I saw on your DNI post that you are against reality shifting. I'm just curious why that would be. I mean no disrespect, just genuinely curious.
Reality shifting is a concept that is defined as detaching from the physical body and shifting the conscious to a different reality. Now, the first thing that I want to point out is that this definition is extremely similar to astral projection and lucid dreaming, depending on the goal.
My problem with reality shifting isn't because of the basic definition, though. My problem is everything else about the concept. Reality shifting is a concept in which the individual attempts to shift their conscious into a different reality, often times the reality of a fictional universe (think of Harry Potter, Resident Evil and other popular franchises for this). People claim to script what happens in said universe before "shifting" to it.
Here is the problem: this is maladaptive daydreaming. Maladaptive daydreaming is defined as a trauma response and coping mechanism in which the individual frequently daydreams long, intense, complex scenarios. It's a coping mechanism that neurodivergent people, people with PTSD and other mental illness tend to have. Maladaptive daydreaming is not at all healthy because it can get to the point of interfering with the individual's everyday life and causing serious problems.
As a person with adhd and depression, I used to maladaptive daydream a lot. Throughout my time in school I would daydream through all of my classes. I'd daydream about the Naruto universe, zombie apocalypses, etc... This started early on in elementary school, when traumatic events started happening in my life. My grades suffered and my social skills didn't develop as well. I'm suprised I even made it to 10th grade before I dropped out and got my GED.
I still catch myself maladaptive daydreaming on days when my mental health is at a low point. I've worked on improving my mental health and healing from my traumas but you can't heal adhd. Adhd is going to be a lifelong struggle for me.
This reality shifting trend is not only encouraging harmful habits in people, but it is also an insult to those of us who do not have control over our maladaptive daydreaming. There are also people with psychosis that have openly expressed their concerns about this reality shifting trend.
