Scientists have discovered a “ballista spider” that builds a spring-powered silk trap designed specifically to catch aggressive green tree a
kinda wild. spiders usually don't predate ants because they fight back and also summon endless reinforcements with pheromone trails. so this spider builds a web far away from the ant trails, then builds spring traps to yank the ants off the ground through the air and into the web
The ballista spider's snare is bioengineered to store elastic energy in the silk and rapidly release it, giving it incredible instantaneous power density -- greater than any other specialized silk-based biological catapults
There are others?
yes! the paper cites the slingshot spider for example, whose web launches the spider at its prey rather than the reverse. I think what's supposed to be unique about the ballista spider is that the prey trigger the trap themselves; the authors speculate that the spider puts a pheromone on it that induces the ants to attack the snare, which catches them and triggers the spring
they call it amtrak because the trains am on the trak
It's a shame Korean culture is so anti-weed because they have some real great stoner food

I got a “mental health for men” ad on the Matt Levine podcast in between all the wealth management and CRM software companies. Which feels like a positive development— something something toxic masculinity— although I wonder if the sort of people who listen to Matt Levine might become less efficacious at their jobs if they get mentally healthy. Like, you don’t want the guys on your trading floor becoming mindful and renouncing their desire for wealth to instead spend more time with their families, right?
i have frequently had the thought that a lot of what white collar promotions select for is someone with an unhealthy portion of their identity wrapped up in their job
Maybe why degrees are so valued?
It's like vocational awe directed selfwards.

for non mtg players imagine if the head Flavor Scientist at pepsi cola had a blog and people kept going on it to ask like "do you think you'll make a pepsi that tastes like sewage? why haven't you ever made a pepsi with a drowned rat in it? i notice that the pepsi is always on the inside of the can and not the other way round, is there a reason for that?"
