Vet: (started typing) "Patient is unable to serve due to species-related limitations including inability to speak, read, or comprehend legal proceedings." Me: Perfect. Sent it in. Got another rejection. "Summons is mandatory. Failure to appear will result in contempt of court." My roommate thought this was hilarious. Roommate: Felix is going to jail. Me: This is serious. Roommate: Bring him to court. See what happens. Decided that was actually the only option left. Day of jury duty, put Felix in his carrier. Brought the entire paper trail of rejection letters. Checked in at the courthouse. Clerk: Name? Me: Felix Martinez. Clerk: (looked at the cat carrier) Is that Felix? Me: Yes. Clerk: (long stare) He's a cat. Me: I've been saying that for six weeks. Clerk: Why didn't you file an exemption? Me: I filed three. All rejected. Showed her the letters. She read through them, expression shifting from confusion to disbelief. Clerk: Someone rejected the veterinary documentation? Me: Twice. Clerk: (called her supervisor over) You need to see this. Supervisor read everything. Looked at Felix. Looked at me. I am a bit embarrassed that it took me so long to put all this together, unfortunately I had developed a lot of learned shame around the topic of asking for money. Basically my primary frustration with a lot of mainstream left-ish framings of trans issues is the treatment of trans rights as a concession they're making to be nice, rather than a principled stance grounded in a real, material understanding of the world.

The transandrodork use of the word "terf" and "tirf" is actually fascinating because they use it in a completely different way than what terf actually means. Like their usage genuinely makes no sense. They're calling trans women talking about how they suffer under transmisogyny "terf" and that's contradictory. A terf is a specific thing. A terf doesn't think transmisogyny is real, hell a terf hardly thinks of trans women as human. It just doesn't make any sense.

It really does flashbacks to the various years of these types of people doing all the weird shenanigans like "don't call them terfs call them farts!" or how they'd call an average dude being transphobic a "terf" and people would point out that the guy is anti-feminist. These are those people who never understood what terf meant in the first place, these are the people who never understood the violence and bigotry terf ideology spreads, these are the people who don't actually know the feminist history that lead to the development of terf ideology.

These people just know terf is a mean, bad thing and if I think people are mean and bad then that's a terf! Hence them calling transfeminists they don't like terfs.

The funny little addition to this is when they call a trans woman a baeddel and a terf in the same post or chain of posts. Because since they're so scared of the defunct baeddel ideology, but don't actually know anything about it, they think it's another "bad and mean to me" word. But baeddels and terfs have completely different ideologies that are extremely at odds with each other. And when that occurrence of getting called both happens, you can kinda just disregard everything they said cuz they just admitted they don't know anything.

I really can and will blame the 9-5 for everything. "We're in a loneliness epidemic" well, we have to spend a third of our day interacting with people in a professional way that makes forming real friendships difficult and then we're peopled out by the time we're done. "People are eating more and more unhealthily" people have to spend more than a third of their day doing work related tasks and they don't want to spend their tiny amount of free time making food. "People aren't involved in their local communities" after spending more than a third of their day doing work related things people are tired and also all those community events take place during normal working hours. "People need to get more hobbies" after spending more than a third of their day working, people are TIRED and don't want to do anything that takes yet more energy. "Literacy is dying" to maintain your critical thinking skills you need to read/watch things that make you think and after spending more than a third of your day doing work related stuff you are TIRED and don't want to expend even more brainnpower. "People need to get outside more" People. Are. TIRED. Because they have to spend all of their time working or preparing for work or recovering from work or doing all the chores they couldn't stay on top of because of work. I can blame fucking anything on having to work, it is truly the root of all fucking evil.

No. Because the alternatives to animal testing are "no testing" and "human testing." Human testing just means people will be subjected to that stuff, and because no one would do that for free, it'll be poor people who need the cash. No testing means procedures, products, and drugs will enter the market without an accurate understanding how they work, meaning the first few hundred people to try it will be the testing.

Animal testing sucks. But it's a whole lot better than the alternatives.

also like. animal testing also has ethics constraints. you don't just jump straight from "new idea for a drug" to "try it on animals", there are medical review boards to make sure you're actually doing scientific tests instead of torturing animals

believe it or not scientists have also had the same worries about animals enduring excessive suffering and put in safeguards to prevent that
