I know someone who, while discussing ATLA, asserted that Zuko jumping in front of Katara must be purely platonic to have any meaning. That was the first time I'd ever heard it and I didn't have any response because it made absolutely no sense to me. I literally didn't know where to begin.
I've since seen several variations of that repeated online. Because I'm a slow thinker I need time to organize my thoughts. I do try to sit with and understand the things people say. I think I've finally figured it out somewhat:
Friendship can be selfish, and romance can be selfless
I think there's an unspoken assumption at work here that romantic love is inherently self-serving and that platonic love is inherently selfless. So Zuko ending up in a romantic relationship with Katara after saving her life would have been self-serving, and he "gets nothing out of it" if they remain friends (as actually happened in the show) thus rendering the act truly selfless...even though that logic values friendship as worthless or something you get nothing out of.
If the assumption is that you engage in a romantic relationship because you enjoy the butterflies in your stomach, you enjoy how the other person makes you feel, because you want physical intimacy or companionship or someone to buy you dinner, then yes, that's self-serving.
That's also not actually romantic love. It gets called that by a lot of movies and TV shows and books, but a lot of people would rightly call that sort of "I love you because of what you do for me and what you make me feel" attitude by its true name of lust or affection or infatuation.
Romantic love can be perfectly selfless. Hopefully everyone has seen at least a couple of examples in their own life, whether from their partner, between their parents, their couple friends, or just strangers they saw once on the street.
I'd be sitting here all night if I had to list every story where the culmination of the romance is one of the romantic leads doing something self-sacrificial purely for the sake of the other, sometimes in the belief that they won't be able to be together after said sacrifice, but that's okay because this is selfless love without expectations or demands. It's an incredibly common story beat. Titanic and K-Pop Demon Hunters were just the first two big movies that jumped into my head and they just so happen to be two of the most popular movies of all time, if that says anything about how significant this trope is.
Likewise, just because no one's trying to get in the other person's pants, that doesn't render friendship more selfless. You can become friends with someone not because you like them for who they are, but because their house has a pool, or they have a console you want to play, or they'll get you a good grade if they're your partner in the group project. Aristotle classified "friendships of utility," where you're only friends because you find the friendship useful to you, as one of the main forms of friendship for a reason.
Friendship can be incredibly self-serving and toxic. If you are old enough to consume such media, check out not just Mean Girls but Jennifer's Body, Heathers and Trainspotting in the movie department and The Secret History, My Year of Rest and Relaxation, and Elena Ferrante's Neopolitan novels if you'd prefer reading.
Friendship and romance aren't diametrically opposed
A solid friendship is actually a great foundation for romance. These two modes of connecting with another person aren't diametrically opposed, they can and do enrich each other.
So, on that point, I do think Zuko is still doing better than A.ang. In the end, it feels like A.ang's friendship with Katara was just a box he had to check to get to a relationship with her--that was his ultimate objective from literally the first moment he opened his eyes in the first episode--which means he never had a true friendship with her (where his goal was simply to be her friend and nothing more), and therefore their friendship isn't a good foundation for romance. He's in fact guilty of acting out of romantically-inclined ulterior motives (*cough* rescuing her and giving up cosmic energy in the S2 finale *cough cough*), an apparently terrible, selfish thing that people claim Zuko would be guilty of if Katara and Zuko ever got together.
But there's no hint within the story that Zuko is just trying to be friends with Katara because he wants to date her. So don't they have a truer friendship than she ever had with A.ang? And wouldn't that true friendship be a better, healthier foundation for romance?
Zuko's first reaction to Katara wasn't love at first sight, he doesn't have a crush on her that permeates all their interactions, and he doesn't make important choices with the end goal of getting with her. A.ang does all of that. If romance as an ulterior motive invalidates a character's actions and makes them less-than-heroic, it's A.ang who's guilty of that, not Zuko.
Are you allowed to benefit from a good deed? Yes, actually
To hit another angle, there's something paradoxically impossible about setting the bar for doing a good thing as "must be absolutely selfless, meaning you get absolutely nothing out of it, for it to truly count."
First of all, Zuko does end up friends with Katara so he does in fact get something out of sacrificing himself for her--namely the life of his friend. Does that make it any less selfless? I say no: he wasn't acting out of concern for himself but rather for Katara, which is where the selflessness of the action lies.
Second of all, whether he'd get a friendly or romantic relationship following this self-sacrifice doesn't matter, there's no way around him benefitting personally from it. Or anyone who does a good deed, really. Because doing good things is good for you.
There's been plenty of research that shows that buying stuff or going on vacation provides fleeting happiness, but volunteering actually leads to longer-lasting happiness and fulfillment than spending money on yourself. Humans are pack animals! We're social creatures! We are built to thrive when we do things with and for each other.
Should you not hold the door open for the old lady because it'll make your heart happy when she smiles at you and says "Thank you?" You're getting something out of it so it's not actually a good deed, it's a selfish one. Should you do it anyway and wallow in your own wretchedness because you're selfishly holding doors open for the elderly for your own validation? Or, in order to be a truly good person, should you slam the door shut in her face?
There's no winning there. And, I hope, most people can see that this attitude doesn't cash out in the real world. It's a good thing for you to do selfless acts of love and kindness for your friends and your romantic partners, and the fact that doing so will make you a happier person who feels closer to the people you help is a feature, not a bug. It's the positive feedback loop that holds all of our (healthy) relationships together.
So, does it matter whether Zuko jumps in front of Katara because he's acting out of a friendly or a romantic feelings for her? No, not even a little bit. Both could have worked just fine, you could even have both working at the same time, and neither one undercuts his redemption arc.
Does it matter that he jumps in front of lightning because it's what's best for Katara without concern for what it might cost him? Yes, absolutely. Because that right there, whether borne out of friendship or romance, is the essence of selfless love.
as much as I love and live for (and believe me, I DO) zuko confronting a.ang over his treatment of katara, may I humbly offer: katara finding out how m.ai canonically treats zuko and absolutely losing. her. shit. world's most valid, necessary, and deserved crashout
Having Helen and Clytemnestra be identical twins is genius because how poetic and fitting is it that Agamemnon, who used Helen as an excuse to start The Trojan War, who instigated the deaths of thousands and sacrificed his own daughter for his ambitions, only to fall by someone who bears the same face of the woman he politicized?
Everyone is, of course, entitled to their own takes, but I, personally, have always shipped Zutara because I actually do see it as a soft and endearing ship. Yes, initially there's an obvious roughness in their enemies stage. Zuko is harsh and battered and Katara has a lot of growing to do as a person and bender as well. But, I think that's something I really admire about their characters and love about the idea of them coming together as a romantic pairing.
They both fix themselves (mostly Zuko, Katara just grows) for themselves and become better people on their own accord. Neither would be "fixing" the other. They'd be coming together as two full, albeit broken in many ways, people. They're strong, determined individuals with steadfast goals and hearts of gold. Yes, they're both stubborn and passionate and firey, but I don't think this means that they'd be "clashing" or "fighting" all the time, despite their tempers.
In the canon glimpses we get at the end of Book 3, and a bit before that, like in CoD, they are working well in tandem. They support each other as equals, hear each other out, respect each other, uplift each other, and seem to be just what the other needs in times of strife. They have a lovely story in canon of enemies to friends, I just also would have really enjoyed delving into that next step of developing them into lovers.
So in my personal interpretation of how Zutara would go, I do see them having far more fluffy moments and functioning together as a healthy relationship. I see their conflicts as normal, everyday ones that healthy couples have from expressing themselves openly without fear. I don't see them having huge blowouts over things often. And, on the rare occasion they would, brought in from outside forces, I think that because of the deep, mutual bond and understanding they have, they'd work through it together and come out stronger in the end.
I like them being a warm, happy couple together because they've both been through hell and back in the show as kids, and the least they deserve is to have a happy, loving family together. I also think that makes the most canonical sense with the personalities of their characters. As I read the characters and show, I see them as working well together and having the fabric of a longstanding, healthy marriage that would grow old together. That is genuinely how I interpret their relationship based on the groundwork we see in the series.
I'm not doing it to try to prove to antis that ZK "really is healthy or good", that's genuinely how I see the ship. I like the tumultuous enemies to friends to lovers saga that gets them there with enemies fighting on other sides of the lines to eventually come together. But, in my genuine interpretation and also enjoyment, they work wonderfully and beautifully, and healthily in tandem.
I love hurt/comfort ZK fics where outside forces come in. I think that, too, would be realistic to their story. Any tension like that would test any relationship, platonic or romantic, but I see, in the end, Zutara, as best friends and lovers, winding up stronger on the other side because of those things, not fraying at the edges.
And the fandom is vast, so ofc interpretations will vary, as will creative explorations just for the sake of such, but I think there's so many loving, "fluffy" versions of Zutara existing as a couple because that is genuinely how the bulk of the fandom interprets their relationship post-canon based on what we do get of their canon friendship. A lot of ZK shippes see this as the logical conclusion of the two characters coming together based on what they watched, myself included. I do it to please no antis, it's why I like the ship and what I see in it.
I think it's the prevailing, more popular interpretation of the ship, not because of "antis pressuring ZKs" but because that's genuinely the prevailing fanon reading of the characters and how their relationship would be based on the groundwork.
I'm sometimes personally defensive against antis and combat with these things bc it's genuinely what I see in ZK for the past 15ish years. Not that anyone should bother or care what antis say. They want to moralize and use faux activism in shipping to tear people down who disagree with them over minor fictional tastes. Their beliefs are irrelevant.
But, all this being said, if some people do enjoy the more toxic version of B1 Zutara, then by all means, it's not going to be my cup of tea, but I hope you have a great time reading and writing it. If someone wants to do a dark AU, even, then have the time of your life. That's what fiction is about, delving into those themes and exploring them. And if you want to use Zuko and Katara as your dolls to do so, then have fun! It's not going to be for everyone, and it doesn't have to align with canon personalities or anything. It's for fun and creative expression, and I encourage people to write whatever the hell they want, whether me, antis, or anyone else likes it or not!
I like a lot of ETL too, but not all for some of these same reasons. I think some things being described here fit other popular ETL ships that I, personally, am not a fan of for those same reasons, but that's okay. Not everyone is going to enjoy the same things, so if someone wants to interpret ZK more along the toxic or tension-laden lenses of those ETL ships, that's 10000% fine, and I hope they have a blast doing so in both!
I'm pro exploring any themes in fiction with any fictional characters you want! And I'm pro not feeling ashamed or like you have to defend that to anyone. But all that being said, I think most Zutara shippers are in this same boat, and do just genuinely interpret the characters in a softer light, more mature, understanding relationship that would have mature conflicts that are able to be worked out because of how innately they respect and understand each other.
I genuinely think their canon characters and relationships spell out a mutually loving, fluffy, teasing, playful, deep, trusting, respectful, genuine, admiring, caring, and longlasting marriage. That's why I write those things, love reading those things, and enjoy those things in my ZL stories, and I think others would agree.
Some people might not favor this interpretation (which is fine!) but I think it's so prevailing because it is so widely adopted as the most likely for the characters and what ZK shippers genuinely want to see, not in any kind of attempt to make content that appeases to antis or to show antis they're wrong or "water down" ZK to antis or from feeling defensive from them… it's just genuinely what most ZK shippers want and what the majority interpret the ship as.
How the tables have turned. This all time they used the scene, where Aang, Zuko and Katara are acting out of character, to sh*t on Zutara, but now we can't use it anymore because it makes Kataang look bad as well?
Watched Avatar a few weeks ago. Not going to say that I became a diehard fan but I really liked it. I love Zukos social awkwardness, I think he's my favourite character by now.
I also really like Aang, boy is funny and adorable. Same with Toph, she's such a badass and I really like her friendship with the guys.
Iroh. ❤️
As you can see Zutara became my fave ship in an instant, lol.
Katara is just awesome.
I like Azula too, I have some idea for her as well.
I'm not saying ATLA became my favourite show but I enjoyed it and sometimes I'll make some content for the fandom. That's all.👋
have y’all noticed how our tags have been getting flooded with anti-zutara content and constant cross-tagging lately? that’s not a coincidence. on twitter, some kataang shippers are literally encouraging people to come onto tumblr to “fight back” against zutara shippers; and, as you can see from some screenshots, to straight-up bully them.
these people are not in our tags looking for respectful debate or polite conversation. they’re here looking for fights and excuses to harass people over a cartoon ship. (saying that out loud is honestly embarrassing enough already).
another important thing to note: zutaranti is a genuinely problematic person, and you can read more about it. her little bootlicking followers aren’t much better either, constantly copying her behavior, eating up everything she says, going through the trenches to defender her, moving like an actual cult sometimes lol.
and she constantly screenshots our posts to post on twitter so people can dogpile us. a lot of those screenshots are intentionally cropped or taken out of context just to push a narrative. she even screenshots posts from people who responded to her. because her goal was never to have a civilized discussion, clarify her points, or genuinely engage with what zutara shippers are saying. she’s just here to screenshot, mock people later, and encourage her followers do to the same.
so seriously: just block them. don’t engage. that’s exactly the reaction they want.
