Since The Magicians really likes to harp on the whole concept of “magic is pain” without the original context of the books, I thought it was important to share this quote:

“Most people carry that pain around inside them their whole lives, until they kill the pain by other means, or until it kills them. But you, my friends, you found another way: a way to use the pain. To burn it as fuel, for light and warmth. You have learned to break the world that has tried to break you.”

“Magic is pain” isn’t about needing to be miserable to do party tricks — it’s about hope. It’s about finding the agency and the motivation to fight against the pain and make something better. And I think that’s something the show has (obviously) lost sight of recently.
