What I dislike about 'top hits' radio
Ive recently become obsessed with finding out who is writing these songs on the radio with new and emerging artists such as Daya - who is up and coming as of right now. this is no different from artists who have been around for the last decade or so, somehow managing to stay famous long enough to be relevant. Take for example Rihanna’s latest hit “Work” which has seven songwriters and none of them are Rihanna herself. Obviously this isnt unique to just one artist and I am disappointed to see so many artists up and coming, showing up out of nowhere and they didn’t lift a finger in the songwriting process. Daya is a good example of this. Another great example is Ariana Grande who has just a few songwriting credits out of an entire album release. Im not saying that I dislike these songs or these artists, I just wish that these ‘musicians’ would find their way to the top through means of their own abilities. I like a few songs off the current ‘top 40’ hits, but I pretty much do my best to avoid it and not show my support. Instead I will find another station that is listener supported that also supports musicians who write their own tunes. If everyone did this, imagine how many more independent artists we would be hearing on the radio. Imagine how many more listener supported radio stations would be available to us everywhere. Im typically a very positive person when it comes to music and the music business but I think this is an unmistakable issue or even some kind of epidemic. Think about it. We have some of the same songwriters writing these top hit singles and yet most of us support it without realizing it at all. Im also not saying to only support bands, groups or musicians that are unsigned, but to just be aware of this issue. If you are a musician yourself, support people like YOU. People like you who do as you do - which is writing material that is your own. Take in to consideration that you should be listening to what you like and be proud if you really enjoy the artists mentioned above. At the end of the day, it’s all music.
Just put out this EP and the response has been cool on a local level but what kills me is the idea of it never getting in the hands of people who might need it - the kind of people who want something more out of their music than just hearing focused criteria that fits in their genre category. These songs are so much more than that. Writing this helped me get rid of demonds. There’s literally a potential to unlock some spiritual healing if you are able to listen to the music past the surface level of similarities it shares with modern pop cultured bull shit. I’m sorry to be a hater but anyone who listens to music for a deep reason can admit that it is genuinely hard to find good new music these days, because it’s berried under all this garbage that the industry has saturated itself with. There’s so many artist doing whatever it takes to get themselves in a category that sells music but they all forget to do one thing…Tap into something real and write about heart felt things that push people to believe in something bigger than this stupid grid we live on that seems to only revolve around Time and Money. That is my mission. I believe in what this band is doing with all my soul and I’m not gonna stop writing until I feel like enough wounds have been mended whether they are mine or someone else’s.

Something about local music scenes
So I have been playing muisc in my areas local scene for a little while and let me tell you there is nothing at all like playing/making music with your friends, inspiring people to play shows, or giving someone the chance they’ve never been offered. Some people think you have to just look out for yourself and your band but that’s the worst mentality. Support your friends and you will both grow, go see bands you haven’t heard of, stay through the whole show. Just be part of the scene, hand out flyers, let bands play at your house, tell bands about how cool shows are in your town and bring them there.
It’s all worth it, trust me.
