "Since the times when we were appointed (as Top Stars) were different, I hope you'll be able to find the right time to graduate". At that time, I felt that I'm still not mature as a stage performer and a musumeyaku, so I told her honestly that I wanted to stay here a little more to improve myself further. Then when I played Marie Antoinette in "Rose of Versailles", I believe that was my turning point. I didn't watch "Rose of Versailles" before entering the Revue, so when I was able to face this role, I understood why these plays are moving to the audience. Then when I actually performed on stage, I played my role feeling the most fulfilled than I ever had been. That was how I felt that it is time to conclude my journey as a stage performer and musumeyaku [at Takarazuka Revue].
āā A message to the fans
Thank you for your constant support. Until the last day, I will continue to pursue the way of the Takarazuka musumeyaku in my way. Please look forward to it.
Cosmos Troupe performance "Red Stone" Talk in Kageki
(Note: This is a talk between the leading actor Minami Maito, and the director of the performance Sha Tamae for the Cosmos Troupe performance "Red Stone~ A Distant Cry". This is also the first performance of Minami Maito as a Cosmos Troupe member. Their talk was documented in the early rehearsal period.)

S. I hadn't really worked with Maitii before, right?
M. Yes, there weren't a lot of occasions. You worked with us (in Flower Troupe) for a scene in "Takarazuka Fantasia" and I loved that scene so much. Since then, I've always hoped for a chance if we could work together again, which I've been appealing to you every time we met (she smiles).
S. Yeah (smiles).
M. I'm really happy that we could finally work together this time.
S. I've always seen you as a powerful performer, and as I watched "Top Hat", I realised you were really good at acting comedy.
M. Thank you.
S. I was inspired by how bright Minami had been, so for this script, I created with the intention of allowing the performers to recognise once again the mission of their job, so as to give joy not only to the actors but also to the audience. Our stage is set in 1920s England. Back then in the early 20th century, there were many talented individuals, such as Coco Chanel, and I thought how interesting the play would be with this historical background. People have changed since the period of monarchy and class system. They became more aware of their emotions, and I think it's constant how people feel these "changes" in every era.
M. Yes.
S. The story is simple, one about the reincarnation of family, but I hope to send a message to the audiences' hearts about how warm that era had felt like. We just started rehearsals today and we had a table read once.
M. Yes, the first time with the music too.
S. Personally, Iām the type that prefers having rehearsals quickly done. When we have rehearsed at least once, then the time required to think about the different interpretations or to overcome challenges will be reduced. Even today, we swiftly finished two times of the table read. Everyone worked hard (she smiles).
M. (she smiles). While weāre at the present phase of discovering our role, I realised that even when we tried this kind of rehearsal style [of doing multiple table reads] we can already receive much feedback and comments, to which Iām grateful for. Then when it comes to thinking what else to add into the role, weāll have much more spare time to explore.
S. Especially, the underclassmen werenāt familiar with this style. Since they were used to acting on what they have been instructed, I want to remember how important it is to imagine what happens next in the future rehearsal days.
M. Yes, yes.
S. The protagonist, Alex, is an interesting man.
M. Yes. I knew how straightforward he was. It was quite rare to have such a candid and bright guy.
S. Really? Do you think so?
M. As you said just now, there are many things that Takarasiennes can find in common with their roles, so I thought that Alex might be speaking to me through his words. When I first read the script, that was exactly what I felt. So I paid attention to each line during the rehearsals.
S. Yes. āHistory isnāt written by the great people or the heroes only, but the efforts of the nameless make history as well.ā Thatās what I feel deeply.
M. (she nods greatly). Iām looking forward to how much more we can expand our imagination in the coming rehearsals. Whether itās achievements or mistakes, youāll still point them out to us when we practise, so I want to believe in you fearlessly, rehearsing and challenging more in the practice room.
S. Well, I created the role of Alex easily and clearly. Itās because I know Maitii is the actor behind him. I wrote the script thinking how Maitii will embody the role of Alex (she smiles).
M. (she smiles).
S. Yet in terms of Alexās personality, I find it interesting when you performed some traits that I didnāt think of while creating this role. While I can still feel you showcasing how frank Alex can be, he's also a bubbly person and a rowdy fellow when heās with his friends. So when I saw how Alex interacted with Gino played by Takato Chiaki, I thought āhm?ā at first, but I realised how this was helpful in gradually showing how straightforward Alex is.
M. Thatās what I did.
S. As we throw in many ideas in the process, Iām also looking forward to the coming rehearsals.
M. I was wearing a lot of costumes during the scene āVaudevillianā (tentative translation based on Katakana).
S. Itās a bit of a comical scene there.
M. Thereās a lot of laughter. Itās a fun script to read, so I thought itās all that we can do to execute the comedy (she smiles).
S. The performers in that scene were insane (she smiles). Then later on, it was the dream scene at the beginning of Act 2.
M. That was incredible.
S. That scene had the performers wearing red shirts and lined up because it was a scene of war and fighting. We thought a lot about this scene and threw in many ideas on thinking of how to nail itā¦
M. The music for this scene was also amazing, and I'm looking forward to seeing how cool the choreography pairs with the music.
S. The [English] men were determined to unify Italy [in this war] so everyone was so exhausted from rehearsing that one scene.
M. After that scene, we just all hoped that the curtains would come down soon (she smiles). This goes for all scenes, but I believe that particular scene can definitely show the audience just how much passion we invested in order to deliver a good performance.
S. Yes, and the audience will love how sincere you are when facing the stage.
M. Since you created this play with the sentiments you have for Takarazuka as an upperclassman and our senior, I believe that if we truly understood these feelings in rehearsals, then this will turn out to be a heartful production. This will be my first time acting with the Cosmos Troupe members ever since my transfer, so I look forward to how we can expand our performance and I believe Iāll also be inspired by them. Iāll learn more especially from the friendship of Alex and Gino.
S. Yes, yes. So when it comes to stopping Gino, I deliberately added more friction between the two men. Since Alex is someone who is desperate in action, and determined to stop others.
M. Yes, thatās right. And⦠am I going to have a loveline with Kiyora or not ? (she smiles)
S. Haha (she smiles). Well, maybe.
M. Since I transferred to Cosmos Troupe at the same time with her who Iāve previously worked with before [in Moon Troupe], I hope to create a relationship that only the two of us can convey.
S. In the finale, the otokoyaku wear morning dress, performing the dance formation that Alex did while working in āPALLADIUMā.
M. Oh, it'll give off a British style then. Morning dress.
S. Yes indeed. Iām still contemplating over the dance formation, but the song is amazing. Then finally, could you share your message about this work?
M. Sure. During the show, I [as Alex] reflect a lot about coincidences and certainties in facing myself, but this also goes for myself [as Minami Maito], [I think about] the encounter of this performance, working with Sha-sensei again in these days, and witnessing the start of the new Cosmos Troupe⦠Even though Zun-chan (Sakuragi Minato) is in another small theatre performance, I believe weāre all headed towards a new step forward. With this happy performance in mind, I hope that youāll also think about your encounter and attitude towards yourself, and let us sprint in a āstarting dashā together! In order to create such a performance, Iāll endeavour to face my role, the stage and to the audience, and anticipate the growth we can see in this performance. (she straightens her posture) Iāll do my best!
S. (she smiles). Yes, I look forward to it. At some point Alex sings lyrics which go, āIām grateful for everything every day / To the green and beautiful Earthā. I find Alex someone who knows very well the things we often forget about, which is why he loves to give people joy and loves to see the peopleās smiles.
M. (she nods).
S. So [it makes people think] I want to be [like Alex] too, and there are many of his lines which I believe Takarasiennes can relate to. I cannot wait to show you the performance and we will do our best.

On June 1 (Sunday), Star Troupe Takarazuka Grand Theatre performance Musical "Eyes of the Ashura Castle" and Fantastic Tapestry "Esperanto!" had its final performance.
As Star Troupe Top Star Rei Makoto stood on her final stage, she was embraced by the warm applause by the audience. Upon finishing her last stage, she went to attend the press conference.
Firstly, Rei Makoto expressed her gratitude to the press.
"Just now, I finished my final stage on the Takarazuka Grand Theatre. I'm still so overwhelmed by the emotions, but I'll be working hard again for the Tokyo performances, so please look forward to them."
She answered the following questions in the press conference.
āā What are your thoughts for the Takarazuka Grand Theatre?
I remember my debut stage performance, the time when I first stood on the Grand Theatre stage, the first time I spoke on stage...all of these thoughts ran through my mind. When I thought about "today will be the last time", I felt so sad to say goodbye to this place, but I spent the day joyfully, knowing that it would be a pity had I not done so.
āā What have you challenged in Takarazuka?
I've challenged many things, and 'challenge' is such an important keyword in my Takarazuka life as Rei Makoto. So I will never forget the heart of challenging and take on a daring mindset to take on new challenges.
āā Could you tell us about your final performance "Ashura"?
This is the first collaboration between Takarazuka Revue and Gekidan Shinkansen, so while holding respect for Gekidan Shinkansen on how splendidly they showcased the strengths of Takarazuka Revue, I was able to learn from the amazing qualities of the original actors and incorporate that in my acting.
āā Why did you choose to wear the hakama while walking down the stairs on the Grand Theatre?
I chose the hakama without hesitation. Since I've been wearing the black tails for the finale numbers ever since my debut shows, ever since the beginning, I had decided on wearing the green hakama on the last performance.
āā What are your thoughts for the next Top Star Akatsuki Chisei?
During the performances, she stayed by my side as Yami No Tsubaki and acted sincerely. It was really fun to dance with her in the show, and I also loved Ari-chan (Akatsuki Chisei)'s cute gestures and I felt more assuring to pass Star Troupe to her, and I felt that we were spending each day to showcase each other's strengths in one another.
āā Tell us about the Sayonara Show.
I really troubled over the set list. Since there are countless of my favourite songs, but considering this is the last show in the Takarazuka Grand Theatre, so I mainly thought of songs sung in the Grand Theatre performances, and those that I want to sing no matter what. I could feel the love of Ikeda-sensei that I could revisit my Takarazuka career with everyone in the troupe and I was overwhelmed with the warmth I instantly felt through performing these songs.
āā Once again, what does Takarazuka mean to you?
This is the place filled with my youth. It is because of the audience who love Takarazuka, and also everyone including the staff members who love Takarazuka, that I could become who I am now. As the years passed, I feel more grateful and I wish that this will always be a place full of love. I hope that the Star Troupe members could improve even more and showcase themselves more on stage.
āā Are there any memorable scenes in your mind, or a message you want to share to fans?
After I finished my graduation speech and during the curtain call, when I saw the standing ovation from the audience, I was really moved because the sight was so indescribable.
Thanks to everyone who love Takarazuka Revue, I was able to be so happy now. I will continue to run forward to the Tokyo Performances so please look forward to it till the end.

ā Now that your graduation performance run has begun, how are you feeling?
I donāt want to think of this as my graduation performance, instead I want to be focused on my role in the musical The Pleiades in Blue. But when I greeted the audience during the parade on the opening day, I was overwhelmed with emotions because I knew that: this is the last opening day Iāll have in the Grand Theater. Also during the duet dance, I felt strongly how the audience were warmly watching over us, and I was happy and grateful every day. Since the countdown has started for how many days I have left to stand on the Takarazuka stage, I have come to cherish each day even more and want to spend every day more meaningfully. And I want to continue challenging myself fearlessly, and delve deeper into my role.
ā After your debut stage, you were assigned to Flower Troupe. How were your underclassmen days?
When I first entered the rehearsal classrooms, I was surprised by how graceful the musumeyaku were. This sparkling sight that I saw in my dreams was real before me and I was thrilled because I realised: Iām going to be like that too! I was deeply immersed during those days. As I admired how beautiful the upperclassmen were, I continued to do training for a better body build (LOL). I also loved dancing the rockette, so Iād say my underclassmen days were energetic and enjoyable.
ā Are there any memorable performances for you?
In the past, I didnāt have confidence in my singing, but then I was able to perform in Sou (Kazuho)ās dinner show. At that time, Sou-san said, āNo matter how far Hirame (Asazuki) is, I can still hear you singing loudly and clearly, so I want you to be in my dinner show so we could perform together.ā Even now, those words still give me so much encouragement. Thatās how I learned that I should endeavor my best at any time, and that became my turning point to love singing. In Poem of Love and Revolution, I had the opportunity to act with upperclassmen such as with Asumi (Rio)-san, and I learned that crying is so much more than showcasing an emotion.Ā That was the first time I learned to feel more connected to the art of acting. When I played one of the desert ladies in Golden Desert, it was a dancing role that conveyed storytelling. That was also the first time I did a shadow solo for singing, and so that became a performance where I could polish my performance in singing and dancing.
ā You accumulated more experiences as you were chosen to be the female lead in the newcomersā performance and the small theatre performances.
After I took on my first heroine role in Poem of Love and Revolution, I had reflected deeply on my performance. This was because I regretted how I didnāt really improve my performance between the Takarazuka newcomersā performance and the Tokyo newcomersā performance. When I played the heroine in New Tale of Genji newcomersā performance, I was determined to make use of what I had reflected, but instead this time, I overthought too much that my head was spinning (LOL). I was thinking too much about how I should be performing individually, that I hadnāt been able to fully respond to the other actressesā reactions. Then when I was one of the double heroines (with Oto Kurisu) for MY HERO, I took more time to contemplate about the relationship of different characters, so I was able to consider my interactions with other performers a bit more. My role was also quite a unique heroine, (so the director encouraged me) that even if I was unsure about it, itās okay as long as Iām acting in my best efforts.
ā Then you transferred to Snow Troupe in 2017.
With how long I had been in Flower Troupe, I did feel sad hearing the news. But very quickly, I had a change of mindset realizing that this transfer would allow me to be more familiar with two troupes in Takarazuka. Phantom was a memorable performance to me, because I had played young Erik (the original role was played by Misaki Rion) in the Flower Troupe newcomersā performance of āPhantomā. I was glad to take on the challenge to play Erikās mother Belladova and to me, Phantom is a performance that I cherish a lot. And in When the Last Sword is Drawn, I had said such lines, āThe southern flowers bloom as they crack stonesā, āEndure. There is no flower more beautiful than one that endures and bloomsā. These words still uplift and encourage me. I have encountered many of the memorable performances in my Snow Troupe days.
ā How did you feel hearing that you are to return to Flower Troupe again?
I couldnāt help but confirm and ask them about it again (LOL), but it appeared to be a rare occasion, so I thought (the transfer) might be what I needed. I had spent two and a half years in Snow Troupe and since then, Flower Troupe had also changed, so I was apprehensive not knowing what position Iād be situated in after the transfer. Then came the rehearsals for Masquerade Hotel and I didnāt have spare time to think more about this matter (LOL). There were many lines for my role and director Tani Masazumi was strict. I was really grateful because it was through this performance that I returned to the roots of what acting really means. Later, when I joined the Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss Modern rehearsals, the realisation dawned on me that I was an upperclassman among the troupe members. Through shaping my role, I also shared my insights of what Iāve learnt to the other underclassmen.
ā Then, on your third transfer back to Snow Troupe, it was announced that you would be the next Top Musumeyaku.
I was once again surprised by the transfer news, and in my head, there were only exclamation marks and question marks one after another. But when I thought that Iād be seeing a new world in the Snow Troupe, I was enormously delighted to see the Snow Troupe members again. Of course I felt the pressure that would follow along with taking this position, but I was glad that everyone welcomed me warmly when they greeted me and welcomed me back.
ā Could we ask about how you felt on the day you were officially the Top Musumeyaku?
On the assembly day for our pre-debut performance The Emblem of Venezia / Le Poison -Again-, I was nervous and frozen as stone⦠I found myself at the bottleneck, stuck with thoughts of āwhat I ought to doā. Once again, my head was spinning with questions of whether I should be doing this or that, and in the first few days, I couldnāt see myself progressing. Then, Saki-san (Ayakaze Sakina) said to me, āWe all have our moments of uncertainty, so why donāt we just give it a go first?ā and I remember replying to her, āYeah, I donāt feel quite sure with myself nowā. (LOL) In my underclassmen days, hadnāt I also been trying whatever I could before knowing it? Since it isnāt possible to change something fundamental instantly, I began to tackle the challenges ahead one by one and this is all thanks to the kindness of my fellow Snow Troupe members.
ā Did you find yourself relieving from that nervousness and tension slowly?
I was glad to see people from different prefectures in the national tour performance and was finally able to relax a bit. But for City Hunter, I struggled playing a capable yet soft-hearted heroine who appeared more headstrong than the protagonist. I had been fighting within myself before the Tokyo performances, and was concentrating on thinking only of my role. Even though performers close to my year or my classmates had supported me during our interactions, I never came to realise how narrow my vision had been during the performances.
ā Later, you decided to retire from Takarazuka Revue.
After my debut performance as a Top Musumeyaku, I reflected that all this time I had been running on in full engine and acceleration, rather than setting certain goals for myself. As I continue to stay in Takarazuka, I appreciate how I was even appointed the Top Musumeyaku in my senior years. These thoughts influenced me to make such a decision.
ā Before that, the full performance run of ODYSSEY: The Age of Discovery was cancelled.
When I had decided to graduate, this became a performance that I wished to work hard for, and everyone had done their best rehearsing since the end of last year to the start of this year, so hearing about the cancellation was really shocking to me. But, to learn that even under current circumstances that weāre finally able to perform this show again, I was ever grateful that the audience were present to watch our performances, and in a good sense, it was a time of self-discovery too. It was because of the previous cancellation, that we were able to set asail in the summer again, and I hoped to convey the most of my passion on stage to the audience. And, I didnāt want any performance from those days to go in haste. Even now, I certainly work diligently every day, but it was especially during that period when I felt that I had to make every second count, and I treasure the days before my graduation even much more.
ā Now that you look back, how would you describe your Takarazuka life?
I never thought that Iād love being a musumeyaku so much. From when I entered the Revue, the more I learned, there were more things I came to love, and in the blink of an eye, itās been 13 years. There were tough and difficult moments, but if I never entered Takarazuka, thereād have been lessons I never learned, and experiences Iād never have encountered, so it has been a pleasure to spend some time of my life in Takarazuka. In my graduation performance, Iām playing a role who grows from a child to an adult, and that overlaps with my Takarazuka life. I hope that by embodying the role of Lingling, it could reflect my growth as a musumeyaku, as a stage performer and as Asazuki Kiwa.
ā Finally, could you leave a message to your fans?
If you werenāt here for me, I wouldnāt have worked as diligently as I have for the past 13 years. No matter how much Iāve tripped and fallen, you have all lent your support to me, and thatās how I was able to embark on this journey. With all the gratitude I have for Takarazuka, Iād like to endeavor my fullest for my final stage. Perhaps Iāll be running in full speed, and my hair will be disheveled all over the place (LOL), but Iāll be grateful if you could watch over me warmly. Thank you so much.

By maintaining your body in the best condition, it'll improve your mental health as well

V.Ā It's probably similar to your Takarazuka days, but Shinkansen are known to have long performances. How are you maintaining your physical and mental health?
Y. I do in many ways. I drink lots of water, and take my vitamins..... Also, I eat broccoli when I feel drowsy! I also eat meat but when I'm really maintaining good body condition, then I eat a lot of broccolis and eggs. Oh, andĀ kimchiĀ too!
V. What a strict diet!
Y.Ā My body feels happy about it. So I actually eat a lot during the performance period. There's always food in my fridge.
V.Ā What do you cook for yourself?
Y. I steam a lot of these foods. I'll make boiled eggs or makeĀ tamagoyakiĀ (Japanese rolled eggs)... These aren't really special recipes, but I know that however my body's condition is like, I feel at ease when I eat them. These are the three sacred treasures, in terms of maintaining my body.
V.Ā Whether during your Takarazuka days or after you graduated, when you're not feeling mentally well, what will you do?
Y. I don't really feel when I'm mentally unwell. But for instance, when I feel sick and physically unwell, that affects my mood to feel unhappy too. That's why I will drink more water to improve metabolism, and with that I also eat more food with more protein.
V. With how you describe it, you're like an athelete.
Y. I eat foods with more protein, soak in the bathtub every day with bath salts added, and be sure to ventilate the room once a day to improve circulation... These simple things are important to me. Also, keeping my bedding clean, which are really normal things to do (she smiles). Oh, and laugh more. With that, I don't become too upset or down.
Cleaning your face carefully. Keep your intestines healthy with fermented foods!
V. After you graduated, have you started on anything new?
Y. Starting on something new... Um, nothing really comes to mind. Well, my hair grew longer, so I've been using conditioner that I haven't used in the past.
V. What's your favourite brand?
Y.Ā It's Bioprogramming Hair Beauron. Since my hair has a harder texture, the conditioner is for remedying the damage. I've been using it since that's what my hair and makeup artist has been recommending.
V. I see! Their hair dryer product is also popular too. What are your favourite skin care items?
Y. Rather than my outer skincare, I seem to focus more on maintaining my inner health. That's why I always remember to take my vitamins. Taking vitamins regularly also makes my mood better. I also intake a lot of fermented foods such asĀ kimchiĀ I mentioned just now.
V.Ā Fermented foods are good for the intenstines, which definitely will be good for the skin.
Y. Also, when I wash my face, I make sure that the water isn't too hot, and I don't wipe my face with a towel, but instead with cotton pads instead.
V. It's fundamental to be as careful as possible!
Y. I think keeping my skin as thoroughly clean as possible is really important, so I try not to touch my face too much. Also, I think it's important to let my skin breathe and rest. So cleaning the pores is important. But it's also not ideal to clean my face too much.
The motto not to give herself too much pressure, and the care to do small steps consistently
V. It's true that if you touch your skin over and over again, you may have pimples, so it's a good idea to avoid touching it as much as possible.
Y. If it's really possible, it'd be even better to do facial masks every day, but I don't really have the time for that...
V. Since you're so busy, you can't help it.
Y.Ā It's quite hard to do facial care every day... But since I find my skin certainly brightening up after using facial masks continuously, I'd still think that maintaing skin moisture is still really important, even if I were to choose some more economical items.
V. As expected of an answer from an A-grade student!
Y. Of course, I don't do it every day. I get tired sometimes, then I'll be more lenient with myself.
V. So you're the type that you could accept yourself not doing facial care and saying, "Well, that's alright"?
Y. I think so. I don't exert too much pressure onto myself. That's why,I'm not really the type who must use certain, specific products, rather a natural routine to do the simple things is good enough for me. I'm more of the type to do all the small steps carefully and consistently.
V. Lastly, could you leave a message to the readers looking forward to your stage performances?
Y.Ā I'll be glad when you come to the theatre and feel like "I haven't seen such a stage performance before". And to everyone who's been supporting me, and to those who love theatre, I'll do my best in everything to deliver a stage where you'll feel, "this stage performance is so interesting!", so please look forward and wait for it!

This time, Yuzuka will be playing the lead role in the 2025 Gekidan ā ShinkansenĀ (hereafter 'Shinkansen')Ā 45th Anniversary Summer performanceĀ <Inoue KabukićčćRetrospective 'The Tale of The Red Demon'>Ā (hereafter 'The Red Demon'). As her first play ever since her graduation, social media has been buzzing with the news of her joining the cast. As Yuzuka appeared in a refreshing scarlet all-in-one dress, she talked about her aspirations for this stage performance and details about her future works.
The role of a demon, wife and mother - challenging a new image of "Yuzuka Ray"

V. Yuzuka, you said you've always loved watching Shinkansen, and you'll be making her first appearance! How does it differ seeing Shinkansen as an audience and being involved in the cast?
Y. We actually just finished the table read, and will begin the rehearsals soon, but I've been learning a lot and spending time with the others. So I'm still nervous (she smiles). When I watched the Shinkansen stages, I've always felt such a warm ambience and glamour, energy and power from them. I'm sure the audience will feel that warmth in the theatre too.
V. Understood! Shinkansen has always given an impression that the cast members and the audience are integrated as one.
Y. Ā I also felt such warmth within the theatre company... What I felt on the day of our first meeting was everyone holding their arms wide and saying 'welcome' to one another. The impression I had when I first watched their stages and my impression of them now are mostly similar, so I want to work even harder from now on.
V. You're playing the demon 'Beniko' this time, so what was your first impression of her?
Y. I was so glad that I could play a DEMON role in this Shinkansen work, but I was even grateful to meet with such an amazing role called BENIKO. The story is also interesting, and as I read, I was drawn to many of the scenes. This is also what the director Inoue (Hidenori) said, that this story will be raw and slightly erotic, and I'm already looking forward to how I'll be living (as Beniko) in this story on stage.
V. Ā So you're playing a DEMON role, and how do you want fans to see this new Yuzuka?
Y. Ā This isn't just a DEMON, because Beniko is also a wife and a mother. I haven't played such a role before, so in that sense it'll be a new and refreshing side of me. Also, as I depend on the world view, music, and lighting use of Shinkansen, I hope that I'll be able to bring out my new sides more and moreć
V. While you've stayed in Takarazuka Revue in the past, now you're working with completely different cast of members, that would definitely be a keypoint.
Y. Ā Yes. As I act with the others, I'm sure we'll be able to unveil some new discoveries. I hope you'll enjoy all those different aspects!
V. o play a wife, and a mother, and even a demon... this seems like a really difficult character, so how are you going to approach your role?
Y. As I approach my role, I researched more about the Heian Era when aristocrats and peasants resided and that was my basis. It's complex to have the stances of wife, mother and demon entangled in one role, and what elevates the difficulty more is due to the fictitious presence of a demon. I believe it's necessary to be flexible in incorporating what Inoue the director and Aoki (Gou) the playwright had in mind, so I'll be creating my role while fufliling their thoughts.
Lively and confident in her agility. Looking forward to Inoue's thousand-blow rehearsals!
V. Ā The poster visuals were fantastic! Please tell us how you felt wearing the costumes.
Y. I wore a bright red Heian Era kimono with long hakama underneath. Just by wearing that alone, I could feel myself entranced into the world of this old tale. Also, I feel a unique power in red clothes. Red really encompasses this strong energy, so I want to feel my emotions change as I engage with this colour. Beniko's main motif is red too, so I want to value the colours of red and scarlet red even more.
V. Speaking of Yuzuka - there will be comments of how you have a great sense of body control and powerful dance skills, which are also your charms seen in your Takarazuka days. What do you see as your charms?
Y.Ā I've heard many say that I have a face you donāt forget once youāve seen it (she smiles). And people also say that I have a glamorous vibe. I think having a memorable personality is something I deeply value.
V. A memorable face that captives all of the fans!
Y. Ā Thank you. That goes for appearance, but I'd say that it's also important to reflect my emotions through acting, singing and dancing. To listen to what's arising within me when I'm asked about something, or to sense my feelings when I see something, to showcase that "sensitivity" is something significant to me, so these are what I cherish.
V. Shinkansen doesn't really do musicals, but it's a stage with many difficult challenges combining dancing, singing and action scenes. How have you been preparing for that?
Y. Ah. Yes... I'm feeling totally ready! (she smiles). When I feel ready, it's like stepping on the engine in full power and exclaiming "Alright, let's do this!", and yet we're just starting.... I will do my best!
V. Inoue's direction is renowned to have a 'thousand-blow' impact, are you looking forward to that?
Y. Yes! I'm confident that I have such agility to catch up (she smiles), and I'll embrace the challenge with enthusiasm!
Towards the world of unfathomable dancing - her next performance "BURN THE FLOOR - COLOUR MY HEART"-
V. AfterĀ "The Red Demon",Ā you will be performing in "BURN THE FLOOR - COLOUR MY HEART". You've already had some dance lessons.... Please tell us what your impressions were from meeting the cast members.
Y. Ā The dancers and the company staff members were so kind and heartful. Also, they spoke about their love for dancing as well!
V. That's exactly like Yuzuka.
Y. Ā Perhaps it's because when you cherish dancing, that dance naturally appears in your daily life... When I communicate, I can feel my body moving naturally along. When I meet others' eyes, I want to dance longer as if to extend a greeting like 'Hey!'
V.Ā It's almost as if dance centers your life.
Y. For men and for women, male and female dancers give me the same vibe. They began dancing, as if we were chatting about "How's your day", "How are you feeling". Such an impression was fascinating. They see dancing as a communication method and enjoy it in such a cool way... Ballroom dancing and social dancing are dances for social communication, and I've felt thatthoroughly in my lessons.
V. What were your impressions of "BURN THE FLOOR" performances you've seen so far?
Y. I believe it's really as their name says: it's about "BURN". As if they're really igniting the stage with such ardent heat to the point as if the stage is filled with fire and it will burn down anytime. They also go down to the audience, and you might say that's just the dancers dancing, but this passion on stage spreads to the audience as well. The company members invite the audience with such a grand welcome with such passion.
V. And when we see Yuzuka on stage, we'd definitely want to join in and dance as well.
Y. That's what I think. With a feeling that you can't help but dance, this would be an exhilirating performance. Please look forward to it!

I've graduated from Takarazuka today (on April 27). I am overwhelmed with gratitude to everyone. I feel lonely to be leaving from Takarazuka, a place where I have learnt so many, but I'd like to embark on my life in my footsteps in the future.
āā What is Takarazuka to you?
(Before this conference) I knew that this question would be asked, and had wanted to think of an answer. But at that time, (graduating) didn't feel real to me and before I knew it, I was working hard every day on the next rehearsal. Now I will say, that it is the most sparkling place in my life, that's what Takarazuka is to me.
āā Moving on, what is it that you want to try in the future?
I'm going to start thinking what I want to pursue in the future. I love learning, so I'm going to find something to learn.
āā Why did you choose the black tails for your final costume?
Back in the Grand Theatre, when I wore the black tails to deliver my speech, my fans (wrote to me / told me) that I looked perfect in black tails, and also because there weren't many scenes where I wore black tails in the performance, so I wanted to appear in black tails before everyone again.
āā You're no longer going to play an otokoyaku anymore.
It's true that this marked my end as an otokoyaku, but I'm always thinking of achieving breakthroughs - such as how to approach my role sincerely, or what I want to present in a performance as a stage performer.
āā The sayonara show included songs, in which their lyrics conveyed your thoughts. What message do you have for the audience through the last song "Future Revolution"?
As said, I chose my favourite songs which best expressed the words I wanted to convey, and those became the setlist for the sayonara show to send my messages that I have yet told the audience. 'Future Revolution' of "Die Rauber" represents...my wish. The song was so compatible, that I wondered if it was written to be performed in a sayonara show. The lyrics 'With everyone's smiles, a new world is born' are so grandeur, and it was the best song that best showcased our motivation of how we wanted to perform on stage. I sang this song (with my members), because it would be great to convey this feeling to the audience.
āā The troupe leader (kumichou), Matsukaze Akira had said, that she had been watching you over as someone glamorous and reliable.
I am very moved to hear that. Kumichou is one year more senior than I am, but she's someone who can see through me for who I truly am. I am very glad to hear these words from kumichou.
āā Are there any regrets you have in your 18 years of Takarazuka career?
I'd say... I don't have regrets. (These 18 years) has been really fulfilling and satisfying, and that's the best feeling to have.
āā What were you thinking when you saw the audience holding up the penlights?
The penlights turned blue when I sang Star Troupe colours, and pink when I sang Flower Troupe ones... and I resonated deeply with the fans. Truly, this is all because of my fans in Takarazuka. It was because of the fans who supported me along the way, that I could continue to work harder. I am nothing but thankful.
āā Do your flowers today carry any significance?
There's no special meaning to it - I just thought they would look fabulous with my black tails. I hope that you could watch me to the end as an otokoyaku, so I've chosen orchids and callas.
āā Any plans for marriage?
(She smiles) About that... I don't have any plans yet, yeah.
āā Any words for your juniors?
I've learnt so much from you all and I am only grateful. I have so many words and thoughts I want to convey to you, but I'd like you all to stay healthy and energetic, and enjoy the stage the best you can.

First, the playwright of this production, Aoki Gou will be greeting you. Thank you.
Aoki: I am Aoki. Thank you for coming in your busy time. This time, I received a proposal from Inoue, asking if we could do a play about an old tale, about āsomething that happened a long time agoā. Just about 5-6 years ago, I also wanted to write a story about a devil, but since this was just when āThe Demon Slayerā was a great hit, I thought it didnāt seem right to write about it then, because it would seem that weāre tailing onto its popularity and writing a similar one, thatās why I stopped writing then. But now slowly, I restarted on writing the story of the demon, and taking inspiration from stories that Iāve read and old tales Iāve researched in this period of time, this time I was able to create a story about a devilās past. Thatās all Iāll talk about, thank you.
Thank you. Next, weāll ask the Gekidan Shinkansen director Inoue Hidenori to greet us.
Inoue: Thank you for coming today. Gekidan Shinkansen has had stories about using devil as a motif, thereās āThe Eyes of Ashura Castleā, āThe Devil Living in the Oboro Forestā, but more of these treat devil as a conqueror, or a metaphor for a nation, so there had never really been a story about the presence of the devil itself, as a monster in an old tale. So I thought, itād be great to have a fantasy to unravel the origin of a devil as it is told in a fable. This time, we have Yuzuka as our main cast members so we thought this was a great opportunity and we want to take on this new challenge and thus this became a main direction in our production. So compared to how Gekidan Shinkansen had taken the image of devils, I hope that we could bring a nuance that conveys the distinct unfamiliarity and terror you feel for devils in fables⦠I wonāt necessarily say itās like those Northern Europe kind of horror, but if this could bring some of its nuanceā¦I also hope that this story shows a more erotic/appealing side of a devil and its different colors, which could paint a different tone than what Shinkansen had delivered in the past. We also have younger members in our main cast this time, so you could almost see this as āa party of handsome guysā, and the audience could also enjoy this show happily.
Now, let us invite the actors to introduce themselves. First weāll invite Yuzuka Ray who plays Beniko, the mysterious wife who disappeared from Minamotono Ao, played by Suzuki Hiroki.
Yuzuka: Everyone, thank you for coming today. I am Yuzuka Ray. When I heard about the news, I was thrilled and excited. I was really delighted with this opportunity and felt so happy about it. When I read the script, it had been 9 months since I graduated from Takarazuka. When it was my first time meeting the other actors and reading the script together, and also my first time having a table read with male actors, all of it was very new and stimulating to me. So I am very excited and looking forward to creating this production with all the members.
We look forward to it. Next, weāll have Saotome Yuki playing the devil Tochinoki.
Saotome: Itās been four years since I joined a Gekidan Shinkansen production, and Iām returning as a devil rather than a human. Four years ago, in the production āKitsuneās Lifeā, I played the character āKitsuneā and at that time, I had a lot of character props such as these mechanic ears that move on its own and a tail, and I wonder how my visual or little props Iād have for my character this time so Iām looking forward. Thank you.
Thank you. Then we have Kyan Yukata, playing Sakagami Kinnosuke, a vassal for Ao and a devil conqueror.
Kyan: To be part of a production of my favorite Shinkansen Gekidan, a theatre company that I love and admire so much, I honestly asked āWhy me?ā when I heard the news. Usually, Iāve heard from others more of my reputation as a strange guitarist in a strange air band, so I thought if our company bribed Shinkansen Gekidan for me to receive such an offer? But of course, this is news Iām grateful to receive. Since Iām part of the cast, I hope to use 120% of the power to do my best. If I become a hindrance, then I will refund the appearance fee back.
Saotome: Yes, he said that.

Thank you. Then we have Ichinose Hayate, playing Momochiyo who is another vassal of Ao and was kidnapped by devils.
Ichinose: I am Ichinose Hayate. Thank you for coming to the conference. To me, since this is my first stage performance, Iām really delighted with this opportunity to be part of this Gekidan Shinkansen production, especially when this theatre company is one with history and loved by many. At the same time, I feel nervous to be acting with the cast members, but I will do my best. Yet, everyone has been so kind ever since the first day of table reading, so I have greater determination to do better. I wish to make use of the different things Iāve learned from you and not to become a hindrance and endeavor to contribute well in the team. Thank you for coming today.
Thank you. Then, we have Higuchi Hina playing Fuji, the daughter of Beniko (played by Yuzuka Ray) and Ao (played by Suzuki Hiroki).
Higuchi: I am Higuchi Hina, and this is my first time joining a Gekidan Shinkansen stage production. Iāve seen their performances before, and I was really in awe. and I felt myself drawn to the story of the protagonist, and captivated by the charms of the world the productions conveyed. When I heard that I would be part of the 45th anniversary performance, happiness and excitement filled my heart, because this is a dream come true to me. We finished the table read a few days ago, so Iāll be more serious in the rehearsals that are commencing soon, but I also hope to enjoy this joy and happiness of being part of this production, and be concentrated and determined to the end.

Awane: I am Awane Makoto. Thank you for coming. There are many incredible characters such as devils and warriors appearing in this stage production, so I hope to do my best as the village head, a representative of other peasants. Chibata: I am Chibata Tetsuya. Thank you for coming. Since Iām neither āa member in the party of handsome guysā, nor am I in the team of āyoung actorsā, and Iām probably the oldest actor in this cast, so I will do my best, hoping that I wonāt become a burden to the other actors.
Thank you for your simple introduction. Lastly, we have Suzuki Hirkoki playing the aristocrat Minamotono Ao, whoās been searching for Beniko and Fuji for the past 10 years.
Suzuki: I am Suzuki Hiroki. Personally, itās been 7 years since I have been in a Gekidan Shinkansen production, so Iām truly looking forward to it. And Iām really glad that this is a fantastic year to celebrate the 45th anniversary. To Gekidan Shinkansen and fans of Gekidan Shinkansen, congratulations on the 45th anniversary! Yuzuka: Thatās true.
Could you tell us how it was?
Yuzuka: It was really stimulating and fun. I enjoyed interacting with everyone. Even on the first table read, we kept laughing and had such fun interactions and after the table read, we were determined to create a stage that the audience would enjoy.
What impression do you have about Shinkansen?
Yuzuka: Glamorous, dominant, and numerous action scenes. My heart was drawn to such action scenes, and it shows just how energetic Shinkansen stage performances can be.
As Iāve introduced just now, you are playing a wife role⦠and it makes my heart beat just saying it. You are playing wife and husband together with Suzuki. How does that feel? How would you two describe?
Yuzuka: Yes, Iāll play your wife. Please take care of me.
Suzuki: Sorry for the trouble, Iāll play your husband, please take care of me too.
I feel like thereās still some distance between us during the table read.
Yuzuka: Still a bit awkward between us.
Suzuki: Even at the table read, she was looking at whoever sheās acting with, and I regretted it, because I should have memorised the lines better (to do that too).
Yuzuka: Because you were sitting opposite to me at the table read. We just happened to look up at the same timeā¦
Suzuki: You were looking straight at me, and I wanted to act with you too, but I was relying on the script too much, and it wasnāt possible at that time.
Yuzuka: Me too, weāre the same. But it was fun to act with you the first time in the table read. So I hope that we can work well later on.
Suzuki: Yes, I hope the same too.
This is Suzukiās second time performing on a Shinkansen stage 7 years later. Could you share any memories from your last performance, or any advice youād give to first-timers, such as āit wouldāve been great if I did that last timeā?
Suzuki: Well, that was 7 years ago. Compared to now, of course I had more difficulties back then. It was through performing that I was able to clear off such obstacles. Through the lessons Iāve learned, I hope I'll do even better and progress more (as an actor) in this stage. Last time, I performed in āSeven Souls in the Skull Castleā and back then there was a double-cast arrangement. So during rehearsals, I only participated in half- that is half of the time I was watching (the other actor) and in the other half I rehearsed. But this time, Iāll be rehearsing for the full length of the play, so I hope to work even harderā¦But forgive me, if it seems like Iām going to practise a certain scene for 1000 times⦠(T/N = Suzuki uses the phrase åę¬ćć㯠āfielding one thousand balls a rowā, a baseball reference which means continuous practise) so it may be tough. But I donāt yield easily and I wish to do my best in rehearsals.
Inoue also mentioned this just now, āfielding one thousand balls a rowā.
Inoue: Yes, we may be doing just that, rehearsing 1000 times. Yuzuka has probably never done such a role - that is a mother - or at least a feminine role. And sheās playing a demon too, so in the story, you could also see a woman overcoming her demons. Therefore, you may be seeing more of her mild and weaker side. In the past, sheās played these cool otokoyaku roles most of the time, and this time asked to play a completely contrasting character or thing. Whereas Hirokiās character is to learn how to accept this - that is Yuzuka as an improper entity (as a demon) but also with love (towards his wife Beniko). Iām sure this will be totally different from what he did previously in āSkull Castleā, which is why itād definitely be even more difficult, and therefore, yeah letās do this 1000 times.
Suzuki: Iāll work hard!

This is also Ichinoseās first stage performance and even to join Shinkansen. Have you heard anything about Shinkansen?
Ichinose: From what Iāve watched of Shinkansen and last year I watched āBasaroā in person, and I was really impressed. It was super amazing. I was truly drawn to the world view, and itās almost as if I didnāt blink at all because I was so engrossed the whole time. So to know that I could act on such a stage, I was really glad and can only work hard. I regard the action scenes and songs as some of the great charms of Shinkansen and those are what I always want to challenge, and this is a fantastic opportunity, so I wish to do my best.
We know that you do dance but what about singing?
Ichinose: Yes, I love singing, I sing alone at home! I really like singing and Iāve always thought, itād be great if I could sing for work too, so Iām really grateful. Thank you.
We look forward to it. This is also Kyanās first time in Shinkansen and you said youāre a big fan!
Kyan: Yes.
We heard that youāve been manifesting it.
Kyan: Yes I have been manifesting⦠ālike whatā¦?ā As I mentioned, is this really okay?
Not at all, you deserve it. Next to you, (Saotome) Yuki has already been on the Shinkansen stage three times. It seems youāre really close with him.
Kyan: Thatās true. Saotome is like my brother, so weāre close and this time I hope to depend on him and Iāll follow him closely.
What about you? Do you see yourself as his brother?
Saotome: No, weāre not really that close.
Kyan: Hey????? What are you talking about??? Theyāre going to write it on the internet! āSuperficial relationshipā.
Saotome: No but I have heard Kyan said that heās always loved Shinkansen. He came to watch the performances that Iāve been in and mentioned that heād love to act on a Shinkansen stage too. When he knew that he made it, I was also surprised. āWow, Kyan-san is also on the Shinkansen stage!ā Then when the table read happened, I could feel his nervousness from the moment his voice was tremblingā¦
Kyan: No, stop talking now!
Saotome: I laughed when I heard him say his first line.
Kyan: Nothing like that.
Saotome: He was really trembling a lot.
Kyan: That never happened.
Saotome: Before the table read, he asked me quietly, āWait, isnāt their rehearsal classroom super big?ā
Kyan: Yeah, it was REALLY big! I could truly feel that this is the large scale of Shinkansen. I could see A Lot of Money was invested. Even their lunch boxes are luxurious.
Thatās important, because this is their 45th anniversary.
Yuki also mentioned there will be a lot of action scenes and action scenes among other younger members. What do you think?
Saotome: Yes. Indeed, there will be fighting scenes between me and Kyan-san, I think Iāll be able to completely defeat him.
Kyan: Then Iāll haveĀ to completely defeat YOU. We tried it once at the end of last year, me and Yuki⦠and how should I put it⦠itās a completely different level..so yeah I may be completely defeated by him.

Higuchi has performed in musicals and straight plays before, so what are you looking for this time in the Shinkansen stage performance?
Higuchi: When I watch Shinkansen stage performances, their awesome and splendid action scenes leave the deepest impression on me. So when I knew that Iām part of the cast, I understand that it takes great physical strength to do these action scenes, so Iāve been working out in the gym, and even to raise my training intensity, I ran 3-5km while wearing a mask. Thatās what Iāve been doing⦠Chiba-san, how did you think I did? Since you were so awesome.
Chiba: Not at all.
Higuchi: But really, everyone seems to be moving during the table read. So I also wonder how my character Fuji would turn out to be, and with that Iāll be training hard first and look forward to it.
Chiba: Then Iāll try not to lose to the youngsters and move more too.

Higuchi is playing a daughter this time. How does it feel to have two gorgeous parents?
Higuchi: Yes, Iām so grateful. This is truly my honour and Iām really grateful since this has never happened to me. I will enjoy this happiness⦠Iāve heard that Ichinose and I are the youngest ones, so I will do my best to be as adorable as I can be. I will do my best so please look forward to it.
We mentioned the youngest team, and you are the eldest here, Chiba. How do you think of the young ones, as an almost pure member of Shinkansen? Any advice youād give to them?
Chiba: Advice⦠What should I say⦠Since the performance is long, and there are many diseases going around, so you should have the caution that it's a big thing if you destroy one performance. So in such a long span of a performance, itās important to take it slowly and take care of yourself so that we can finish the full run of performances. Itās okay even if you make mistakes on stage. Because as long as youāre standing till the end.
This advice is great, isnāt it?
Higuchi: Thank you.
And for Awane, this time there are many newcomers joining the Shinkansen stage for the first time. What do you think?
Awane: I can definitely feel the freshness of this cast. I had performed with Yuki and Chiba-san for 6 performances and I also hope to be familiar with this new combination of cast members, so I see myself also following the lead of these guests. Besides, they all come from different backgrounds, so itās like weāre all in for a mixed martial arts battle. I wonder what kind of chemicals reactions weāll create on stage, and thatās something the audience could look forward to.

Lastly for Aoki Gou. Do you customise the characters based on the impression you have for the actors?
Aoki: I would say so, yes.
What does that reaction imply thereā¦
Aoki: Itās my third time working with Chiba on Shinkansen. So itās quite a lot.
Chiba appears almost once every 4 years.
Chiba: But we also met on other occasions apart from Shinkansen. But this time I think I was deceived into this offer. Aoki told me Iād be learning. I didnāt know Iād be learning action scenes this time. It was only later that I heard all there is about this show is fightingā¦
Were there any parts where you felt that you wrote it well, or it was a smooth writing?
Aoki: I almost never think like that. I just do my best every time. When I watch Suzukiās performances, all that Iāve seen is him playing villainous roles.
Suzuki: Thank you for coming to watch.
Aoki: So I thought, maybe I should create a role he hasnāt done before.
And for Yuzuka, I watched āSinging Lovebirdsā once.

Aoki: I was really impressed with her dignified presence. For those that she hasnāt done in Takarazuka, this time sheās playing a female role, so thatās something I hope to write and discover for her. For those that Iām meeting for the first time, I check them out on Youtube first. I wasnāt watching them from their works, because the works had been finished. Instead, I want to look at them at how they talk at their usual self, and pay attention to how their voice soundsā¦thatās how I remember the other actors.

Thereās the phrase of āgiving the demon its gold swordā (T/N = synonymous to the Chinese proverb of āadding wings to a tigerā, meaning dependable and stronger than beyond). Suzuki: For me, what should I do? There are some days when weāll have two performances a day. Even if you may be bringing your lunch boxes, I was thinking of buying lunch boxes on one of those days. So if youāre all fine with it, then Iāll be bringing some delicious lunch boxes.

Awane: Iād say Chiba does give people comfort. Iād think that Chiba gives a sense of assurance to the director Inoue, during and after rehearsals.
Inoue: Of course Chiba is a great actor, but also a wonderful director, so when he observes other actors in such a perspective, he gives advice to these actors in the way they speak in rehearsals. So I see Chiba as a reliable senior that I can depend on.

Since weāll be performing in Osaka and Tokyo for a long run, fellow sleepers can definitely depend on me for waking you up!

Saotome: After the table read, and Inoue also mentioned this just now, that the goal is to bring the realness and vividness, and convey stronger tones that have never been seen before, so I look forward to what kind of chemistry reactions will take place with all the colours of Shinkansen mixed into this musical. But to me, these action scenes often look like going back and forth like āTom and Jerryā interactions and from what I read on the table read, the movements donāt seem that much different from before yet, then if I may, you may rely on me to give you some advice on some movements perhaps.

What about Ichinose?
Ichinose: I canāt think of anything particularly special. I even feel Iāll only be leaning on you more and more. Thereās nothing on my side. But if itās okay, I believe Iām still someone with more physical strength, Iāll do my best to catch up⦠Ah! Iāll do my best not to cause a burden to you all. I know this isnāt something to say you can rely on me for⦠Iāll definitely do my best. Please take care of me.

Ichinose: But Iāve been doing various physical activities in my life, so thatās something I believe I can keep up on.

Inoue: Well⦠I just went with whatever I can when I came up with the story, thatās all. I mean Iāll think of how to make it interesting, but Iāve never thought of myself as being that influential or powerful to others. Iāve just been creating shows as Iāve used to. But my goal is to make every show interesting.
But youāre collaborating with Aoki Gou this time. Surely, we can anticipate the darker colours of Shinkansen, the depths of human relationships, the existence of demons as the themes of the show. Because this will bring a different vibe.
Inoue: This is certainly different from Nakashima's vibe in writing, from how they convey the inner side or perspectives of characters. I believe this collaboration does set apart from what Iāve done in the Inoue Kabuki series of musicals.
We look forward to it. What about Gou?
Aoki: There can be many changes during the rehearsal, so there may be times when Iām asked to rewrite the script and I can rewrite it really fast. Thatās when you can rely on me. I also depend on Inoue a lot, because when he directs me what he wants to do, it may be able to clear up parts that Iām stuck with and I can be resolved from the bottleneck, so I know I can rest assured, and simply rewrite it, because he can create something different out of it.
Itās so amazing how confident you are even when requested to rewrite - this shows the playwrightās strength.
Aoki: Yes.

Aoki just mentioned that he customised the characters based on the impression he had for the actors. For the actors, please tell us if you find any similarity with yourself and your role.
Then from Yuzuka.
Yuzuka: I play the demon Beniko, and I find her a really powerful demon, right? Thatās why I was thinking if a demon could be this powerful, then how much more powerful can a person be if she were having such thoughts. Thatās the impression I have of her during the table readā¦
Inoue: Yuzukaās always endeavouring her bestā¦
Yuzuka: Oh gosh, you scared me!
Inoue: I think youāre both similar because you lead a diligent life.
Yuzuka: Thatās what Iām striving to be.
Youāre also playing as a wife and mother, so how would you approach that?
Yuzuka: This was my first time playing a wife and a mother, so when I heard about it, this is a new challenge for me, and itās truly an honour to take on the challenge.
How about Suzuki, please answer the question.
Suzuki: When Iāve decided on something, I approach the matter really seriously so I wonder if thatās why Aoki wrote my character because of the impression he had on me when we first met. Ao needs to find his wife and for that he goes on a journey so heāll be seeing not only the family whoās dependent on him but also some strange people heāll be meeting on the way. Bizarre incidents happen on the way, and youāll see him silent alone and thinking seriously. Sometimes, I envy the other characters. But I also feel that I have the mission to bring our story back into the right track so I hope thatās what you see in my role. Since I believe that characters bringing the story into right track are also significant, thatās what I want to work hard.
How about Chiba?
Chiba: Whatās customised for meā¦I donāt quite know.. Perhaps itās because I tend to have different observations than others, and thatās probably what Aoki saw in me, so for that, Iāll play the role to be as candid as I can be.
Youāll play the role as candid as you can be. What about Higuchi?
Higuchi: This is a hard questionā¦I was surprised to hear that he customised the characters for us. To me, Fuji also has a strength and a sense of survival. Vines are also known to be resilient plants. (T/N = Vines are pronounced as fuji, same with Higuchiās role) So I once again realized that I need to summon up that quiet strength that is inside of me.
Thank you. What about Kyan?
Kyan: When I first read the plot, I saw these strong and serious lyrics written for my role, but when I opened the script booklet and saw how rude and badmouthed he was, I can tell the role was really customised for me. Thatās when I knew, āthatās what Aoki thinks of meā or āoh, do I really look that bad to him?ā.
Aoki: Not at all.
Kyan: No, but I do express things frankly so I felt like the role was made for me. I thought how much youād have to watch to understand me, so Iām really grateful, thank you.
Thank you. What about Saotome Yuki?
Saotome: Customisation...When I read the script, I realised that after I appeared in a scene, it said that āI was flying away and returningā as if I were some kind of bat. But I have a fear of heights. So I wonder if Aoki knew that Iād rather not have flying scenes in general? But in the script, I think Iām going to somewhat āflyā 2 times? So when I arrived that day, I asked Inoue immediately, āAm I going to be flying?ā Well Iām not in the position now to comment whether Iām going to do that after all. But I first experienced a flying scene in āThe Rose and The Samuraiā and I really said, āOh, I hate it so much, I really donāt want to do it!ā And at that time, the great senior Amami (Yuuki)-san was there and she also had a fear of heights, but if she was doing it too, who am I to say no? But at that time, I had the flying scene way higher than Amami-san and it was seriously terrifying. So this time when I read that I was going to become a bat, I remember feeling so nervous.
Perhaps Gou wrote it because of the impression of how you looked good in those flying scenes.
Saotome: There really was āflyingā in the script booklet, but I was most scared with the keyword ābatā. That changes everything.
What about Ichinose?
Ichinose: I was just thinking, what kind of Youtube video Aoki-san was watching of me when he wrote it? I donāt know if a strange video popped up or not. Perhaps heād think of me as a psychopath for the roles I played before. But in the end, I read the script, considering that itād be great to think less about othersā opinions and go ahead with what I think is correct. As introduced just now, Iād be kidnapped by demons. Then I thought, āThe demon must be tired if Iām fighting against it a lotā. I was imagining, if I was really taken away by the demons, Iād be resisting a lot which would exhaust the demon. So I thought that Aoki really understood me to write such a role for me. And Iām simply happy you created a handsome role for me, so truly thank you for that.
What about Awane?
Awane: Since I play Yasohachi who is a village head, and he seems like an admirable figure, but the villagers donāt really like him. āOh, thatās what Aoki thinks of meā¦ā Thatās probably who I am. Thank you Aoki-sensei.
Aoki: Heās completely likeable.
Truly, there are times when the playwright knows you well that they write something contrastingly opposite.

Inoue: The play is written by Aoki and this will be slightly different from what you expected from the āInoue Kabukiā series because this is a play of a vivid fantasy. Contrasted with the last Autumn/Winter performance when we had an OG-level and OB-level of casting, we have a comparatively fresher younger cast, and weāre immensely excited with it.
