starting my yearly Christmas Carol hyper analysis bullshit but something I think is very funny and also isn’t brought up enough is that Scrooge is sick as fuck during the events of the book.

He’s not eating the gruel because it’s his favorite thing. He actually goes to dinner at a pub before he goes home. The gruel is because he’s sick. It’s medicinal gruel.

A small fire in the grate; spoon and basin ready; and the little saucepan of gruel (Scrooge had a cold in his head) upon the hob.

Scrooge has a nasty cold during the entire story and that makes things ten times funnier.

You’re sick as fuck with a cold and then your dead friend shows up and yells at you. I’d want to go to sleep too.

It's too bad that the adaptations never lean into this.

I think the only movie version that does is the 1935 Seymour Hicks version – Hicks's Scrooge coughs and sneezes here and there throughout the early scenes, although it stops once the ghosts arrive. In one funny moment in the counting-house, he lets out a nasty cough mid-sentence while arguing that Bob Cratchit shouldn't be bothered by the chill in the room because it doesn't bother him and he's a much older man – effectively undermining his own point.

This might also create some ambiguity about whether the ghosts' visits are just a fever dream or not.

Oh yes! Bob has a cold and is always sneezing in that version because of how chilly his office is, and then Scrooge starts sneezing too when he gets home and mutters "Damn that Cratchit!"
