See this is tricky bc... yeah he’d be angry, but that anger would come from confusion and hurt and a mounting pile of stressors and cumulative trauma. It would be a muddled sort of anger and if he can’t pinpoint a Very Good Reason to be angry he’s going to try and supress it.

And on top of that, it’s Halsey. She does what’s best for her Spartans. She must have had good reasons. She always seems to know the wisest course of action. He just has to talk to her and she’ll make it all make sense, surely.

Yeah see I always flounder on how much John compartmentalises his abusive relationship with Halsey, because he’s bought into the mythology of the Spartan Program pretty hard. It would be a very big betrayal of trust, but it would also be one of many sins committed by Halsey over the course of his life, so it’s not like it would be completely surprising to him (unless he still trusts her absolutely, which I don’t think is the case).

One of the few situations I think John would even plausibly lose his temper at her is during that mysterious conversation he had with Halsey directly after Halo 5. He’s beyond exhausted by that point and has had enough time to internalise the decision to go AWOL that I think he would be very unstable emotionally. Beside his encounter with the Flood, this is probably one of the lowest points in his life.

So.... also not the best time for Halsey to demand what would likely be an incredibly taxing and intimate conversation with him.

Yeah it would be nice if John’s self-perception and how he’s currently grappling with his trauma would be actually idk explored by the narrative.

But for what it’s worth I don’t think losing his temper in that scenario would be anything outwardly major. He’d end up being a bit curt with her and Halsey would probably get a bit snippy herself and ultimately they’d probably just. Pause the conversation to have another time, bc I can absolutely see Halsey just “well if you’re going to be like that” bc she can be petty af.

But while I honestly believe John’s trust in the UNSC as a whole is nowhere near what it was, Halsey is someone he personally has a relationship with. When he finds out that Kurt was secretly alive and training the IIIs, he’s not going to be holding that against Kurt. But the difference is that Kurt didn’t have a choice-- and when almost everyone you care about is in the same near-powerless situation as you, it might be difficult to accept that someone both had the power and agency to Not Be A Douche and also just. Did it anyway.

But there might be a level of denial there bc Halsey’s always been at least presenting herself in a favourable way to the Spartans. She’s the one that makes sure they get the best medical care, calls them by their names and plays word games with them until she starts losing. He might outright ignore the implication that one of his staunchest allies was withholding information like that for the past 30-odd years and try to convince himself that she had a good reason, even if she doesn’t give him one.
