Ro2 Challenge: Week 1!

Hello, and welcome to the first week of our Ro2 Challenge! 

In order for new fandom-specific freeform tags to be created, each tag must have at least 3 separate uses by 3 different users (some larger fandoms require 5 or even more!). This is called the Rule of 3 (Ro3). Each week, we will post a new list of a handful of tags one use away from hitting the required amount to become a candidate for canonization as a fun sort of set of writing prompts for you to use if you so desire! BONUS POINTS: work all 3 from a fandom into one fic! Learn more here.

It was an uncharacteristic flash of sunlight on an otherwise overcast day, a glint of metal from behind a tree, a glimpse of yellow in a sea of black mourning dress. It was all the hairs standing up on the neck of a certain British Army doctor and Captain in the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers. It was intuition, or stupidity, poor self-preservation or sentiment. John didn’t think about any of this. Not consciously, at least. In fact, his brain seemed to white out completely half a second before his body made the decision to move-protect-shield. His entire being was narrowed down to one pinpoint – Save Sherlock Holmes.

"No, don't try to stand, it's okay," John whispered, pressing a hand against Sherlock's chest and easing him back to the ground. He blinked rapidly to keep his eyes clear and only Sherlock's state could account for why the famous detective missed it.

"It hurts to move," Sherlock whimpered. His voice was weak and his eyes seemed to search for something he couldn't see. John did his best to keep his own tone up and, more importantly, keep Sherlock calm. There was no room for panic in the midst of a goodbye.

"Sherlock, you have to listen to me," he said, trying not to sound desperate. Trying not to sound like his world was falling apart. "Listen to me, it's going to be okay. You're going to see Mary soon and she will keep you company."

The detective's eyes fluttered for a moment but he regains focus and stares at the doctor. "It wasn't supposed to end like this," he managed. He wasn't quite afraid and John wondered at the child-like acceptance of death.

"No," he agreed, as Sherlock Holmes closed his eyes for the last time. "I didn't want it to end at all."

I love the cutesie romantic Johnlock, but I love the Johnlock that fits canon. John falling asleep on the couch beside Sherlock, not quite touching, his head back on the backrest.

Sherlock picking up takeout from John’s favorite restaurant but not quite getting his order right. John eats it anyway.

John making tea for Sherlock but forgetting precisely what time he said he’d be up and it’s cold when Sherlock finally gets to it.

The two of them making plans to get dinner and then meeting each other there and “where have you been all day?”

I’m totally not in that sort of independent, almost distant relationship, but I think they’re beautiful. I love the Johnlock that is exactly Sherlock and exactly john, just the way their beautiful selves are.
