the thing so many people don't understand is that the reason wikipedia is generally not accepted as a source has nothing to do with accuracy. wikipedia is (generally) extremely accurate! the reason wikipedia isn't allowed as a source for school is because it's a summary of other sources. wikipedia has correct information, but it gets that information from OTHER places, which are either primary or secondary sources, which lends them credibility that wikipedia technically lacks.

so yes, wikipedia is a GREAT resource to learn new things! but if you want in depth, specific, and creditable sources, don't use wikipedia! use wikipedia's cited sources!!

The amount of people in the notes currently trying to play devil’s advocate and claim that there do need to be ways to protect kids from pornographic content are making me lose my mind, like y'all know you’re just willfully missing the point, right?? These laws SAY they exist to protect kids, yes, but it has been proven time and time again that Christian Republicans/the Alt-Right do not give a single solitary shit about protecting kids. If they did they would oppose child labor and child marriage and actually like teach kids about consent and not try to ban any and all sex ed and not cover up for/defend actual child predators in their ranks.

Kids are the excuse, because really, who in their right mind is going to argue against something seemingly as morally and ideologically pure as ‘protecting children’? In reality these laws exist because the kind of Evangelical Christian assholes who wield MASSIVE amounts of power in this country genuinely believe that everyone should be Christian, and thus they will enact laws that force everyone to abide by(their version of) Christian scripture. Separation of church and state doesn’t matter to them, they openly state that it’s a net negative that needs to be expunged from our government. They fully, 100% think absolutely everyone should convert to their brand of Christianity, by force if necessary, or have their entire lives destroyed. They desperately crave a fascist theocracy and are trying their hardest to make it a reality.

You cannot meaningfully counter the far right until you understand this about them. If you actually start arguing on the basis of protecting children you have lost the plot and bought into their bullshit. This is not about protecting kids, it never was and it never will be. This is about forcing everyone to follow their religious doctrine because their religion specifically teaches that the best thing they can possibly do is convert people, and they should be doing it all the time BY FORCE IF NECESSARY.

Like please for the love of all that is good upon this earth watch this video before engaging with the alt-right because I truly believe you cannot challenge them if you don’t understand how they work.

The counter argument is not “well porn is fine and plenty of queer people make their living through it but we DO need tools to protect kids” the counter argument is “I am not Christian and thus I should not be forced to live by their rules” because again, they firmly believe you should be Christian and you should be forced to live by their rules because their god is the real one, his law should be the law of the land, and anyone unwilling to follow his law should be beaten into submission until they do, or, until they’re dead.

Stop engaging with the excuse, you’re just playing right into their hands. Instead, please recognize the actual root of the problem, because until we do we will never be able to actually stop them.
