All kitted up for golf this afternoon.
Booked a Round!
I finally booked my first tee time! This Sunday I’ll finally find out what all that time at the range has actually done for me. A friend of mine and I are playing nine holes at a local course, and I’ll honestly be happy if I shoot anything better than a 70 (gotta set that bar low). I’ll be sure to update after the round, hopefully to gush about how much fun it was.
My latest thrift store diamond in the rough: a TaylorMade SuperSteel Burner sand wedge.
FG-17 Testing and WITB
Finally took my newly-obtained Wilson Staff FG-17 Tour Blade irons to the range the other day and I see what everyone meant when they said they were incredibly unforgiving. Shots feel like hitting steel balls and go almost nowhere unless you hit the tiny sweet spot, but wow do they feel amazing when you do hit it. Going to keep at it to force my ball striking to get better. I also finally picked some clubs to pull out to get back down to 14 in the bag. I liked my KZG CH-1 driving iron, but I like what I can do with my woods more. I also stopped clinging to the nostalgic and ambitious idea of hitting long irons and pulled the 2 and 3 irons out since I couldn't hit them reliably. I've settled on carrying these clubs for now, though I'm not 100% satisfied with my wedges. A new sand wedge is probably at the top of the list. * TEC+ Driver * Callaway X 3 Wood * Pro Formula 4 Tour Series 5 Wood * Wilson Staff FG-17 Tour Blade Irons 4-PW * Titleist Vokey BV 52-08 Wedge * Wilson Sand Wedge * Carbite 6006 Tour Insert Lob Wedge * Pinemeadow PGX Putter
Manassas Hills Golf Club
Google searches for golf courses near where I live in Manassas, VA kept showing a place called the Manassas Hills Golf Club, but I couldn’t find any other information about it. I mentioned it to my wife, who said that she definitely remembered it being nearby but that it was shut down and houses were built on parts of it. I set out to figure out what was left.
Using the old GPS location from Google as a guide, I headed down a small side road. I’m very impressed that this sign has survived given how long it appears to have been since the course was operational.
I climbed up behind the sign, which has a bench behind it, and found this practice mat in the grass. Based on the rest of the area, it doesn’t look like the right location for a driving range, so I’m guessing the mat was tossed here at some point later.
This was the view across the grass from where the mat was sitting. Pretty, and very overgrown, but doesn’t look flat enough to have been the course.
This trash can shaped like a golf bag was also standing next to the bench. The fact that it’s bolted to the ground is probably the only reason it’s still there.
I followed the arrows on the sign and found what appears to have been the original entrance to the course, including the main sign, which is still standing.
The entrance is flanked by two curved walls, behind one of which is a little structure. The road is currently unpaved, which I can’t imagine was the case when it was operating. I drove a little ways up the dirt road but didn’t encounter anything that looked golf course like, though there are several houses that back up to the land. I did not photograph the area where the houses were out of respect for privacy.
The field just past the entrance was the first area that really looked like it could have been part of a golf course.
That’s it for now. Hopefully I will get another chance to drive back over and explore a little more. I really want there to be something left that’s recognizable, like a bunker, a green, or a tee box, but I don’t know if anything like that is left given the condition of everything else. I hope you enjoyed reading this, and happy exploring!
Just got my latest thrift store find all cleaned up and ready to go. I check the bins periodically since I’ve found a few gems there (my favorite of which is my 52º Titlelist Vokey wedge) and did a double-take when I saw this 2-PW set of Wilson Staff FG-17 Tour Blades. They’re in pretty decent shape, with only the 6i having some brown spotting on the face, and I’m pretty sure they’ve been re-gripped because the grips look practically new. So excited to try these out.
I usually think blades look worlds sexier than cavity-backs, but these are the first affordable irons I have ever lusted after.
It’s U.S. Open time! With roughs high enough to hide your shoes and greens as fast as concrete, this should be pretty entertaining. So glad that non-stop online streaming of major tournaments has become a thing. Happily watching the feed of Spieth, Johnson, and DeChambeau while working.
