One Wisconsin City Beat Back a Data Center. Now Residents Are Helping Others Do the Same.

When a secretive $1.6 billion data center proposal landed in Menomonie with almost no warning, residents had weeks to fight back. They won —

Residents had serious concerns about the project. While companies often win major tax breaks by promising jobs and economic stimulation, data centers bring few permanent jobs and can drain municipal water resources, drive up electric bills, rob cities of tax revenues, and cause damaging noise, light, and air pollution. Already, Wisconsin residents have seen some of these impacts at data center sites in Port Washington and Beaver Dam. Residents in Port Washington have complained about the disruption caused by around-the-clock construction at the new data center. Families near the construction in Beaver Dam have reported that their wells have run dry.

Although the Menomonie City Council voted to annex and rezone the land for the data center in early September [2025], pressure from local campaigners was so great that Mayor Randy Knaack announced at a Sept. 22 city council meeting that he had notified Balloonist that the city would not be moving forward with a development agreement. More good news came in January when the Menomonie City Council voted unanimously to place additional regulations on data center projects.

This comes after the city experienced major push back from a proposed data center last year.

This new ordinance will reclassify data centers and other similar large businesses. Menomonie mayor Randy Knaack says it will allow the city to institute strict guidelines. He says it puts the city on an even playing field with big businesses. “The new zoning will have some perspective on certain issues. It might be water use, it could be height of the building, noise, electricity usage. Those kinds of parameters with the new zoning. So, the city of Menomonie will actually have a better opportunity to bargain, or make things better if things move forward,” said Knaack.

what I fucking love is how tvl was written in the 80s and lestat is constantly sayinf shit like “as the kids say 🤪 that’s so rad!!” or whatever, and to me, reader of the vampire lestat in this modern age, that does NOT register the way anne rice intended it.

like it is supposed to feel jarring and insane. it is supposed to feel like lestat has been violently submerged in modern young people trends and culture and is now repeating all the new words he learned like a beautiful fresh baby. but because the book is from 1985, all I think is oh interesting huh I didn’t know that slang term even originated in the 80s how vintage how retro how lestat wow he’s so embarrassing aw aw so cute.

but amc in all their incredible genius decided that honoring anne rice’s original vision of writing an extremely modern and weird book that fully embodied the era it was written in was more important then bringing back the 80s nostalgia thing that streaming services love and it’s incredible to me. now I get to listen to lestat say shit like “labubu FOMO cosplay reddit discord Gen Z more like gen SNOOZE 🤪🤪🤪 safe space pronouns donald trump labubu tiktok dance 🕺🏻” and suddenly I understand what it felt like to be a young anne rice reader in 1985. That’s such a weird thing to say and a weird account. No proships and profic isn’t good to be, I can just imagine the level of fucked up brain you have and I wanna tell you it deserves jail and most of all hell, imagine if you get kids ? This is some puritan “there is nothing but the surface level thoughts in your mind” cult programming going on.

This is the kind of shit that keeps people from developing a healthy relationship with their own mind, this “if you think something evil you are evil”, or “evil thought equals evil action”.

This is the thing that has people flip “well, if I’m evil I might as well act evil”.

Most people are perfectly capable of developing a separation between their thoughts and “wouldn’t it be fun/what if” scenarios or enjoying dark topics in a fictional setting but recoil at the idea of it happening in real life.

But then there’s people who were never taught the difference between inside thoughts and outside thoughts. Like dudes getting weird about their girlfriend living with her stepbrother, because these dudes cannot differentiate between the fantasy of porn and reality. And the solution isn’t to ban every offensive material, because that material comes from ideas people have, so you cannot outlaw people thinking, you can only teach people about the healthy boundary between fantasies and reality.

Thinking that a lack of censorship and the access to violent/immoral/sexual themes is the issue perpetuates the base idea: bad thoughts make a bad person, which does not create a moral framework for people to follow in their actions.

It kills any idea of behaving morally based on empathic and cognitive process because it eliminates every thought process in the beginning, when the thought is being labeled as ‘bad’. Because bad thoughts aren’t allowed, they make a bad person. It doesn’t allow for ‘why (do I have this thought)’ or any analysis of ‘how’ it may be harmful (a contained fantasy doesn’t harm others per se), ‘if’ it may become harmful, and all the other little thoughts that have adjusted and educated people come to the conclusion that a dead dove fic is not harmful in and of itself. That it does not mean the person writing or reading it would act in that way in real life.

I’ve read (and written) nasty shit I would not enjoy happening in real life.

And there’s also a good tangent going into consent here, but I’ve been rambling enough already.
