“you are not immune to propaganda” but specifically cop shows and courtroom dramas that portray acquiring evidence illegally and not executing basic rights as. like. somehow good things? the evil suspect exercising their right to remain silent is always guilty obviously and the valiant cop that broke into someone’s house or hacked into someone’s personal laptop is always the heralded hero of justice. like girl. your humanity.

honestly, i think the trophy room sex scene really encapsulates that rachel reid writes about instutitionalized, systemic bigotry as though it's something that can be solved with personal confidence. this is a running theme throughout all her books but especially game changer and the long game. both shane and scott don't want to come out publicy because they play a full contact sport and are fully aware that a lot of their coworkers are homophobes, and they (quite rationally!) fear not only potential future workplace discrimination, but also straight up physical assault.
however, the narrative frames this as a choice borne not out of reasonable trepidation, but rather as one made from selfish cowardice. kip claims scott is forcing him back into the closet and even asks him what's the worst thing that could happen? about coming out, as if the answer to that isn't blatantly obvious: a hate crime? ilya accuses shane of all sorts of nonsense, from "not choosing him over hockey" to being selfish and naive (because somehow shane simultaneously is very aware of how much would go wrong if he and ilya came out publicly, but also has "no idea about the dark side of hockey". how does this incredible dissonance work? don't worry about it! rachel reid sure didn't! shane is an idiot when she wants him to be and a paranoid hyperaware selfish asshole when she wants that instead).
so like, of course she writes as though shane being upset about workplace harassment and discrimination is something that can be solved by ilya ~fixing~ shane's self-esteem with hot sex. it's the culmination of this entire victim-blamey attitude that systemic problems can be solved by #slaying hard enough and simply not caring what other people say. of course workplace discrimination and harassment will simply stop being an issue if you stop being a vulnerable target and remember that you're awesome, right? right? that's how this works? just don't let them get to you and they'll stop because they'll realize the error of their ways! it's foolproof.
like .. . . ... .. .. . . this strat has already largely been discussed as deeply flawed and often unhelpful re: playground bullying. among children. do we actually, seriously need to establish that "ignore it until it goes away" is not a real solution to institutionalized bigotry? seriously?
Me and pook just got our apartment ahhh
#this is literally how being nonbinary is
Imagine explaining non-binary genders like this though, “Okay so you know how a spork is like a spoon, and also a fork, while also being neither? I am the spork of humanity. I have a spork gender.”
Good things lately🌸
🌈 Found some Black queer events in Toronto to visit during the parade weekend at the end of the month AND they’re focused on Black women specifically. It’s going to be my first Pride because every year I want to go something comes up or holds me back. I’m determined to go and find spaces where queer black women are the core audience and experience something new.
💇🏾♀️ Had my first professional retie since I started my locs last year. This is my second time locing my hair and the first time being my own loctician. My hair and scalp are both very healthy, and the thickness of my locs are even (no thinness in the roots which is a problem some ppl have when they choose self-maintenance).
👩🏾🦱 Getting loc extensions.
🌧️ It’s been raining on and off the last week and the winds are the kind that seem to wash away all your problems when you stand in the street and feel the breeze pass through/around. It’s been soothing to listen to, especially when I’m working from home and can hear the rain and wind whipping around the house.
🎨 Got a solid plan to revive some of my older tattoos before I get back to working on my leg sleeve, and found some good Black women artists to work with since my favourite artist to work with if they’re available once I’m ready to book.
🐈 The orange cat that lurks in my neighbourhood in the spring/summer is back and looking healthy.
🤓 Finally got an optometrist appointment and my new glasses will come in next week. Next up: dentist.
💅🏾 My old nail tech is no longer at the salon but the woman who works at her old table is equally as talented and gentle. My last mani and set was amazing and I will def request her again.
👩🏾💻 Work is going well. It’s unlikely that they’ll extend my contract or take me on full time but the organization is both messy and under a hiring freeze for full time positions, but work has been consistently light and this is the first job where I feel absolutely 0 stress (bc the work is so minimal). Easily the best contract I’ve ever had. I feel content with how it’s going.
🧖🏾♀️ There is a spa retreat in my future. To the hands of a massage therapist my body probably feels like cement. I’m as excited for this as I am for Trinidad & Tobago in the fall.
Follow up:
🌈I really enjoyed pride even tho I ended up being too tired to do some of the more social events. For a first time I got a really good basic experience just seeing the people, the parade, and all the vendors or artists set up.
👩🏾🦱My local extensions went really well and I’m happy with them. I’m having fun actually playing with my locs and not just using them as a convenience like my finest set was when I was younger.
🤓 My eye health is better than I thought! I got the new glasses and I like them a lot. My eyes are’t sore after a work day being on the computer and the frames are very light so they’re super comfortable.
👩🏾💻 Work feels pointless and things are shifting but I’ve been able to use my money for some good things and give back in small ways to people in my life which is a positive. I’m now counting down the days still this contract is over but still grateful to have had employment and that the earnings from this job placement have been a big boost.
🐈 Community cat is still going strong and said hello to me a few days ago.
🧖🏾♀️ I organized a trip for myself to visit another province and it will included a spa day! Never had a full day of any pampering and I’m really excited to get my skin assessed and a massage.
