Yinz do realize that the reason tumblr is doing age verification for the UK and Brazil is that they'll be fined into the sun if they don't. I think it's very reasonable to use this as an opportunity to get on the site's ass about the (let us quite generously say) non-functional mature content filter, but I don't really think it's fair to say 'hey tumblr the only ethical thing to do is to break several laws'.
The blame here rests with the governments of the UK and Brazil. Probably a lot of other places soon. If we hate this, and I certainly do, that's the right lever to pull.
Also, wrt the 'third party verification' thing. How much faith do you have in the tumblr devs to make a functional and secure age verification system. Be honest.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but this is going to be one of the great political fights of our lives. These bans are broadly popular, across both right and left (for different reasons) in many, many different countries. I've been doing a lot of research on the topic because it's happening in my country too. If we're going to make the case against them, we need to know why people are making these arguments, why they're making them, and how to push back against each argument specifically. The responsible parties here are 100% not the websites. The websites do not want to be doing this. It is against their interests to be doing this. They want as many users as they can get, and it's a huge logistical headache for them that governments are making that harder. You can complain to them all you like and it won't do a damn thing. This is something that every citizen of every country needs to fight for in their country specifically.
I fully support banning social media before a certain age due to the effect it has on children’s mental health.
However, there has to be a more effective way to rollout and mandate age verification. Governments need to consider that without reasonable solutions and an assurance of privacy, people will resort to finding ways around age verification, defeating the entire purpose of these laws.
