Room temperature take but the whole "Dreams of a Dying Man" bonus scene should have taken place AFTER Descole walks back inside the ruins. Walk with me here.

Despite being a man of science, he believes in fate. Why? I think it's a defense mechanism he's had since childhood. I think his sanity wouldn't have survived those years alone after giving his brother away without rationalizing it as "This was all meant to happen." As the years went on, this slowly started to fade. He probably thought things would be different then BAM he loses his family again. His brain then returns to this childhood coping mechanism to get him through this.

His first instinct as a child is to study the Azran thoroughly for revenge and now that his brain is back in this headspace he does it again. But this time, he won't falter. He won't be swayed. He will see this revenge through and ONLY THEN will he be worthy to die. In his eyes, to die before that would disgrace his family.

So he gets all the way there. Against his plan, he steps in front of a fatal blast to save a boy he shouldn't care about (and we don't even get said boy's reaction??) and he realizes he's failed. He'll never accomplish his revenge and now he's dying, unworthy. He spills his guts to Layton because what else can he do?

Then he passes out and the Aurora vision happens. This, presumably, is enough to get him to get up and follow everyone. But what's weird about this, to me, is that despite taking her advice at the end, he still walks into the falling apart temple.

NOW I know what you're thinking! He did that so that Layton would think he was dead and forget about him BUT! Him waking up, realizing he can still honor his family yet, dragging himself back to the temple, sacrificing himself for humanity thus fulfilling his parameters for being worthy enough to die, being resurrected but still feeling that fate is guiding him thus causing him to turn back to die with the legacy, THEN a fading Aurora telling him that she forgives him and his family would want him to live??? Chef's kiss.
