what if in the episode Sock Opera after the play was over Stan takes Dipper to the Hospital.
Trying to get back into writing. Couldn't do much because my computer keyboard was broken and now my brain is a little fried from not writing for so long. I'm hoping some of these lil gravity falls asks will get me back into the swing of things! wish me luck!
TW: mentions of a building on fire, smoke inhalation, suffocation, past SH and passive suicidal ideation.
The entire theater was completely destroyed. Some of the seats and rugs were on fire, which was extremely concerning.
The entire stage had fallen apart, the pieces scattered around where his niece and nephew had disappeared beneath them. Stan sprinted towards the stage, heart pounding in his ears over the sound of the flames and the slowly shifting rubble.
"DIPPER! MABEL!" his voice echoed around the theater. One of the walls had caught on fire. Stan shoved fallen boards and metal rods that had held up the light rigging out of his way as he climbed onto the stage.
Soos and Wendy had already left, helping the other villagers leave and collecting Candy and Grenda on their way out. Stan would have gone with them if his niece and nephew were safe for certain.
He heard some quiet coughing on the other side of the stage curtains, one of which had caught aflame. Stan shoved past the one that wasn't engulfed in fire yet and spotted two small shadows huddled near the far wall in the suffocating plumes of gray smoke.
"Dipper!" Stan coughed. "Mabel--" he ran over to them, falling to his knees beside them.
"Dipper can't walk," Mabel said, voice raspy from the smoke. There were tear tracks in the soot that coated her cheeks. Dipper just let out a small cry of pain unable to speak.
"It's going to be okay," Stan answered, trying not to cough. "I'm gonna get you two out of here. Climb on my back, Mabel."
Mabel did as she was told, burying her face against Stan's shoulder, small body heaving with breaths that shouldn't have taken so much effort.
Stan carefully reached his arms around Dipper and picked him up, holding him as gently as possible while also keeping him perfectly secure. He stood up, going slightly dizzy from the lack of oxygen and pushed past the curtain he'd ran through just minutes ago, bolting down one of the less-on-fire aisles to the exit.
One of the glowing orange exit signs showed the way. Stan kept his eyes fixed on it and kept running past it towards the next one, which was over a door.
Stan could've wept with joy when he saw it, but there was no time. He shoved his shoulder against the door, forcing it open and he stumbled out into the dark cloudy night, Mabel clinging to his back and Dipper held securely to his chest.
Immediately, flashing red and white lights blinded Stan and paramedics swarmed the small family.
Voices and hands and sharp sounds. Sirens. Yelling. Someone took Mabel from Stan's back and grabbed Dipper from his arms before he collapsed to the ground, chest heaving, but no air moving anywhere.
He couldn't breathe.
Stan clutched at his chest as a high pitched ringing seemed to pierce through his skull, his vision blurring. He could hear the muffled sound of someone trying to speak to him, feel the weight of a blanket over his back, but he couldn't breathe.
Then there was something put over his face as he was rolled onto his side. An oxygen mask, he registered with the last shred of consciousness in his mind.
Stan's world went dark for a minute, but he fought to stay awake. He could see the inside of the ambulance. He dreaded going to the hospital but he knew that at least Dipper and Mabel would be okay.
The ambulance drove for a while, long enough for Stan to drift in and out of consciousness several times. He could feel himself breathing now, the cool rush of oxygen making his brain less foggy. He could look around the ambulance. There were a couple of paramedics monitoring him, but they seemed concerned rather than calm about the fact that he was awake.
That seemed a little counterproductive. Stan closed his eyes again, resting for a minute as the ambulance stopped.
He could feel the movement and hear the rushed sounds and yells all around him, and yet he kept his eyes closed. Dipper and Mabel were safe. They mattered. He knew the hospital would take care of them.
If he lost his life in the process...there wasn't really anything wrong with that.

Stan awoke as a coughing fit overtook all his senses, his chest and throat hurting more than he thought they ever would.
"Mr. Pines!" a familiar voice shouted over the chaos of a few nurses rushing at him. One of them wrapped a blood pressure cuff around his arm, one was listening to his heart and yet another was typing something on the computer at his bedside.
Stan coughed for a few minutes longer, feeling like he'd never be able to draw air in again.
"Holy--Holy shit," he swore, finally inhaling. "Everyone get away from me," he added, trying to push one of the nurses away with a weak arm. They stayed where they were, however.
"Mr. Pines, don't! They're just trying to help." That was Wendy's voice. Soos was standing next to her in the doorway. They were just blurry blobs from what Stan could see--he was missing his glasses.
"Dipper and Mabel--" Stan coughed.
"They're okay, Mr. Pines!" Soos exclaimed immediately. "They're both safe and awake. Dipper's a bit more injured, poor little dude, but he's doing okay."
One of the nurses made Stan hold still while they removed his IV. Stan sighed in relief at hearing the kids were okay.
"When can I talk to them?" he asked, voice raspy. One of the nurses handed him a glass of water, which he took gratefully.
"Really soon, Mr. Pines. After the doctor sees you," Wendy told Stan, voice gentle.
Stan sighed again, heartrate picking up. He disliked doctors.
---XXX---
The doctor, it seemed, was very...thorough.
"Now Mr. Pines, it seems that while you were only a little burned in the fire, you have a lot of preexisting scars. I'm particularly interested in a few sets of them. You've got some crisscrossed on your arms, some parallel lines on your stomach, and a few of those same on your upper thighs."
Stan frowned. He didn't like this guy. The doctor himself, named Dr. George, seemed to eminate a sort of entitlement that Stan greatly disliked. He also wasn't that old, perhaps around twenty-seven or thirty, which made Stan feel more put off.
"You have nothing to say?" Dr. George asked, raising his eyebrows at Stan, who frowned a little harder in response.
Dr. George looked back at his clipboard.
"To me, it looks like these previous wounds were self-inflicted, Mr. Pines."
"So what? They're years old," Stan lied, knowing full well that some of them definitely weren't.
"Well, Mr. Pines, it seems like you're currently caring for two young children. Self-harm is not a good practice in an individual, so it makes me wonder how stable you really are."
"What?! I'm stable!" Stan protested furiously, feeling his face flush. "And they're only here for the summer."
Dr. George looked unimpressed. "So you admit these are self-inflicted scars?"
"I don't admit anything," Stan said furiously. "And I'm not going to. I want to see my niece and nephew. And so you're gonna finish this stupid exam and then leave so I can do that. I'm not mentally ill."
Stan knew this was a lie. But he wasn't going to let this stupid doctor keep him from Dipper and Mabel.
Dr. George sighed and rolled his eyes like a teenager, which made Stan look at him with utter disgust.
"Alright then. Have it your way. I have other patients to see, who actually want to be seen. Goodbye Mr. Pines." And with that Dr. George finally left.
Stan sighed, muscles finally relaxing, a little shaky after the utter tension and anxiety that had wracked him since the doctor had walked in. Finally he could see Dipper and Mabel.

Dipper was in worse shape than his sister, like Soos had said, but both were healing very quickly according to the nurses who took Stan to their room. He had to use a cane, which was humiliating, but at least it got him there.
Stan stopped in the doorway. The hospital room was well-lit and the curtains were open. Dipper looked up from the book he was reading as his sister jumped out of bed and ran to hug Stan, much to the nurses' collective irritation.
"Grunkle Stan! That was so scary! But we're all okay now!" Mabel squeaked, voice muffled by her face's placement, buried in his stomach.
"Hi sweetie," Stan said with a smile, gently stroking her hair with his free hand. "How ya feelin'?"
"Better," Mabel said with a big smile. "Almost all better. Dip-Dop is still having a little trouble."
"My wrist might be broken. Got an X-Ray this morning," Dipper explained with a tired voice. Stan walked to Dipper's bed, Mabel hanging off his free arm like a limpet.
"Hey buddy," Stan said, as he sat down next to Dipper's bed, pushing his cane aside and reaching up to ruffle Dipper's hair.
Dipper smiled exhaustedly at him, leaning his head into Stan's touch.
"Hi Grunkle Stan," he said softly, voice still raspy.
Stan tried to blink the wetness in his eyes away. Relief washed over him like a tidal wave, erasing the last bit of anxiety tension from the doctor's visit earlier. He reached one arm around Dipper and the other around Mabel, who'd climbed into his lap, and held them both close.
Later, Soos and Wendy would visit, and even later, the small Pines family would be discharged from the hospital. But every single chance he got, Stan would hold both Dipper and Mabel close to himself, from holding hands in the hospital lobby, to carrying them both inside and up to bed when they fell asleep in the car.
Stan couldn't be more relieved to have two healing, breathing children asleep in his house that night. He hoped that soon, he'd have his brother to share the joy with.
As Dipper and Mabel slept and healed upstairs, Stan worked all night, feverishly attempting to repair the portal and ignoring the itch on his forearms, stomach, and thighs.
The End
