The Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens was founded in 1912 as the Farm Colony of Brooklyn State Hospital, and was deinstitutionalized between the 1960's and 1980's. At its height, it housed more than 7,000 patients; nowadays, there are only a few hundred patients (in outpatient treatment centers). And as a result, several parts of the hospital have become abandoned. Here are several bone chilling pictures from it's closure.
Central Islip’s former State Hospital grounds are an amazing place to find hidden ruins. In spite of the facility shutting its doors in 1996, undergoing heavy redevelopment and major demolition, there are still a lot of historic holdouts to be found by the eye of the eager historian. I have spent the past 7 years searching for these remains and will now give you a tour.
Chandler’s estate aka Satan’s Trails A Brief History: Chandler Estate, also known as Satan’s Trails is located in Mount Sinai, New York. Chandler Estate was originally a waterfront resort that overlooked Mt. Sinai Harbor. During the 1950s, actress Marilyn Monroe, and playwright Arthur Miller stayed there. Eventually the property changed from being a resort to an apartment complex. After the complex closed it sustained fire damage and was demolished. Currently it is a mixture an overgrown field with some foundations and woods. Haunted History: Chandler Estate is rumored to be part of various cult activity, as well as host to claims of the paranormal. Among the rumors is a claim that satanic worshipers attempt to contact something nicknamed “the Whacker.” Some people claim to have encountered the spirit of Marilyn Monroe. Other people claim that Mary from the “Mary legends” once lived on the property. People report feelings of unease, and that something watches them while they are on the property. This undated image shows the exterior of a World War II-era observation tower on Great Gull Island. The island, east of Plum Island, became a coastal defense fortification in 1896. Fort Michie was built on Great Gull Island in 1900 and served as a World War II harbor defense site. It consisted of two 12-inch and two 10-inch coastal artillery guns on "disappearing carriages" and various batteries, according to the New York State Military Museum. The fort was an active site for the U.S. Army until 1949, according to Manhattan's American Museum of Natural History, which acquired the property that year. The Upper West Side museum prepared Great Gull Island for tern colonization. The island has become the largest colony of common terns in the world and the largest colony of endangered roseate terns in the Western Hemisphere. if you live in suffolk county you know lake ronkonkama, a wonderful lake that holds a tragic past of the ancient indian princess named ronkonkama who commited suicide while canoeing on the lake. Local legend has it that princess ronkonkama now drags one man into the lake every year. At least one person has drowned each year in Lake Ronkonkoma since the incident, most of them male. Many others have reported being drawn by some unseen force out to the center of the lake, almost as if something was trying to drag them in.
