Well in more positive news, my mom and I are making progress towards getting my great grandmother’s sewing machine restored (I checked the serial number and it’s from between 1914-1918!!). We got the cabinet refinished, and now we’re working on finding leads to repair the actual machine. The motor itself is dead and needs to be completely rewired. I need to call my usual machine guys tomorrow because they work on vintage machines. Hopefully if they can’t do anything about the motor, they’ll be able to point me in the direction of someone who can. I’d love to get this machine back in working order so I can use it!

Ok so the usual machine guys won’t work on something this old (fair). My mom hopefully found someone where she lives that might be able to do the actual tuning up work, but he needs the motor fixed first, and I was able to find an electronics guy that’s willing to take a crack at it. Apparently electronics this old are so simple that it should be easy to rewire.

The book I'm reading suggests that Google became so market dominant that most people couldn't name a search engine that came before it, so I'm curious.

I primarily used AltaVista and Yahoo before my 10th grade English teacher told me about Google in 2000. I have such a vivid memory of being like, "oh shit this IS a great tool..." which is hilarious to recall 26 years later.

I also used Search Directories (which are different) like Yahoo! too.

And no one ever talks about the Yahoo! categories/Search Directories anymore. I know it would be an impossible task to try and make one of those these days, as big as the internet is, but I kinda miss them.
