It would be unfortunate if anyone should be left with the impression that a problem in design can be worked out, like a problem in mathematics, by the application of known rules; or that a design can be assembled from prefabricated parts, like an automobile. Design is not the product of any assembly line, no matter how well organized, and it is not evolved in any laboratory, no matter how well equipped. There is a non-rational, non-predictable, non-volitional element in design, and this element is the vital one. It is the spermatic force contributed by the designer himself out of his own vitality, and without it the work, however intelligently planned, never comes to life.
