Word otherkin will be 22 years old
An upcoming anniversary in the otherkin community:Â On July 9, 2012, the word âotherkinâ will have been coined 22 years ago. It was coined in the Elfinkind Digest, a mailing list which is active to this day. On that date in 1990, one participant, Torin, used the word âotherkinâ as a variation on the earlier word âotherkind.â Both phrases were casually improvised as an abbreviated way of referring to people who identify as other kinds of creatures. Â
(Source: Elfinkind Digest #71. The archive of this document is still extant, and I have read it. Thanks to the mailing list moderator Râykandar Korraâti for making this primary source available to me while I was researching our communityâs history book, the Otherkin Timeline. Thanks to Torin for permission to share this information.)Â
Right now, the word âotherkinâ is nearly 22 years old. That means that any otherkin who are currently in their teens werenât even born until after the word had been coined. There are lots of otherkin who have considered themselves to be otherkin, of a kind, even years before the word had been coined. Detractors sometimes claim that otherkin is merely a passing fad popular among youth, but this is evidently not the case.Â
Any thoughts on the significance of this passage of time? Where were you at, as an otherkin, 22 years ago? Anybody want to make plans for the 9th, to set it aside as a day for thinking about otherkin things? Maybe a party for reminiscing, maybe even with costumes and artistic âglamour-bombsâ?Â
Hereâs the anniversary again. Tomorrow, on July 9, 2015, the word âotherkinâ will turn 25 years old.
This year, the word âotherkinâ recently turned 32 years old on July 9, 2022.
The top post in this thread from 2012 is where I first proposed observing it as Otherkin Day, unless if anyone can find earlier references to that. The original post is gone, so I was grateful to find this particular post had been archived on someone elseâs blog.
And so did the word otherkind, being otherkinâs elder sibling by a a few months.
Iâve now got a page on my website titled A Brief(ish) History of the Word âOtherkindâ based on my reading of the contemporary Elfinkind Digest, which talks a bit about the coining, trends in usage, whether it included elves at first, and whether it included animal folk (todayâs therians).
Thanks! Folks, Arethinnâs essay is excellent, I highly recommend reading it.
Happy Otherkin Day once again! Now in 2024, the words âotherkinâ and âotherkindâ turn 34 years old.
i swear people freak out about the tamest shit ever
"they identify as animals" thats nice, sharon
"no but they actually think they are animals" theres a war going on, sharon
"like they wear masks and run around in all fours and even bark at people" sharon the war
Npd sure heavily effects the questioning process A Lot! Like do i actually think im this, do i have a high link to it to quantify it being a voluntary identity, or do I think itd look cool in my bio and thats it? I literally Dont Know
Firstly, I have huge respect for spirirtual therians and otherkin. This is not meant in any way to offend anybody whose kintype is also a past life. If it does, I am sorry.Â
Basically what Iâm saying is that kintypes and past lives are two different things, although for many people they crossover. However, this is not always the case.
I made this because the misconception that kintypes are always past lives is very common - something that caused me a lot of worry when I first joined the community, because I had no idea that psychological therians / otherkin existed, and Iâve spoken to other psychological therians / kin whoâve had the same experience.Â
Alterhuman Dysphoria
Something in-between but not quite there.
If i posted this back in 2015 this would have been an easy 20k notes. But now itâs nothing. It doesnât mean anything to anyone

You don't owe people anything.
You can be an angel yesterday and the devil himself tomorrow. Change your mind. Cross your heart. Don't be afraid of what "they" think when you find yourself - and remember that you can find yourself over and over again. That's life, and I think it's kinda beautiful.
Alterhuman culture is climbing random surfaces

omgomgomg dragon folks. what kind of dragon are you?
western dragon (4 legs, 2 wings)
wyvern (2 legs, 2 wings)
amphithere (2 wings)
wyrm (no limbs)
lindwyrm (2 legs)
lung (long, 4 legs)
drake (short, 4 legs)
something else (tag/comment!)
I often wonder why a dragon was left in charge of a human body, like thatâs a odd choice
you don't actually need to know your kintype and what you look like down to the sliver of green in your left eye
it's nice to know. we all want to know ourselves and we want to know why we feel the way we do but
if you don't know
that's okay, too. i don't know. i've thought i was a thousand things. i have been angels and comic book villains and wolves and coyotes and antiheroes and vampires. i move on. i shed my skin.
i finally realized i don't know. and i'm trying not to let it claw at my flesh anymore.
cranky because you canât sleep with your tail curled around your body arenât you
