I finished more than half. HELL YEAH. I’m good with that
Also...Marvel Movie Marathon...maybe this winter? Who am I kidding, I will be in grad school. I’m 12 episodes behind in Supernatural, and everyone knows how big of a priority that normally is.
My birthday has officially come and gone. Here are some things that happened this year that weren't on the list.
I watched the entirety of Friends on Netflix
I went to Nashville and DC for work. I had been to DC before, but only as a kid. This time I took some pretty sweet photos of everyone’s favorite phallic like monument. Let me tell you....I was shocked by how much I LOVE NASHVILLE. Seriously. Loved it.
I started making jewelry with a friend and helped her launch her Etsy shop. Recently I haven’t been doing it anymore, because life is getting crazy busy, quick. Still - it is beautiful stuff and I loved every second of making it. She is awesome, just like everything she makes. (https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheWriteTypeJewelry)
I applied for and got into graduate school. Starting in August I will officially be a Kansas State Wildcat.
I pulled my sons first ever loose tooth. And his second, third, and fourth.
I planned a family vacation for this coming September. It is time our children are introduced to the ocean.
20. Commit a Random Act of Kindness everyday
I don’t know if I hit one every day, but I tried REALLY hard. And then, it just wasn't so hard anymore. Kindness is second nature in humans, if we let our jaded and hardened perspectives go out the door.
Little things, like leaving my change for the next person after using the vending machine / letting people out in front of me / being kind instead of being ‘right’
and big things like participating in Random Acts of Kindness Annual Melee of Kindness - better known as AMOK.
For AMOK, Connor and I made tags with nice quotes wrote on them for all the staff at his school, as well as little drawings a sweet notes he made. AMOK fell on a day that our district had Saturday School to make up for all the snow days they missed, so doing something for the teachers and school staff was a no brainier. We also hung ‘Take what you need’ flyers around town.
16. Learn to bake a pie from scratch
The only pie I’ve ever baked is a pumpkin in a store bought crust. Today Krogers had fruit on sale, so I bought a bunch and googled recipes when I got home. (Link to the recipe below)
I didn't have raspberries, so I just used more strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. No lemon juice either, I improvised and cut open a pineapple and squeezed some juice from it. Walked over to my mother in laws and stole her corn starch. Guess what else I don’t have? A ROLLING PIN. I used to have one...how does someone lose their rolling pin? This is what happens when you decide to bake a pie AFTER going to the store.
I tried to use a can, but I ended up just using my fingers and doing the best I could. The lattice would looked way better with one, but other than that the crust still turned out perfect tasting - which is what matters. The entire time, CP sat at the table and serenaded me with Maroon 5 songs, and maybe 3 turns up “Uptown Funk” on YouTube. (He must be a romantic, he is borderline obsessed with the ‘Sugar’ video.) Oh, and ate half of the strawberries. Thank goodness I bought extra!
I am in awe. I cannot believe I baked this. I’m a good cook, when I do cook. But I have never been a very good baker. I burn cookies, I sink cakes, I basically ruin at least some part of the thing I am baking. This pie is perfect. The taste, the texture. The crust is flaky and firm...and I MADE IT. Everyone loved it, and I can’t wait until our raspberry bushes are full and I can do this again with fresh ones included.

(I did sprinkle sugar on top after it was done...because it needed something to help it look pretty)
Lets talk about my failures - part two
I had 4 “health” related items on my list. These are things I thought if I put them on my list, I would be more inclined to do them.
7. Start running
11. Do a 5k
For some reason, every couple years I think running is this great idea. That its easy and free and I should do it. So I start doing it, and then after the second or third day I am icing my hip at night and can’t walk. I always seem to forget I have inherited the dreaded left hip of my father, and his father before him (and his siblings, and everyone else on his side of the family.) So running is out. That gets rid of #s 7 & 11.
24. Attend at least 5 yoga classes
HAHAHAAHAHAAHA who the EFF was I kidding? In all my spare time I’m going to GO to a yoga class? Not happening, ever. Time to get over it.
3. quit smoking
No excuses. I suck.
So, in light of not hitting any of my ‘be healthy’ goals I am creating ONE Giant new goal for 28. And it is ONLY to be healthier -- in whatever form it manifests itself. I am planing on getting a bicycle soon, as we have tons of awesome paths that I could ride on. I ADORE biking, and it is low impact for my stupid hip. So that is something...
Lets talk about my failures - part one
Okay, so not really “failures” ...but lets talk about items that AREN'T happening in the next 8 days.
6. Read all The Lord Of The Rings books - I did read The Hobbit, and really enjoyed it. The problem is TIME. At some point in my life, I will have time to sit down with the longest books ever (or so they seem) and bury myself in them. I found out the hard way that this IS NOT that time.
9. Harvest a deer - See previous post about this one
10. Take a trip sans kids - Good intentions right? The thing is, life changes quick. Things that happened since I made the list a year ago have made it almost impossible for us to feel comfortable leaving our kids overnight. And that is okay.
17. Family trip to COSI - Again...this one will happen eventually, probably this summer. Winter was hell here, and with everything going on we never made it.
26. Go to a drive in movie - Summer got away from me last year, and it never happened. Going to try like hell to go this summer. Probably for the best, now Collin is a little older he really likes going to the movies.

27. Find the perfect red lipstick & ROCK IT.
Bold are the things I’m working on or nearly finished with.
Italics are items that are very unlikely to be completed. And I’m cool with that.
23. Write a short story
A few months ago I signed up for a writing course offered by Tyler Knott Gregson and Andrea Balt. It was 30 days of writing : Write Yourself Alive
Honestly, it was NOT fun. It dug up feelings and emotions that I had long recovered from. But - I enjoyed it all the same. Someone in the fb group started a thread about “6 word stories” - I LOVE IT. It’s hard, and simple, and is fun. It makes my brain work in ways it normally doesn't have to.
I have no desire to be a “writer”, sometimes I just like to write. So the 6 word stories sometimes turned into sentences or paragraphs, that stand alone. I like to think of them as excerpts of what I see happening around me, or tiny musings that pop into my head. I wrote other things during the class, but for now these are all I am willing to share.
Below are a couple, if you are interested. (None of these “go” together. They don’t “go” with anything)
Sentence Stories:
Tenderness, not grace, came with age.
I forgot to miss you.
Crashing into you, fixed my broken pieces.
His tiny face awoke my soul.
Sometimes remembering what you lost hurts worse than the losing.
The first thing I noticed were your eyes. How fitting they are etched on their soft faces.
Don’t pull your hand from mine. They were made to fit so precisely together. It would be a travesty to separate them.
Did no one else hear my heart shatter? It was deafening. I know now what erupting sound the earth must have made when Pangea split into all her pieces. Fault lines roaring as they shudder and pull apart, mountains crash into the sea. Everyone around me continued to smile and make introductions while I was rendered deaf from the noise. Sections of my heart drifting away from each other, never to touch again. Some sinking so far down they disappear completely, like they were never real at all. All in the blink of an eye, I was the only one in a room full of people who knew of the epic change.
Her presence shook me in a way that made my bones feel like they were slipping loose from their sockets.
22. Treat Yo Self Day
A few weeks ago my mom and I took the boys and spent the day. We had a nice lunch, and went shopping. For myself. GASP.
Some might not count this as a Treat Yo Self day…but I never buy myself clothes. I seriously still wear things I’ve had since I did my student teaching in 2010.
I got SO MUCH cute stuff for spring and summer, and two new swimsuits.
I also got those hella cute shorts I’m wearing in the picture, and sported them at my high school reunion. I’ve wanted some patterned shorts FOREVER, so I was pretty pumped about them.
Also…I ordered a Supernatural tote bag from the Always Keep Fighting campaign to use for work next year.
21. Learn to drive a stick shift
This is what my dad taught me in. Because if you’re going to know how to do it, you should know how to do it with a trailer on the back.
I’m not getting a stick anytime soon, but it’s cool to know I could totally do it in an emergency.
It’s ok to be broken, worn down and eroded. It’s ok to show your scars, your boards cracked and curling. Your nails will rust and your rooftops will open, an oculus to the heavens, a tunnel to the clouds. Shake off the dust and rust of all the loneliness that settled stop you and let the light pour through. Only those who are broken, know the ways to shine. -Tyler Knott Gregson-

Marvel movie marathon starts now
because apparently it is never going to stop snowing.
The only ones I've seen are Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, and Thor.
So ready to be in the loop.
# 2.Visit Vegas & #27 Find the perfect red lipstick
It was so much fun, and the weather was BEAUTIFUL! I did end up getting really sick the third night - I'm fairly certain I'm the only person in the world who stayed up all night vomiting in Vegas because of a bug or food poisoning and not from drinking too much.
My favorite part of Vegas was the Fremont Street Experience. It was such a cool environment, so much music and entertainment happening all around. Seeing Britney Spears in her Piece of Me show was the best thing we did. If you are going to Vegas and considering it - do it. Get floor seats, if you can. It was AMAZING. She worked that stage hard, all night. My inner 13 year old self was dead.
Also - I happened to grab a red lip crayon out of a bin when I was in line at Forever 21. I think the name of if is just "Red". Let me tell you - FINALLY. I FINALLY FOUND IT. IT IS PERFECT. Now, it wears off fast, and is a pain to keep re applying but the color was intense and perfect and not too pink or orange. You can sort of see it in the pink toned selfie from Fremont street, but the light show has us all washed out. I'll be wearing it again soon, and will post a new photo once I do.
