I. Headcanon

Jack has two major, unique interests: old artifacts and paranormal stories. If a good paycheck or a hit of morality doesn’t push him forward, it’s the exploration and possibility to find something from the past. Most would call him crazy for taking on some of the challenges he does, but his interest lies in what he’ll find during or thereafter. Finding something from the pre-war era gives him something to hold onto – he may no longer have hope for his son or his future, but it helps him fondly remember the past. He feels displaced, having been suspended from the world for two centuries while it continued on without him. Finding something to connect some of the past, even during the two hundred years he was absent from the world, gives him a sense of belonging. No matter how temporary or minimal.

&& his interest in the paranormal? He leaves it at “c’mon, it’s just awesome.”

Back against a graffiti speckled brick wall, Wrench sank into a squatting position and rested his forearms against his knees. Ever so often his line of sight shifted from side to side as he peered down the street for a face he recognized.

There would be none, of course; this city and its inhabitants were entirely new to him and in addition to that fact alone, he didn’t even know what the person he was meeting up with looked like. Sure, vague descriptions were something, but he always had the irrational idea that he’d spill information to the wrong person.. which wasn’t so irrational because it was an error he had already made in the past. This time, he’d not fuck things up before they actually started.

Pulling out his mobile device, Wrench accessed the messaging system.

[ text ]: Yo’! ^^ Where you at dude? [ text ]: I’m by the abandoned fucked up lookin’ building. [ text ]: …….the one behind the shady McDonald’s. > > [ text ]: ………….. with the graffiti that says ‘jason x sara 4eva’ [ text ]: I wonder if they’re still together?

“…” Wrench pauses, his visor flashing [ ? ? ] for a brief moment before returning to it’s default. He was caught off guard by the inquiry, both because he didn’t want to think about it and especially because he didn’t want to talk about it. This was true before he was ripped from his own world; it was true now.

“I wanted to tell him. There were a lot of times where I almost did. There were a lot of hints between the two of us and I think we both knew the option was there, but.. we didn’t take it – or maybe it was in my head, y’know? I’d rather he be my best friend than him not be around at all. I think that’d suck more than unrequited feelings do. Though, now he’s not here at all and I feel like an idiot for not saying shit. Guess that’s my own fault.”

Maybe if he didn’t blink it would move again.

His sight traced the outline of a person; arms peppered in bruises and occasional lacerations, a bloodied shirt collar that trailed down to a ripped seam, dark bags under dead eyes, a mouth hung ajar just slightly; his stare landed on his own reflection. His bathroom was poorly lit by a single bulb that desperately needed replaced; another issue he had no energy to fix in his apartment. It did not hold priority at this moment, not with his current predicament.

He lost time again. An hour and a half; longer than usual, now.

That was issue enough. Dave had work in the morning and it was lights out by one in the morning; he probably drifted to sleep at three. It was four thirty-seven in the morning now, and the first thing he registered consciously was his reflection moving on it’s own. Maybe it was the sleeping pills he took nightly; did he take an extra? Regardless, that wouldn’t have been enough for him to blank an hour and a half of something violent enough to warrant blood, bruises, and wounds.

As he was about to proclaim ‘fuck it’ and leave the room, his expression (not HIS expression, but his reflection’s) began to flood with panic. Skin faded to blue, to purple, as a hand landed on the base of his throat. Tired eyes suddenly pleading with him; please, please.. help. Dave – the real Dave? – lifted an arm to the glass, his reflection failing to do the same. His expression rested on muted distress as he shook his head and shut off the light, leaving the room before the show devolved into anything additionally horrific.

No, not tonight. I’m not doing this now.

Peeling off his bloodied clothes in favor of fresh (only worn twice) pajamas, he threw his used apparel underneath his bed to deal with another time. He took another pill and in a lightless room, threw the bottle in his mess of a closet; a resist of temptation. He just needed rest. His reflection did not have its own will; this is just in his head. Just; a devilish word. Dave fought every instinct to check the bathroom mirror, mostly out of defiance to entertain whoever was watching him, but mostly out of fear that he’d find himself dead on the floor.

Not tonight.
