Hello ok not to go on a rant but I'm rlly tired of seeing trekkies put hours and hours and hours of research into fictional alien cultures but not being bothered to spend five minutes looking into where in Africa people speak Swahili just to give Uhura a birth country

I completely agree. It’s a bit ridiculous given the above and all the love that is also given to Extremely Russian Chekov and Very Scottish Scotty. That being said, I always thought she was from Kenya? Like it made so much sense to me I had to look it up just now to realize that it wasn’t canon, but yeah, if Uhura grew up speaking Swahili, Kenya or Tanzania would be the most obvious answers for where she’s from.

Secondly, I think the reason Uhura's background is never really given is bc of internalised racism and the general lack of thought given to Africa in general in fiction. Also, people """"understand"""" Scottish and Russian stuff better bc it's more western but are apparently unwilling to look up basic information about African cultures, clothing, food, etc etc etc

oh it’s definitely the racism. The amount of people who think Africa is some great monolith is astounding. I have to regularly remind people that Africa is not a country, it’s a continent, because there are a lot of people I’ve met in real life who don’t know that apparently, and couldn’t name three countries from Africa if their life depended on it. In fact, I once met someone who thought Egypt was an island separate from Africa and I just... I can’t. GOOGLE IS FREE.
