It gets harder as you go but hopefully thereās fun to be had in the frustration :)
Howl removing his heart took away his compacity to love right? Supposedly. Wouldnāt his sister have noticed him being different with her kids? Would a man without the ability to love take in an orphan off the street & make him his apprentice? This leads me to two theories, either:
1. Howl only lost the ability to fall in romantic love.
Or
2. Heās just naturally extremely caring in his own annoying sort of way & once he got his heart back he became unbearably affectionate towards his loved ones.
Howl:
Also Howl:
sir THATāS LOVE (also one of the softest scenes in the book)
I think about this a lot! And I think what dwj had in mind was something similar to tacroy in Lives of Christopher Chant: tacroy is not in possession of his soul, the dright owns it (and thusly him), and can use that possession to force tacroy to bend to his will. Tacroy still has a conscience- he KNOWS working for the wraith is wrong! And he can still love, because he falls in love with rosalie! And tacroy DOES use it as an excuse to justify his behavior, much like howl playing at love with all the girls in market chipping.
Tacroy says isnāt his own man until he gets his soul back, and only then can he truly offer himself to rosalie - not bc he couldnāt love her without it, but because he couldnāt offer her HIMSELF, all of himself, his love and loyalty as a whole. He couldnāt chose to be with her freely, because without his soul, the dright could use rosalie to manipulate him further.
and so with howl, he can clealy love without his heart - the scene with Mari proves it! The only thing he canāt do is to be able to give himself entirely to a woman he loves, because as long as calcifer has his heart, itās not howlās to offer. So instead howl woos young ladies with his fanciful looks, and guitar playing, and charming courting behavior. Because his looks and charm are all he has left to woo with. And it takes sophie to get to the depth of who howl is and really see him - not his superficial image - before she can handle his heart and give it back to him.
āThe only thing he canāt do is to be able to give himself entirely to a woman he loves, because as long as calcifer has his heart, itās not howlās to offer⦠And it takes sophie to get to the depth of who howl is and really see him - not his superficial image - before she can handle his heart and give it back to him.ā
I mean!!!! Thereās a reason half of HMC focuses on the howl pendragon rumor mill!! Sophie hears SO MANY differing accounts of howl - Michaelās rumors, Howlās own obfuscations about himself, Mrs Pentstemmonās view of him, Meganās opinion vs Mari and Neilās.
Howl has broken himself into pieces and given them all away, bits of himself to his teacher, another bit to his family, another part to the witch of the waste, another to calcifer, just the way the witch has taken pieces of justin and suliman to create the perfect man.
And howl has made such a puzzle of himself that even he canāt put himself back together. and sophieās work in HMC is to sort out whatās really howl from whatās a contrived persona. Maybe itās even another way to protect himself, both magically (from the spell) and on a deeply personallevel. If no one can figure him out, then he stands no danger of being known for who he really is, and so he remains safe from being being seen and found lacking.
Howl has to put himsel back together in order to be a whole person, but he canāt do it!! He canāt love truly because he is not true to himself! And for as long as that holds true, no love he can give is anything but a mirrored reflection of the otherās attraction.
Itās like the saying, you canāt love anyone else until you love yourself. And howl canāt find a way to love himself until sophie sees who he truly is, and loves him for all of it, all the bad and good combined: the whole person. And through her love for him, howl can see himself clearly enough to finally be able to love himself - and only when he can accept himself can howl love sophie, too.
I just think about howl a lot.

I think a surprising amount of writers donāt realize that tragedies are supposed to be cathartic. Theyāre intended to result in a purging of emotion, a luxurious cry; the sorrow caused by a great tragedy is akin to fear caused by a good horror movie ā itās aĀ āsafeā sorrow, one that is actually satisfying to the audience. It can still be beautiful! Itās isnāt supposed to just be salting the earth so nothing can grow.
But thatās how you get grimdark: writers who donāt realize that theyāre supposed to be doing something with the audience instead of to the audience.
#i once heard a lecture where someone said that the great appeal of tragedy is to see terrible things happen to people youāre supposed to#empathize with and see yourself in#and that the catharsis comes from seeing someoneās life go horribly wrong and still have the author hold your hand and tell you#āthis story mattered. even though it had a sad ending it still mattered. even if you donāt succeed your attempts matterā#grimdark tells you that the world sucks and nothing you do matters#well-written tragedy tells you that sometimes the world sucks but everything you do matters so so much#your story is still worth telling even if you never achieve that happy ending#or if you lose it along the way#people have inherent value and their stories deserve to be told no matter if they turn out okay or not#and in a reality that has no concept of āfairā that shit just hits good man!!! feels good!!!!! itās COMFORTING

the whole quote thoā¦
āOf course I have. Iām an actor for f*ckās sake. Iāve played with everything and everyone. I love the form and the physicality, but now that Iām in my thirties, it doesnāt do it for me. Iām done experimenting but thereās plenty of stuff in a relationship with another man, especially gay men, that I need in my life. A lot of gay men get my thing for shoes. I have definite feminine qualities and a lot of gay men are incredibly masculine. A lot of people say I seem masculine, but I donāt feel it. I feel intrinsically feminine. Iād love to be one of the boys but I always felt a bit on the outside. Maybe my masculine qualities come from overcompensating because Iām not one of the boys.ā
