Do you have feelings on Gundham X Nagito? I've seen people call them roulette as well since they both play the Russian roulette and I think the parallels between them are very interesting for a rarepair!
Well, I'll certainly have the feelings NOW
I've thought about this dynamic only a single time before but am not at liberty to speak of the context for reasons that I'm also not at liberty to speak of hahaha but anyway! Nagito and Gundham don't intersect much aside from Chapter 4 and even then don't speak directly a whole lot within it? But the times in which they are aware of each other and do speak I think are interesting, especially from Gundham's side because at least for example Chapter 2 stood out as Gundham was outlining for the audience Nagito's stance in the killing game as "gray":
Mostly because Gundham had this level-headed observation on Nagito that is separate from people's usual reactions that tend to dismiss this type of nuance. It's also interesting that it's something that follows these lines from the beginning of Chapter 2 that Gundham says after hearing this from Ibuki:
He goes like:
Since it implies this progression from Gundham utterly not understanding Nagito to understanding him to some extent through the class trial in Chapter 2 by breaking down how he positions himself relative to everyone else. I'm also pretty sure Gundham's called him cursed before but I can't for the life of me remember where because I only compiled reactions to Nagito whenever Nagito was present so anything where he isn't present comes from mere memory aaaaa but then Chapter 4 has a moment where Gundham actually goes out of his way to counter a statement from Nagito about murder for the sake of hope:
(I wouldn't exactly translate this to falsehoods because it's more like he's saying that Nagito is misplacing the argument that he's saying things that are off the mark so to be fair I get why but it could be seen as being about sincerity which isn't the case)
(also wouldn't translate this as avoid it should be more like hate but gosh darn friends I just wanna demonstrate the point)
Which is interesting since it's an instance of Gundham denying a point Nagito had kind of made at Hajime about how living is about hope devouring other hope, but here Gundham denies the hopeful qualities of murder and deems it deplorable by nature. Nagito doesn't give this the time of day much, maybe in understanding the irony of who's saying it right now:
But I think it's also notable how Nagito summarizes the murder but it's by failing to have accounted for any struggle from Nekomaru that he incurs Gundham's wrath, and also shows that Nagito was not considering this struggle to begin with despite the fact that to Gundham, it's the most important aspect of his murder plan. In the end, Nagito is there questioning why he's so angry and while he understands the matter after Gundham explains considering when he does pitch in during that scene (only to basically vanish right after), I think this murder itself is also interesting to think about because it centers on a struggle for who will be the sacrifice because Gundham fundamentally believes that not taking action is like resigning life itself, where Gundham seems to prize struggle, whereas Nagito was willing to sacrifice himself and didn't care for his own life to begin with, which to me would have some dots connecting on how Gundham also wouldn't be a fan of him potentially in the way that they have very different views on life, so this gray stance Gundham retrieves from observation didn't reflect positively on him and he disagrees with him by principle. Nagito never expresses much and Gundham only really talks about these principles in Chapter 4 where Nagito seems to have other things to think about, but I'd say this fundamental disagreement is a point of interest. Both dabble in the concept of sacrifice, but go about it in a completely different way. Maybe these are the parallels you're talking about?
Both Nagito and Gundham seem to have their views based off of experience with life and death, Gundham more on the side likely of frequently observing other animals and the ways they survive and Nagito with the turbulent life he led due to luck. I think the way nature works in how each species inherently vouches for survival has Gundham see things based on individual desire fueling survival and so he has a very strong sense of self and assigns that also to animals in his respect for them, which runs somewhat counter in perception to Nagito who sees a higher purpose to things and would have no scruples in the realization of that higher purpose because he can believe in a type of good that will occur later. I think, though, that it's hard to come up with a scenario where the two would face each other when it comes to their ideas, not only because they seem to kind of ricochet off of each other in terms of the material that pops to mind when they speak but also because Gundham only yapped when everybody insisted on his motives and he seemed to not want to impose his beliefs on people? so I feel like the same would apply where he wouldn't really want to debate people on what he believes because it's what he thinks and that's it, and then Nagito wouldn't really get much feedback or rather probably would be bulldozed by Gundham and so I'd see the two being so self-assured that we wouldn't be getting the enemies to lovers of all time so easily.
I do also think though that both are really observant and Nagito in the Prologue has this sort of composure where he more or less attempts to decipher what Gundham is saying and then ironically vice versa where Gundham seems to sort of be able to calmly observe Nagito so not only do they have a similar depth of thought about life and death, they also are both perceptive and also both lonely or feeling isolated in general, and Gundham while able to play the fool is clearly intelligent or else Chapter 4 would not have gone down. Gundham is also able to take action definitively and as both him and Nagito are very self-assured, there definitely are commonalities... And I'm gonna ignore all of that for now and stick a cat on Nagito this is the fastest way this is the most efficient way I'm sorry but Nagito finds a cat and it's injured and shows it to Gundham because it's Hope's Peak school grounds (it's time to be in UTDP NOW) and Gundham does know how to treat it since basic wound and does take care of the cat but the cat returns of its own volition to Nagito clearly it's now his familiar and Nagito is distressed since he's never taken care of a cat before and it would be better off with Gundham for sure which would get to Gundham because the pact has already been sealed!! Should you break it by force your soul will be tormented by its powerful hex forevermore!! (by which he means the heart will hurt in regret and guilt for not taking in the CUTIE KITTY)
I think one of the really cutie things about Gundham is he seems really hardcore but then whenever he talks about his animals he is very considerate and caring and wants to give them like the best possible conditions ever so then he would probably be considering their feelings and so my logic here was Gundham sees the cat likes Nagito so if possible would want Nagito to pull himself by the bootstraps provided he is good enough to take care of an animal to provide it the affection it craves you heathen take responsibility NOW and then also by the way he speaks to Hajime about getting familiars and judging people by their experience with animals, Gundham seems to maybe see some kind of inherent benefit to having experience with or having a pet of some kind and so would want Nagito to experience this too Now that you have exchanged blood vows (Nagito got scratched while carrying the cat), cutting the red string of fate by your own hands is night impossible... After that cut is purified, I will impart the forbidden knowledge upon you! (Gundham will telll Nagito the general characteristics of taking care of a cat)
(it is non-negotiable)
Except while Gundham says it's impossible and just fate and that Nagito will be cursed forever (which probably makes him flinch for a bit but wait a second this cat is neither auspicious nor unlucky) but it turns out it actually is negotiable where Nagito probably says something along the lines of understanding where Gundham is coming from and that it's an honor getting advice from the Ultimate Breeder but that he can't accept that responsibility lightly which Gundham would have that one calm smirk like So be it. If experience is what you lack, I will grant you permission to step inside my domain once more without being obstructed by its special barrier (there's a gate in the shed) You will see for yourself how strong your pact with this demon beast truly is... and Nagito sees that also as a chance to visit which makes sense he brought the cat in to begin with so he agrees and so it begins phew I managed a set-up for them to talk thank you Cat House Komaeda inspiration
So then when Gundham is leaving for the breeding shed (it's real I swear), Nagito goes up to him immediately to approach all smiling komaeda sprite and Gundham is shooketh Do not dare get closer if you want to live!! and Nagito like I'm sorry! Was it actually a bad time? I was thinking of visiting... and Gundham is like recomposing himself because while he knew that this was arranged, the time hadn't been set and so he wasn't expecting that Nagito was going the exact moment he would head over there but anyway he lets Nagito follow a bit behind him as the two strike conversation probably with Nagito talking about how amazing Gundham is because he takes care of such a variety of animals in the same place that it's no wonder he's said to be able to speak to them and Gundham would probably just do that whole laughing thing where he talks about how of course he can do that because he's Gundham Tanaka and Nagito can match that like that's right you're really special and with that special you'll create hope for this world! but Gundham might end up calming down and saying that in fact it would be the opposite as he is a being of madness and destruction and the like, and that he is a being far from associated with hope
And Nagito would go quiet and stare until they're there and he sees the cat and the cat approaches Nagito instantly and if anything now Nagito is trapped You have allowed yourself to fall for her (gender already respected of course) machinations and now you will be unable to return to the mortal realm! (the cat is lying down in a perfect cutie cat circle on Nagito's legs) Consider yourself fortunate if you will have the ability to walk after this encounter... (it will make you very sore) and Nagito would roughly match this connecting the dots like Hahaha, that would be really inconvenient! What should I do? while marvelling at the cat purring and being in his presence because probably rare that animals are on the long-term nearby but he's listening to Gundham who is pretty much solely talking about how to approach and pick up and touch a cat in general without scaring them and also otherwise being super attentive to the animals around him and I'd imagine that Nagito wouldn't say anything for now and just the next day and the next day approaching Gundham to visit at which point he would eventually blab how he really does think that Gundham would become a symbol of hope despite what Gundham told him and Gundham would probably fully deny this since that's not his aesthetic he's one of DARKNESS he's the SUPREME OVERLORD OF ICE those near him would tremble in despair just hearing his name but Nagito would be like Is that so? But... That's not how it looks like in this so-called domain, you know? You're loved by this many animals... And even your classmates respect you in various ways. There's nothing hopeless about that. You're undoubtedly someone who shoulders hope, so even if darkness is the motif here, I'd say you should at least reconsider-- and Gundham has to cut him off Silence! A mere mortal who has not even accepted his familiar yet has no right to dictate my way of life! and Nagito would apologize like S-sorry! You're absolutely right! It was presumptuous for me to give my opinion like that. I just couldn't help but be impressed by seeing your talent on full display here... And Gundham would be on the flustered side like Th-then you must leave before you are intoxicated by the aura of my realm! It is nigh time I am spared of your interference! But Nagito would be like I can't... I fell for her machinations and can't leave freely, after all. And both would go quiet, and Gundham would turn around to tend to something else to get away and say Once the bell tolls, set her down gently. and lets him stay because Gundham is cute
I gotta speed the plot up or else I'll be here forever but what I'm guessing could happen is that Nagito would be intrigued by Gundham who despite his grumble grumble vibes treats him like an equal in talking to him about taking care of animals and seems to be also smart and really cool unlike him of course and Gundham meanwhile would be very entirely not used to someone going out of their way to try to understand him and would be at points just driving him away suspecting that Nagito is visiting for some other purpose but the purpose was actually because he is interested in Gundham how could that be he is being deceived by his words but all Nagito wants of course is for Gundham to achieve big things which unfortunately isn't happening sigh and Gundham meanwhile doesn't really believe in the h-word and if anything starts to pity Nagito because he doesn't want anything for himself if anything he would benefit from the pact he has formed with his familiar and does manage to finally shove the cat on Nagito but the catto follows Nagito anyway and Nagito stops by for Gundham anyway so then nothing changed Gundham is the one who has truly been hexed for he keeps coming back! But Gundham not being much convinced by the words Nagito says about respecting him would maybe put his foot down and say that he would have to prove that through his actions as rather than following him he must practice what he has learned from being in the shadow of the overlord and I think at least to me it would reflect on the idea that Nagito doesn't truly just want them at their best but is projecting this ideal he would have wanted on someone else but Nagito wouldn't really imminently understand that from Gundham pushing him away
So then there could be this arc of Nagito sulking because Gundham won't let him in and now Gundham hates him but that's only natural how could someone so cool have even tolerated him for so long in the first place... Only for our resident supportive Hajime to stop by (I love this guy) and say that there's no way Gundham hates him because he's looking out for him all the time since cheer up and talk to him already wasn't he testing you? Which urges Nagito to blab the rest of the circumstances and put his thoughts together and then go back to Gundham who is trying to drive him away but Nagito would say he is there because he is drawn to Gundham himself and was truly happy being there because he is kind even to him and that he would at least want to know more from him for the sake of the cat and while this technically means Nagito didn't say everything, Gundham does let him in (for the sake of the familiar of course obviously ahem) and would acknowledge Nagito's attempt to assert his will but that it's not enough yet!! but would also maybe say that he can tell there are no lies to his words and that if so, then maybe... potentially... one day... ahem it's nothing but this is kinda funny actually by both being loners they are both currently struggling to get to the heart of the matter from being flustered and from their own insecurities, but it would end up being that both would end up being honest that they want to spend time with each other and so maybe by the end Nagito could touch Gundham at all and I think it would end ambiguously in that sense where they had established being kind of friends of course because Gundham stuttered it first took it back but then Nagito was excited so maybe he made a bit of an exception but then by the end in thinking of anything more Nagito would already think he likes him but the two of them would also not admit to this outright at all and would stumble and fumble their graduation away thinking that the future would be cool if they were together
In that sense the potential sequel sounds kind of funny, I'm seeing the gimmicky vision here where technically Nagito is the most straightforward here but has enough self-esteem issues that at particularly important moments and also the more he thinks about it the more he will fumble thinking he could be in the way or that he wouldn't be appreciated the same way he appreciates Gundham, but I suppose in that sense if officially established in some way would become pretty forward and tease him which is why that potential sounds funny also in that sense, but Gundham himself also seems like the type to be very distrusting and also not wanting to really lose to the idea of trusting someone so easily and would take a while to process changes that are big before putting his foot down and making a declaration on their standing also with how stubborn the two are I'm thinking that later later down the line they would have some horrible fights but I feel like in those instances Nagito is likely to fold first and then Gundham later in retrospect. But at the same time I think there would be certain things that are in the realm of common sense that for some reason the two would have the exact same sensibilities on and have similar reactions, and while Gundham would as if relegate the thinking to Nagito, he would then join in with something that pops to mind and so problem-solving would be funny in that way where Gundham is kind of a free spirit but at the same time ends up returning anyway he was totally listening he is that kind of guy. Nagito would probably easily offer to handle anything that involves communicating with other people about business things only to be impressed at Gundham totally being able to do it, though I'd guess Gundham would allow it to some extent because I'm not sure he'd enjoy that type of conversation anyway
I think that also ultimately at that stage of talking to each other they would talk more or less in depth about views they have on life, and I think to Gundham the matter of Nagito's lifespan wouldn't be something that he wouldn't be used to experiencing and he would see that as more reason to live through that lifespan to the fullest in the best conditions but I think he wouldn't much talk about this and change topics in some way and Nagito would notice and they would sort of incorporate each other's thoughts in some way or another after having this understanding of each other's backstories because both seem to see observation as everything and so what Gundham experienced would naturally lead to how he thinks and vice versa so there wouldn't be this conversion on either part but they would sort of accept that the other would think x way maybe? I think it could be cute in the end the sequel is where it would get cuter actually I'm so sorry I'm depriving you from the part where Gundham and Nagito would wrap their minds around the fact that they like each other that way and in the process Gundham would put his foot down on this matter which would allow Nagito to be shooketh and then also accept and make some remark about how it looks like nothing changed but actually everything is different because he's connected all dots about Gundham and so would take advantage of his tsundere for his own amusement indefinitely but the other way around would probably happen where Gundham also connects all the dots on Nagito and tsundere strikes back it was super effective
I don't know I'm just sorta making stuff up I'll hide in a corner since I feel like I've probably squeezed what my mind could come up with and also it took forever and the post is super long aaaaa-- There's more I could have done with these two in different settings etc so this is just what popped to mind first but like with anything else one can find the opportunity to contemplate the headcanons through practice though crying sobbing do I know what a Gundham Tanaka is... Either way I am always here to think of Nagito Komaeda with people so very thank youuuuu for the ask which gosh took me a while to reach thus also thank youu for your patience <3333
my miis keep complaining when i give them an outfit thats a near recreation of the chracter theyre based on and every time they do i feel this image go through my head
OK lads but. Why is the r slur coming back. It's 2026. Why am I hearing so many of The Youth use this word liberally and at whim. Do you need me to ground you. Do I need to sit you on the naughty step. Do you need me to strap you into the Learning Chair and deliver a 4 hour lecture about the history of the r slur, ableism, and why using that word is neither big nor cool. Or do you just need me to punch you in the mouth.
