Japanese horror manga besides Junji Ito?
Kazuo Umezu. I think it tends to go overlooked how Ito’s work is almost a direct continuation of what Umezu was putting out in the 60s and 70s, something Ito himself is quite happy to talk about. In the tradition of guys like Yoshihiro Tatsumi including their influences in their manga, Ito put out a manga a few years ago detailing how Umezu shaped his love for horror.
Unfortunately, a great deal of Umezu’s stories have not been translated in to English (though the Japanese is simple enough that you’d be able to get through them if you’ve been studying the language for 2 or so years).
A few that have been translated: Scary Book, Cat Eyed Boy, The Drifting Classroom, Reptilia. All of these are out of print, though Viz seem to be making an effort to re release some of them, with a special edition of The Drifting Classroom coming later this year. You can also pick up a few of them fairly cheap second hand. https://amzn.to/2HNiGl4
For something more contemporary and readily available, Masaaki Nakayama is quite comparable to Ito. Fuan no Tane and PTSD Radio are good short story collections that have a similar kind of atmosphere you’d get from Ito. Masasumi Kakizaki’s Hideout is also worth reading and has some beautiful art. https://amzn.to/2JR20L4 [Affiliate Link]
