SDO’s Ultra-high Definition View of 2012 Venus Transit
Launched on Feb. 11, 2010, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, is the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the sun. During its five-year mission, it will examine the sun’s atmosphere, magnetic field and also provide a better understanding of the role the sun plays in Earth’s atmospheric chemistry and climate. SDO provides images with resolution 8 times better than high-definition television and returns more than a terabyte of data each day. On June 5 2012, SDO collected images of the rarest predictable solar event—the transit of Venus across the face of the sun. This event happens in pairs eight years apart that are separated from each other by 105 or 121 years. The last transit was in 2004 and the next will not happen until 2117.

Phineas P. Gage was an American railroad construction foreman remembered for his improbable survival of an accident in which a large iron rod was driven completely through his head, destroying much of his brain's left frontal lobe, and for that injury's reported effects on his personality and behavior over the next twelve years—effects so profound that (for a time at least) friends saw him as "no longer Gage."
Just received this areal view from Kenya today! My team just finished installing 4000 meter square of images printed on vinyl to protect the roof of the community against the rain. This is not part of the art project Women Are Heroes we did 4 years ago and that is still visible on this image. Since 4 years we go back every year and that’s what you can see on this images.. the difference of black and white is due to how long they have been put up :) This is done with no autorisation except the one of the community and with no other financing than what we raise via my artworks… Congrats to @etienne @dabouski @takao5020 @seanheart for helping the 40 men on the ground who put it up for their neighberhood. As one women told.me.years ago in Kibera " Art can be useful" :) #kenya #visiblefromgoogleearth (à Kibera, Kenya)
As the sun rotates, the equator moves faster than the poles, causing energy to be stored as tension in its magnetic field. This energy is released during solar flares; the magnetic field lines break and eject masses of million degree plasma into space.
