There's really not much evidence to support this other than him also being a Major, but since I want to make Major Knight a more complicated, angsty and haunted character, I really like the headcanon that he was actually the Major in charge during the Bitter Spring Massacre.

This is why he's stuck at the Mojave outpost shuffling paper work and doing repairs instead. It's probably what he wanted, too, not trusting himself enough to put himself out on the front again. The NCR also probably considers him too much of a risk psychologically after what happened to be in charge of an active unit again any time soon.

It's not something he could ever forgive himself for and he still has pretty severe nightmares about it. I joke about him being pretty mediocre but this level of horror and guilt is something I could really see him struggle with and fit his character.
