Took forever but I think I got something worth reading (a lot smaller in scope than requested, hopefully that’s not too much of a deal breaker!). Up until now I’ve only ever written from Steven’s perspective but obviously that’s not gonna fly for this prompt, so this was new territory for me.
For reference this is in between “I Am My Monster” and “The Future”.
Connie sat in the Dondai's passenger seat, staring at the image on the phone's screen with the same brand of confusion that was normally reserved for her Calculus 2 textbook. It was a picture of a bowl of cereal with ice in place of the milk, the caption above it reading "you already know what's going on". It was hard to express in words how much she didn't know what was going on.
Steven sat in the driver seat looking like he was going to explode with excitement. "So what do you think? It's pretty funny right?"
"Umm..." She stalled, unsure of what to make of it. Clearly he thought the meme was funny, so maybe she just needed context to get the joke. She forced a giggle and said "Yeah, it's pretty good."
"Keep swiping, I made a few more."
She groaned internally upon seeing the next one, which made as little sense as the first; it was a group of six images (a paper towel roll, a pot of flowers, a tree, a stock photo of a woman, a set of white stairs, and a rectangular piece of cardboard) with only the word "Dementia" in impact font for a caption.
So it wasn't about context then, he was just bad at making memes.
Her initial instinct was to come clean and admit they weren't any good, but she decided against it. With everything that had happened to Steven over the past few months, he could use a break. Plus that dopey, child-like grin of his was just too cute.
"Haha! These are hilarious, Steven!" she laughed, trying her best to put on a good show for him.
Connie continued going through the images, each one more bizarre than the last. Soon her forced laughter became real laughter, not because any of them were legitimately humorous, but because they were so non-sensical that she wasn't sure what else to do.
It must've been contagious, because Steven started laughing too, which just made her laugh even harder, and before long both of them were absolutely losing it over nothing.
"I must be a comedic genius, huh?" he chuckled, grabbing his phone from where Connie had placed on the dashboard.
"Yeah," she said between giggles, "you're a riot!"
