Studying for my Torts final tomorrow!
FINALS!
Finals are up soon, and I only got two weeks left of classes! Crunch time!
4 weeks down!
I’ve officially been a law student for four weeks, have read hundreds of pages, made dozens of case briefs, and have survived being cold called. Status: surviving and aiming to thrive!
Property Case Briefs and Ice Cream!
Second week of law school is done! ✅
Weekend to-do list!
Get Packing!
Packing up my entire life today because tomorrow I’m moving and beginning to apartment hunt! Help!
Moving soon!
I have about 15 days left living in my childhood home, and a month and a half left before I move for law school. I’m not going to lie, I am feeling nostalgic these days, but am also looking forward to this new adventure.
Next step!
I’m pretty much done with my law school application journey! I submitted the first deposit to a school I really like and got a response to all schools I applied.
Final stats: 4 acceptances, 4 wait lists, and 2 rejections.
Honestly I was not expecting to get wait listed at 3 of my reach schools, so that was a pleasant surprise. Nevertheless, I’m realistic about what being on the wait list entails and am really happy with the school I submitted my deposit to. Now, I have to begin preparing to move to the continental U.S. in order to begin my journey as a 1L.
i mean this in the nicest way possible you guys but you NEED to take better care of yourselves online. getting severely anxious about mass quantities of horrible things you cant change every single day is normal considering the internet’s ability to educate on worldwide issues, it shows that you have empathy and that you truly do care. but relentless knowledge of constant suffering on this scale is NOT something humans are psychologically equipped to handle. it’s okay to shut off. it’s okay to just take a break and enjoy yourself for a while in your own localized space
i guess what ppl dont tell u about college is that is a very lonesome period of ur life. and that doesnt mean like u wont have lots of friends or u wont party or whatever but ur going to spend so much time alone. like cooking by yourself and studying n homework and driving and going to classes like……… its just you sometimes. and the trick is to use that time by yourself to relax and understand YOU better and iron out your own wants n wishes instead of wallowing
This is the most accurate thing about university that I have ever heard.
No guys, seriously, you might just be the most sociable and outgoing person, but most of the time it will be just you. It feels lonely at first. How long you feel lonely depends on how long you resist it instead of letting go and enjoying the moments you have to yourself.
Update!
I’ve gotten responses from 6 of the 10 schools I applied to. I have gotten 4 acceptances, including one full tuition scholarship to one of my top choices! I have also gotten a rejection from Yale, (I knew it was a long shot but I had to try lol) and wait-listed in one school.
On Starting Law School & Elle Woods
In Legally Blonde, Elle says the famous words, “what, like it’s hard?”
It’s become some sort of a mantra for female students applying to and starting law school. As kickass as this moment was in the movie, however, there’s something very important to note here.
She says these words in reference to getting into law school, not actually attending law school, which, as you recall, she immediately struggles with.
Getting into law school is deceptively simple. There are no prerequisites. Elle’s undergrad had nothing to do with law, or anything even in the humanities. Her focus was in fashion.
All it takes to get into a law school is to have gone through undergrad and to have taken the LSAT. There is no “passing” score on the LSAT, and you will be able to find a law school that accepts you somewhere in the USA if you have taken it at all. It won’t be a good law school, but it will be a law school.
Getting into a good law school, like Harvard, requires a good GPA and LSAT score. If you have a 3.9 GPA and 175+ LSAT, you’re almost guaranteed to get into Harvard Law.
I will not downplay what an impressive feat this is, but you still need to realize that both a high undergrad GPA and a high LSAT score are things that to some, come easily. We all know those kids in college who got straight A’s without trying, and kids who did well on standardized tests (like the SAT) without really trying.
Elle had a 4.0 GPA (so yes, she’s smart), and yes she struggled with increasing her LSAT practice score but she still got a 179 (a score I actually never heard of in real life) on the first try. Meaning, she’s a great test taker.
This has very little to do with how one feels while in law school.
At most law schools, you do not have any exams until the finals. Instead you are expected to only keep taking in information, without being tested on them in any formal manner, and you need to do this in ridiculous volume and speed. You need to be reading cases for 4, 5 classes that all meet nearly everyday, and retaining all this information. It’s not easy. It’s not designed to be easy.
The film made this as clear as it could. Elle’s struggles with getting into Harvard were not even half the battle. It was a cute, fun montage of her studying for the LSAT and putting together a video essay. Once law school starts, she initially crashes and burns, in more ways than one. And then she realizes she really needs to get her shit together.
It can be very discouraging for these hopeful Elle Woodses to start law school and then realize how difficult it is in comparison to everything they’ve done before. But it’s important to remember that their heroine, Elle Woods, struggled, too. You can do it. You can get through it. Just remember:
I’ve found that luck is quite predictable. If you want more luck, take more chances, be more active, show up more often.
How to Get a 4.0 Law School GPA
Hello! Below are 5 tips for maintaining a good gpa in US law school. This is what has worked for me for the last year and a half in my doctrinal classes.* My friend used some of these tips and she said it really helped her improve her gpa.
*This post doesn’t cover legal research and writing
1. Get outlines and past exams for all your doctrinal courses before classes begin. Get outlines from people who got an A in the class and skim them before the first day of class. Typically, I read past exams for the class before the first day of class as well to get an overall picture. I have never outlined once since school started. Usually before each class, I will read the relevant section of the outline to get a picture of what we will be covering and in class, I will follow along on the outline I have open, adding anything the professor says that I think might be important in a different color or using the “track changes” option in Word. During reading period, I will write a condensed version of the outline by hand once.
2. Don’t read. This is very controversial advice, but reading is a form of passive studying and the way I’ve maintaining a high GPA in law school has been to ramp up my active study methods. If you have a good outline and have access to case summaries, then that is all you need to pass a cold call. Instead, the time I would have spent reading, I spend reviewing my outline, creating my attack sheet, and most importantly, doing practice exams.
3. Pay attention in class. It is a lot easier to follow along with the professor when you have a good outline and will know what sorts of things to listen for. In class, I generally write down hypos and also pay attention to what the professor is highlighting because it will provide insight into what kind of answer the professor is looking for in the final. As my friend said: Exams in law school are not based on whether you’ve learned the information, but whether you are presenting the information the way the professor wants it presented.
4. Use supplements. I am a big fan of the E&E series, Siegel’s, and the Q&A series. I particularly like these supplements because of all the practice questions they have in them. If your professor has a particular supplement s/he likes, then definitely use that one because it will present the law in line with your professor. Typically, I start doing practice exams and practice problems one month into the new semester to get a grasp on what I have and have not understood. By doing problems so early in the semester, I have given myself ample time to learn what I do not yet understand.
5. Treat law school like a 9-5 job. Monday through Saturday, I wake up at 8AM and begin studying at 10AM. I will take an hour for lunch and occasional breaks throughout the day, but I do not watch TV or read a book until my “law school day” has ended, which is typically 8PM. After 8, I close all law related materials and wind down for the day watching netflix or reading a book. Especially as a 1L, law school was a full time job. Now, as a 2L, though the pressure of grades is less, I have found this routine to improve my productively dramatically, so will continue studying in this manner until I graduate. I find that it also prepares you for having good work ethic in the work force.
If there are any tips you’d like me to elaborate on, let me know! My asks are always open, I will respond on Sundays. Instagram
5.11.18 i slept in today, but now it’s time for a whole day of studying. and as you can see i wasted three minutes on taking these pictures 😅
