“Typically when I design art, the meaning of it isn't present until later. At the time of creating this, all I knew was I wanted to doodle cute owls, but even so, I still like my work to have some kind of meaning. I finished the design and decided to do some research on what kind of meanings owls are associated with.

There was, of course, wisdom, but I didn't connect with that as recently I've felt uncertain about a lot of things in my life. But among the different meanings I found, one stuck with me. Protection. While I looked more into it, I found people sharing stories about how owls had played a part in keeping them safe.

One such story being about a person who was driving at night and nearly fell asleep at the wheel, only to be woken up by an owl flying over the windshield. These were the sorts of stories that resonated with me. I often don't feel brave and at times need something extra to know I have the strength to do or live through the scary things. The meaning of the word "Bastion" is a fortification. Hopefully, these owls can help give you the courage you need, knowing you are protected, even in ways you might not immediately realize.” - Artist Brittany Alsum
