the doctor says her line and Five doesn’t even blink, like of course my welcome is conditional, I wouldn’t expect anything else

feeling like they don’t actually belong anywhere, they just remain with whoever Tolerates them the longest

until Abel Township

they’re not even through the gates and Sam Yao is already telling them to come home

for the first time, they’re running to someone instead of running away

“can’t embarrass yourself if you never talk to anyone ever :)” *feels supremely anxious anyway*

getting to know Sam and the other runners and members of the township while out in the field takes away the pressure of ~being social~ because there’s work to concentrate on

Five becomes known as that silent, stoic, mission-focused runner, except to their closest friends, who know that “actually, I am a Mess”

facing a friendly invite to Abel Township D&D night: “okay, Five, you run around with zombies for your day job, you can do this”

“…. or no you can’t. but you can sit in on sessions and spectate, and that’s close enough, right?” participants are glad to have a cheerleader, albeit a quiet one, and Runner Five is happy to have been included at all. everyone wins

taking on their runner designation as their name makes them feel comfortably anonymous, connected without feeling exposed. it associates them with their purpose at Abel and in post-apocalyptic life
