So it’s 2020 can we talk about how Avatar portrays femininity as well as just gender in general?  You have Katara, Toph, Suki, and like 800 other amazing female characters who are out here being warriors and making a point that women can be incredible fighters too, and there’s an episode that addresses this explicitly where Katara duels Pakku and basically explodes his reductive view of women (best scene in the whole thing is when everyone carts her in to apologize to him.) And there’s a lot about women being encouraged to take part in traditionally masculine spaces, particularly again with Toph and Katara. Katara is great too because the show doesn’t draw a dichotomy between a fighter and a healer. Katara can be gentle and motherly and a good shoulder to cry on, while also being a hundred percent badass. 

But then also the show is really good (albeit a bit subtler) about the value in men embracing traditionally feminine traits and activities.  Our main character is pacifist vegetarian soft-boi who wears flower crowns and makes jewelry and spends a lot of time talking about his feelings and he is by and far the most morally sound character in the series who is completely at ease with who he is. 

Then you have Sokka who a lot of people have pointed out has an arc that’s basically “chug respect women juice,” and part of that arc includes him wearing the Kiyoshi uniform, something he feels emasculates him, (and which the show makes a joke about tbf) but then they turn it around and make the ensemble genuinely badass. 

And then sweet Zuko who is absolutely someone who is portrayed as caring and sensitive in his childhood (by no small part due to his mother’s influence) who is raised in probably the most toxically masculine environment in the show. The Fire Nation might have women in its ranks, but feminine traits like compassion, mercy, and basically any emotion that isn’t a desire for destruction are seen as disgraceful. It’s notable what gets Zuko banished is his refusal to fight his own father, and how that is labeled disrespectful. 

It’s also notable that the people and places that change Zuko are more feminine in nature. He works in a shop, cleaning and preparing tea. He meets two young women who drastically change his view on Earth Kingdom civilians. He spends time helping a family with children. And through all this he’s there with Iroh, a guy who enjoys music, culture, and natural beauty, who’s sensitive and dedicated to humble acts of kindness for others, and who Ozai dismisses as an embarassing failure. 

And the show ends with Zuko ditching all this toxicity and just being the guy he wants to be. He even hugs Aang at the end, something Season 1 Zuko would never do with anybody. Our boy hugs!

Like the show doesn’t just empower women by letting them fight, it also shows the power and value in emotional vulnerability and compassion that is usually only reserved for women. It empowers women to fight and kick ass while also deconstructing toxic masculinity. 

Tl:dr: Avatar says let women fight, and let men be emotionally open with each other and hug!

I was re-watching possession and kinda wondered what happened after the big battle at the end, (mainly with Lloyd) After barely being able to walk, to having to fight Morro (again) and also watching his dad die for like the third time- his adrenaline probably crashed pretty hard

Long story short I just wanted an excuse to draw hurt comfort (comfort? Idk man I guess not being possessed would be pretty comforting)

Smth I noticed when rewatching rtte is that Hiccup almost always knows what to say to ppl?? Like when Snotlout is feeling insecure abt is place on the team, Hiccup is the first to suggest smth to bring back his confidence and his also the one reassuring him. When Fishlegs is feeling nervous abt leadership and stuff, Hiccup is the one that reassures him? He’s also the one that supports the twins when no one else does, when Astrid is ready to go crazy, he’s the one to reel her in and calm her down? He is always the one talking to ppl when they need support and he is almost always the only one checking up with ppl. I love Snotlouts character development and I love how much of a role Hiccup plays in said development. 

While this is rlly sweet, it’s also kinda sad bc he probs developed this behavior from being the black sheep his whole life. No one paid attention to him, so he just observed. He probs uses what he observed along with his own experiences to help ppl the best they can. It’s pretty common throughout the show that when someone is having problems, Hiccup his there to help them through it and Hiccup is the one to fill in the rest of the team in what’s going on. 

He also seems rlly good a reading ppl to. I headcannon it’s bc he spent most of his life observing stuff, so naturally, he’s rlly, rlly good at reading ppl and detecting when they’re sad, angry, annoyed, etc. he’s not so good with positive emotions bc no one really displayed it to him until Toothless. This is proven in the ep “Turn and Burn” where Spitelout builds that storehouse and they have to fend off the Singetail. Bc of Hiccups ability to read ppl, he got his dad to go back and save Spitelout and Snotlouts life.

Y’all know that not all Cubans are dark right ?? Cuban families tend to originate from all over. A lot come from Spain but some come from Africa and South America and some even from Europe (Spain is in Europe just so y’all know…). Cubans don’t have a “set skin tone”. They’re not all tan.

Quite frankly, I think the reason everyone expects all Cubans to be tan is because that’s the kind of skin tone we imagine when we think of Mexicans. And honestly? I’ve learned as I grow up that there’s a LOT of people who think all Hispanics look like Mexicans or are Mexican.

Lets be real, this is what most people think of when they hear a character or someone is Hispanic, despite wether they’re Cuban or Peruvian or Colombian or whatever.

Most people hear Hispanic and automatically think of Mexican. People automatically assume that if someone’s Hispanic, their skin tone is going to look very similar to Miguel from Pixar’s Coco (who is Mexican) and if living in Miami my whole life has taught me anything it’s that that is far from the truth

This is obviously a very common opinion. Someone took the time to write that comment and then SIX more people within a day of seeing just a post on Instagram liked the comment. I want to express that not a lot of people go into the comment section in general so obviously six doesn’t seem like a lot but that’s just out of the people who viewed the comment. Imagine all the people who thought that or would agree with that comment but they just scrolled by ?? Or all the people that didn’t see the post in general.

Hispanic is a very wide term. There’s all kinds of different people. And Cuban is equally as wide in terms of what the people look like.

Let’s take my own family for instance. I, myself, am very white (I’m only half Cuban). However my sister is significantly tanner than I am. Just naturally. (She’s also half Cuban). My mom, however, is full Cuban. She was born and raised in Cuba just like the rest of her family. She’s as white as I am. Her dad? Darker than Lance. I would say closer to Hunks skin tone. Her mom? On the lighter side but still a bit darker than her. (Her mom also has slight Chinese on her side of the family). Her sisters? Fell closer to as dark as her dad.

My point is, there’s such a wide variety of skin colors when it comes to being Cuban. And to assume that Lance’s family all have to be dark to be considered “actually Cuban” is kind of racist?? As if saying if your white your not actually Cuban. (Something I personally deal with a lot and my mom even more despite that being her homeland).

Bottom line is, I feel like a lot of people are trying to start something they shouldn’t. They want to argue that some of Lance’s family isn’t dark enough to be considered Cuban when they don’t even understand the heritage of Cubans. Don’t start something just bc the creators might be “acting racist” or whatever. Because they’re not. The fact that Lances family is such a wide variety of colors is actually really cool!! And really does a good job of showing just how big of a difference skin tone cane be between Cubans, even within the same family.

Idk maybe I’m overreacting, I probably am, I’m just tired of people trying to make a bigger problem out of something that isn’t a problem to begin with.

Modern AU Astrid would like rollerderby I think. She'd be on a team with Ruff and Heather. She'd be a blocker, along with Heather (you get to shove people) and I feel like Ruff would be a good jammer. The rest of their friends come to cheer them on at matches and even practice sometimes

Another great part of rollerderby is you get to pick a cool name for yourself! Heather literally already has the perfect one, "Heather the Unhinged" goes so unbelievably hard

Astrid would also do kickboxing. On the side. Also for their first date Hiccup takes her axe throwing in an attempt to woo her with something she enjoys. (Totally not so he can stare at her biceps while she throws.. what Totally Not. He's so unbelievably intimidated by her strength; he is head over heels) He thinks it's worth it even if he looks pathetic in comparison (it's okay tho she helps him out)

Anyone else like both Red Paladin Keith and Black Paladin Lance just as much as they like Black Paladin Keith and Red Paladin Lance? 

Black Paladin Keith and Red Paladin Lance is a really interesting dynamic to explore just as much as Black Paladin Lance and Red Paladin Keith are. 

Black Paladin Keith is fun bc it’s forcing Keith to essentially replace Shiro and accept that Shiro is gone which is smth Keith has denied to possible since the beginning of the series. It would force him to face his very obvious fear of abandonment. Shiro is probably the only person that has stayed the longest in Keith life making it exponentially difficult for him to accept cause in my mind when Keith gets attached to someone, it takes a while for him too, but when he does, he gets attached hard. He now has to deal with that but also the burden of being the leader and the responsibility that comes with being the person that makes life or death decisions involving the ppl he cares about the most. This also adds to the pressure. Keith could force himself to be so much like Shiro he loses sense of who he is as a leader, or just flat out ignore his responsibilities in retaliation to prove he’s not cut out for it. 

On Lances side, he’s in Keith’s shadow again. It plays on his insecurities of being useless or just a replacement. He wants to achieve something great, but he always finds himself as a replacement for Keith. He’s been in this position since the Garrison, and has probably felt this way since he was a kid. Having a bunch of possible older siblings always there to do something before you makes it really really hard to do anything for yourself and make a statement to be different. That’s probably why Lance joined the Garrison. Being the Blue Paladin was the only real original thing Lance had. Being the leader gave him a chance to set back his insecurities, but instead, he was rejected and that probably doubled his insecurities. 

For this case, both Keith and Lance can support each other. Lance can help Keith cope with his fear of abandonment, losing Shiro, and new role as leader via emotional support/support as being Keith’s right-hand. Keith can help Lance feel more confident and sure of himself as the new right hand, help him feel like his own person outside of being Keith’s replacement or just another member of his family. It’s an interesting, angsty dynamic to explore. In the process of them healing and trying to help each other there is a lot of room for restless emotions to clash, causes stressful arguments and situations which are always in fun to write. 

Then, with Black Paladin Lance and Red Paladin Keith, it’s a bit less conflicting. Lance gets what he wants, he gets to be a leader, he gets to be like his idol, but maybe he doesn’t feel fully fulfilled. He has everything he wants on paper, but maybe he feels guilty over taking the spot from Keith. Maybe he still doesn’t feel himself worthy of being the leader, despite wanting it so badly. He knows how much Shiro ment to Keith, and by becoming the new Black Paladin, he’s replacing Shiro. He doesn’t feel like he can fit into Shiro’s shoes and tries to avoid Keith over the situation of replacing Shiro. He’s still painted as ‘the dumb one’ or ‘the goofball’ despite being the leader. He doesn’t know how to manage the seriousness without abandoning his personality, but when he keeps said personality, he’s suddenly to childish. So, he just becomes a shell of himself, believing his only value is when he is like that.  

For Keith, Lance becoming the Black Paladin would either force him to stay with Voltron or leave for the blades permanently. In both cases when he comes back as the red Paladin, it’s strange because he wants to believe that nothings changed. He wants it all to go back to normal and be like how it was. But now, it’s not Shiro leading him. It’s a new dynamic. At the start of Lance being the leader, I would assume that Keith would be a bit indiferente about it. He doesn’t want to be the leader and Lance so badly wants too, but seeing someone like Lance who isn’t anything like Shiro—who is the exact opposite of Shiro—take his place would probably be really conflicting. On one hand, he’s glad he doesn’t have to lead. On the other, his still distraught over losing Shiro and would probably accidentally take it out on Lance, hate Lance for replacing Shiro, as Lance replacing Shiro just confirms that Shiro is gone. This all ties back to Keith’s fear of abandonment and not wanting to lose the one person to believe in him. 

In this scenario, Keith and Lance can still help each other. Lance can help Keith with his fear of abandonment and losing the people he loves again. Keith can help Lance by making him feel more confident as his role as a leader and always be there for support as his right hand man. In the process of it all, there are so many conflicting, misread emotions that make great writing fuel. 

Both situations have very interesting, fun, and angsty dynamics to explore, no matter where you swing on the opinions (I’m a bit more on black Paladin Keith cause I love the Keith/Shrio dynamic it has and also all the material it provides to explore lances insecurities)

Then there’s Allura becoming the new black Paladin but that’s a whole other ball park

Strongest kids in the crossroads

Headcannon that Lance is a really good swimmer who swam a lot as a kid cause he grew up in Cuba; he even swum competitively for a bit. So, like most swimmers, he has broad, broad shoulders. 

This is complete opposite compared to Keith who has narrower, smaller shoulders. 

Due to this, Keith can wear just about anything of lances cause they are similar in size, when he wears Lance’s jackets/tops, it’s like two sizes to big on him but Keith loves the bagginess of it. 

Lance, unfortunately, cannot wear any of Keith’s jackets/tops. When he does, he has to stay hunched and can’t rlly move his arms in risk of ripping the fabric ‘cause it’s just too tight around the shoulders. There is one jacket of Keith’s that Lance can wear comfortably, that being an old NASA hoodie Keith stole from Shiro forever ago and never gave back. Keith stole it cause he liked the bagginess.

Anytime I think of Lloyd I think of him having Morro’s green streak in his hair

I headcannon that in the Ninjago world when you get possessed by a ghost based on how long the ghost possesses you, you can start to develop features of the ghost possessing you. Ex: change in hair color, gaining freckles or birth marks that the ghost had, change in eye color, hair length, etc. 

In Lloyd’s case, he was possessed for at least a week if not more 24/7 except for that one time Morro left him to possess Ronin. That’s a HELLA long time to have some dead guy controlling you. Hence Lloyd having a streak of Morro’s hair color in his hair and a an increase in Lloyd’s hair length after the incident. Bc it’s magic, Lloyd can’t dye it out or get rid of it. He tried cutting it off but the hair grew back that color. So yeah, Lloyd with that in his hair. In simpler terms, the Ana Elsa thing from Frozen but with Morro and Lloyd. Kinda like how Lloyd will have the save for the rest of his life.

Lloyd can also see souls and anything tied to death/ghosts now bc of his prolonged exposure to said death magic

I’d like to think that Keith has a lot of tea on the ppl from the Garrison/ppl from his past. He doesn’t go out to seek it, but ppl often forget he’s near or in the same room as him cause he likes to remain as hidden and silent as possible. He’s also really good with picking up body language, lip reading, and just overall observing from spending so much time watching ppl to figure out their motives. On top of that, he also has insane hearing cause of Galra genes, so he was able to pick up a lot of tea without really trying. 

One night, Lance was spilling tea about ppl from the garrison and Keith passively said smth about what he heard/gathered, and suddenly, Keith is now the new source of all tea on the ship. 

There have been a few times that Keith been able to discover someone’s true motive when forming alliances via his observation skills and has saved the Voltron Collation from complete exploitation
