Hmm, that's a good question— and one I sadly don't have the answer to myself. Hopefully the fandom does though! My best guess though is that it's (at least for most people) nothing to do with the grammatical gender of the names, it's just a headcanon for the sake of it being a headcanon to most of the people that choose it for him

I've returned. Major long time no see.

I have quite a lot of headcanons I've fleshed out over the years, plus also planning to return to my culture blog !! BUT !! I will spill some of my headcanons.

Alaska is half-deaf, and growing up she had just adapted to it. Honestly, she doesn't pay as much mind to it anymore. (yes, I still preach about trans woman Alaska.)

Penn is a Schizoid Narcissist (SzPD + NPD) and I don't wanna exactly explain in depth as to WHY... and if anyone uses this in bad faith (looking at the 'abuser penn' people) I will hunt you down like genuinely because I cannot take the concept of "narc abuse" or "abusive penn" once again. This is more of a projection of myself onto him and honestly I feel like he'd at least be one.

New York and New Jersey have to deal with Penn's shit all the time. Average brother things. They all hate each other but man they all love their kanienkehaka mother collectively.

Idaho and Oregon. Gods I love these two. But they definitely go on more.. nature walks as dates rather than just those stereotypical restaurants.

^ They are very much happily married, and they honestly are sappy. Sappiest couple oat.

New Jersey is a cryptid. Yea, seems basic but I love just implementing more features outside of the tail, horns, wings shit. I like giving him HOOVES.

Call me cruel, but personally I think it's very "interesting" we collectively as a fandom a year or two ago agreed that Hetalia is very bad and we all did not enjoy being associated with it and now we appear to have completely gone back on this and now a big chunk of the fandom really likes Hetalia again and we are being integrated with Hetalia once more. 🌾🍄

I don't ship California with anyone, his ass is full aroace because I don't think he's ever been interested in anybody like that for a good 99% of his life. I genuinely don't think he could handle living with somebody else and have a relationship like that, I think that his temper would be a little too short for a long term relationship. Like yea he's still capable of being a good partner, It's just that his fuse may or may not be a little short when he's around someone else 24/7

but yea I think when Florida moves in with Cal, he'd get kicked out in under a week. Florida and California getting paired together in a house would end horribly.

yea sure there's the statehouse but nobody's in there, ever. Everybody clashes too much to be around each other all the damn time 😭

new york is 'punk' in the way KISS is 'punk'. he is 'punk' in the way glenn danzig is 'punk', just not as much as danzig shows.

new york dresses punk, he may have even had a few punk beliefs, but he is not punk. ny would not say acab/1312, he would not say nazi punks fuck off, he would not say no trump no kkk no fascist usa or whatever you can think of. ny is a personification of the ny government in some way, he can not be punk because he would favour the bourgeoisie/rich and powerful/1% instead of the proletariat/poor/everyone else. he can dress punk and listen to punk or whatever, but he would not be punk.

Anyways, I'm kinda losing it over how people characterize Florida. I know art is up to interpretation and such, and Florida being "dumb" is shown a lot throughout the show but like

Idk it feels kinda obvious to me that it's not that simple? Florida canonically put a rocket into space (even though it was ignore by everyone else), he memorized statistics and definitions of laws, AND he corrected Gov on the Constitution. Could a "dumb" person do that? No. And that's just whats off the top of my head. He's incredibly smart, he just uses that intelligence for chaos, and he pretends to be stupid in certain contexts to fuck with people and cause more chaos.

If people prefer to take it at face-value I'm not gonna argue, it's up to yall but. It's frustrating not seeing much content of him in the way I see him....... Sighhhh time to start writing myself ig

I'm personally a big fan of portraying florida as very clever (in certain ways) and downplays his own intelligence to mess with people. I love that there's a variety of interpretations, though!
