[...] some relief for Bay Area renters San Francisco rents are still stunningly expensive, but they seem to have plateaued — thanks to new construction, seasonal factors and the “Twitter effect.” When Twitter announced in January it would be subleasing some space in its Mid-Market headquarters, the move caused other companies to rethink their expansion plans, said Samantha Chandler Duvall, a vice president with Chandler Properties, which manages about 5,000 rental units in San Francisco. “Commercial office brokers get worried, smaller tech companies get worried, venture capitalists get worried — whether it’s legitimate or not,” she said. The average asking rent in San Francisco for all property types — ranging from studios to three-bedroom places — hit $3,620 in the first quarter, according to Real Answers, a Novato research firm. The rental market is seasonal, and the winter quarters are typically the slowest. [...] that was down from a 13.4 percent increase the previous year, according to Real Answers, which surveys apartment buildings with 50 or more units every quarter. Finding a place in San Francisco “was not nearly as bad as I was expecting,” said Sydney Cohen, 22, who started apartment hunting with two friends in mid-February. The roomies are using the living and dining rooms as bedrooms and the smallest bedroom as a common area. “We are definitely seeing it taking longer to rent or turn over units,” said Bill Meyer, whose firm WM Properties manages apartment buildings, mostly in Pacific Heights and Nob Hill. In some cases, rather than cutting the rent, Meyer will convert a dining room into a bedroom by adding a closet and door. The same is happening, to a greater or lesser extent, in San Francisco’s suburbs, said Jeff Bosshard, president of multifamily operations for Woodmont Real Estate Services in Belmont. Landlords could face more pressure if a boom in condo construction makes it easier for people to buy than rent, he said. In the other parts of the Bay Area where his firm does business, “the pace of rent rate increase has slowed a bit, but they are still strong,” Bosshard said.
Of human rights, fair play, and housing The man who is in charge of evicting a long-term tenant in Duboce Triangle got back to me after I had already posted my story (although I called him well in advance) and he’s also sent his spin to sfist. I can’t explain why Ish Harshawat was willing
word.

A new book points to a climate of eviction across the country.
Can’t wait to read Matthew Desmond’s new book.
The city is bulging, the rents soaring, and residents are growing more vocal about wishing Silicon Valley would cool off, or at least pay up.
A friend had alerted us to this. While many journalists had retweeted the photo of our house, we were not expecting this. Our protest art was not directed toward the tech industry as there are many contributing factors to the supply/demand.
Our main issue is that if someone has enough money to own two houses in sf and has 3 million for another, couldn’t they find one that was not occupied as people’s homes?
In an apparent collaboration between two sets of neighbors, the windows of a house in Duboce Park now read "EVICTED" on the top floor and "US TOO :'(" on the middle floor.
The second piece of local press we saw. Moral: don’t read the comments, ever.
We didn’t want to comment ourselves because the issue is larger than us. However, there is much I want to say about the whole experience and how we were treated. Let me just say this: people who participate in promoting evictions should have a bit more empathy. 1. Landlords who laugh about how expensive the rental market is when they are planning to sell the building. 2. Real estate agents who promote “user’s owners” and “developers” (and not printing anything about renter’s rights or non-disturbances)). 3. Lawyers engaged and specializing in Ellis Act and OMI evictions.
4. Potential home buyers who can afford expensive houses, but CHOOSE to buy an home that has people living in it... and evict them.
My experience has been that none of those involved feel any real empathy or shame to this unfortunate situation.
It reads: EVICTED US TOO :'(
This was the first public “press” we saw. We did not encourage nor discourage it.
“Seen from Duboce Park, SF. This doesn't feel good.”
No, it doesn’t, especially when it’s your home. Finding a new place to live within 60 days in the most expensive city in the US is difficult.
“30/366 Good morning, San Francisco. 😍”
at this point, we had been given our eviction notice, but were too in shock to do anything. you can almost see the house of the neighbors who evicted us... they are just a few houses in on potomac. I guess owning two houses in sf wasn’t enough.
“An #SF reality #housingcrisis #evictions”
one of the first photos.
“Saddest thing”
yes. sad to see our home. end of an era.
greed. sf.
“Oh this city... got news that a good friend (and ex housmate) who lived a block away got an eviction notice today and then saw this (different set of…”

evicted. us too :(
