This is my last post on this issue because frankly the amount of smug “Ugh Tumblr just doesn’t understand making fun of him is a good thing!!!” posts that over-simplify this particular issue is driving me nuts.

Making fun of bigots and taking away people’s ability to take them seriously is a good thing, YES. 

However, Steven Crowder could not give a single, flaming fuck about y’all turning his “change my mind” thing into a meme and clowning on him because this meme has brought him lots of attention and money. He talks about the meme on his Twitter and on his show. He loves the attention it brings him. It’s brought tons of traffic to his Youtube account and the video the meme comes from is at 5+ million views, while all his other “change my mind” videos are only at 1-2 million. 

His social blade is in the green and he’s gaining subscribers rapidly and getting millions of views on his videos.  This has literally only benefited him and he knows it.

He has “Change my mind” merch, guys. Come on.

He’s banking off of y’all “making fun of him”. It’s stopped becoming a joke and you guys are giving him more exposure and putting cash into the pocket of a literal transphobe because you think photoshopping “Pee is stored in the balls” on his sign is some kind of crushing blow to him when it’s literally the opposite.

Y’all think you’re landing some big “gotchya! tee hee” on him when he’s laughing all the way to the bank while y’all are literally fighting to keep his meme alive and fund his shit channel and his campus trips. He is literally participating in one at SMU as I type this, yet you really keep hammering at @dykean for asking you guys to reconsider spreading his face around for people to find him and his content. Is the meme funny? Absolutely. Is it worth helping a racist transphobe further his platform? No.

So, Net Neutrality has officially been repealed. It was split 3-2.

Now you guys need to absolutely pummel your local congressional representatives with calls, letters, and protests until Congress steps its game up and fixes this so that the FCC can never do this again.

We watched as three men callously laughed about how silly they thought some of the calls were for not being eloquent enough for their taste. We watched as they lied about the internet, even when the truth was uttered minutes before.

Don’t let them have this win.

Make your representatives miserable until they fix this. The news will be worthless to you in the upcoming months, as every major news network is either owned by an ISP or has tangential business with ISPs. They all serve to profit on this. Fact check with extreme prejudice. Don’t stop until your internet is back to where it needs to be.

Neutral.

I don’t care if you’re far-left, far-right, or dead down the center. Do you want it to be where an ISP can choose to throttle access to Fox News or Breitbart on a whim? What about Vox? What if some bad reviews come out for a movie and Comcast throttles it to hide that? What if Netflix is throttled into oblivion so that Hulu becomes the only possible option for viewing? What if you go to start-up a new business and you’re told that you have to pay for the $500/mo “business package” in order to get higher the 0.3 Mbps traffic speeds to your site?

Nothing about this decision is going to benefit how you use the internet.You use it for paying bills, for doctors and hospitals, for school, for work, and for entertainment.

That’s when advocates take it to court! Agency actions don’t need to be rubberstamped by the courts (in fact, courts prefer not to interfere with agency action).

And depending on which district takes this court case, it could end up favoring the FCC on this.

You want Congress to make the decision because then it is written in law, and isn’t likely to be easily overturned.

Net Neutrality has been Repealed.

As predicted, all three men voted to dismantle the protections. Please go to their twitters and call them gopher fuckers.

You may panic, but be smart. There are plenty of lawsuits waiting in the wings. Net Neutrality repeals have failed twice before when taken to court. However- do not bank on it, there is always a chance for this slimy shit to slither right through.

What you should do right now is call Congress and tell them what you think.

If we are quick enough we can force them into using the CRA- the Congressional Review Act. You can tell them you want that. 

We have 60 days to do this.

ok so the FCC voted to start dismantling Net Neutrality split on the party-but i want you to not panic. I was 95 % sure this was going to happen anyways bc fuck the GOP, but here’s what we need to do next.

Take a hot second to just breathe. It’s not over, it’s just gotten a little harder. Just remember that there are more of us than there are of them.

Reach out to your House and Senate members. Today. Urge them, going forward, to oppose the repeal and tell them that we need protection from service providers who could potentially enact deceptive or harmful practices. Urge them to make the original 1996 congressional policy to keep the internet “unfettered by Federal or State regulation”. Use your facts and be quick and to the point. DC Switchboard [phone]

Call your state attorneys general and ask how they plan to address the FCC changes. Ask them to uphold the policy and to urge them to join the letter asking for an investigation into the fake comments submitted to the FCC during the comment period. Find your AG here

Support lawsuits that are fighting for Net Neutrality. Already the NY AG General Schneiderman says he is planning to lead a multi-state lawsuit in an attempt to stop the repeal.

Tell your preferred 2018 Democratic party candidates to add Net Neutrality to their platform. Ask them what they’ll do about it if elected and keep an open dialogue. (remember to personalize your emails! it’s more appealing to their staff!)

Petitions are great, and make you feel nice and fuzzy, but ultimately do nothing. Take a page out of the Patreon debacle that just happened. Clickbait sites are painting today as the definitive “end” of it all, but it’s not. This shit’s still got to go through the courts.

The FCC has tried to repeal net neutrality twice before, and both times it got repealed by the courts.

The voting public’s support for Net Neutrality is overwhelming. Last I checked, 83% of polled voters nationwide are in support of Net Neutrality staying.

Republican politicians and lawmakers are aware of this overwhelming support and have been voicing their support as well.

Doug Jones victory in Alabama was a wake-up call for Republican politicians, letting them know they are not invincible.

Verizon has completed its acquisition of Tumblr parent company Yahoo, and is preventing Tumblr from participating in the day to save Net Neutrality next month on July 12, 2017.  Tumblr can also no longer freely participate in political protest like it did before.

Furthermore, Yahoo senior VP and head of Media Brands and Products Simon Khalaf gave a speech at the all-hands meeting at Tumblr last month, where he explicitly stated that Black Lives Matter is among several communities that the company should focus on converting into Yahoo media consumers. One told The Verge, “Simon explicitly said that Black Lives Matter was an opportunity to [make] a ton of money.”
