Honestly didn't ever plan to make a post like this, but there's a decent amount now. I'd like to keep track of things in one place for my own reasons. (This is really meant mostly just for me, but I don't mind if others find this useful.)
I will periodically update this when I remember.

Oh my goodness, PLEASE let's talk about GL archetypes as they differ from and draw on BL uke/seme archetypes!
I really think GL could be VERY fertile ground for trope subversion, for exploration, and for genre experimentation simply because... well, it's much more subjective and based on character vibes! The sexually active character and the sexually passive character can switch multiple times in the same scene in GL, which differs from the visual cues of the way sex is portrayed in BL and the emphasis on sexual positioning. The classic 'chased and chaser' categories still apply in GL, but they don't map as directly onto BL's formula of 'the big masc one pursues and the small femme one resists'. (Especially since the world of GL is still reluctant to commit to portraying butches whole-heartedly and as mains, but that's a whole different issue 🙃)
Put bluntly, the emphasis on sexual penetration is gone - at least the way I see it - but sometimes I think GL stories do a lot of work to still cast those archetypal top/bottom roles just for the sake of genre convention, even if they're both pretty, thin women. It's fascinating. What do you think?
Yes!!! Hard agree! I think at the heart of the seme/uke dynamic can be a pretty heteronormative structure. The big masc should be active and the small effeminate should be passive—and that absolutely fits some people’s real life prerogatives and experiences. And we get some really interesting subversions of that within BL, and the very fact of having boys and men in the femme role with subjectivity is already a HUGE subversion of patriarchal standards.
I’m no expert on GL at all, so grain of salt and feel free to correct and add on, but with the women, it can feel a bit less subversive to use that same script and have one character be the damsel in distress or whatever. Gmmtv, and maybe some of the other gl-makers, seem like they’re experimenting a bit with it. Pluto and, as I mentioned, 23.5 flipped the script in one way: the taller and more butch character being the protagonist who’s shy and learning to be pursued and loved. That gender dynamic lines up with how BL tends to center the experience of the partner who least ascribes to gender expectations, seeing that plight as more narratively important than the character whose affection is the only thing that might define them as ‘different.’ Then JanJingJing have a much more versatile dynamic to their characters and ship. I am still waiting on Singha’s eventual GL to save us, but Shades which is airing right now is doing all the right sapphic things for me—more variety of personalities in the characters, with some very bold unapologetic girls; contrasting themes between ‘proper’ and ‘pure’ morality with drives for autonomy and rebellion; styling that can be messy and/or androgynous; intense friendships and girl grouping; horniness. These all seem like integral elements to the wlw experience from my perspective. And, like with BL, realistic representation doesn’t have to be the goal. Fairytales about wlw can be important, too. However, women being cast into the already feminine worlds of fairytales and soap operas is less disruptive to gender norms than women elbowing their way into realism and grit and…hopefully soon action…especially when they get there and don’t remain single (which is the trend for women in these genres in the West) but instead still demand that they deserve love.
Thank you for this answer! I'm excited about this topic - and no expert in GL either, I don't have nearly as many as I would like on my watched list yet. But the emerging patterns fascinate me for sure.
I think you're onto something with the theory developing here... as thin and blurry as the lines between 'femme' and 'just barely slightly less femme' are in most GLs, the idea that the one who conforms less to gender roles is the one being pursued is evident in a lot of them. I'll have to see, as my watched GLs list grows, if the pattern holds. Affair is one that would seem to buck this trend.
It's also a very good point that realism doesn't have to be the goal - heck, princess GLs are emerging as a subgenre. But! I agree that I'm hopeful the genre will continue to venture into the territories mentioned, like androgyny, autonomy and rebellion, alternate definitions of queerness (nb sapphics and trans girls deserve romance too! the teacher subplot in 23.5 was so important to me!) and [probably the least likely]... fat queers. (Silvy is amazing and deserves all the roles and accolades, but Silvy should not be the end of the list.)
What I think writers struggle with is that it's not a simple binary, right? BL stories often include some rejection of patriarchal values or toxic masculinity as the characters grow and become who they are meant to be. But... is toxic femininity even a thing to identify and rebel against? Instead, it's kind of just a different expression of the same ideology. Existence as a wlw or a mlm is a subversion of the patriarchy/gender norms, but the perspective shifts drastically along lines of status, societal recognition, and power. Which, I think, is why men in GLs are often The Worst™️ and mostly there to cause problems... but we saw this with The Woman Character™️ in early BLs, too.
Am I making any sense? Sorry if this is just a ramble... it's an exciting topic, and I'm grateful for the chance to yap about it. Thank you again!

Bambi accidentally learns that Prim is planning to propose, and she tries to pretend not to know, but gets too excited and gives herself away. In response, Prim takes Bambi on a romantic trip - two whole weeks away, which Min approves and helps her schedule - and at almost every moment, Bambi expects Prim to get on one knee... but she doesn't. Bambi is almost disappointed when the trip ends, and they pack up to fly back... only for Prim to drive to her family home, where both their families are waiting, candles lit, roses everywhere, soft music, for Prim's quiet, heartfelt proposal. Bambi goes through a whole box of tissues crying.
Later, Bambi throws them both a huge, lavish engagement party, with all their friends and favorite industry people - including Krystal, who shows up with Prim's sister Baipor - and Prim and Bambi both 'go missing' for over an hour in the middle.

One day, Gorya has a scheduled shoot that immediately takes a turn - she's the one put into the stylist's chair, and gets thoroughly pampered. There's a riddle that leads her to a new location, where she gets a full photoshoot... and another riddle. One by one, she is spoiled and lavished and taken to places that are special to her and Shasha, with memories and heartfelt letters and sweet little gifts. At sunset, she ends up walking down the path in a beautiful park to the top of a hill, where Shasha waits, more than a little nervous. Gorya blurts 'yes, I will, of course I will!' before Shasha can finish the question.
Later, Gorya gets so worked up over wedding planning that she ends up designing her first full wedding collection. The collection goes mega-viral and earns them both enough to retire early, if they want to. It does not help Gorya decide which style of dress to wear at her own wedding. In the end, she has three different looks for the both of them.

Min spends months in secret, gathering industry friends to help her with a special project. She takes Praew to a very nice dinner in a private room at their favorite restaurant for wooing clients, and at the end of it, she plays the video she made - celebrating Praew's talent by showcasing some of her best work, and including amateur cell phone video of both of them all cuddly and in love. Praew reveals the ring she's bought for Min just over a week before, intending to start planning her own proposal. She says Min's was the best anyway.
Later, Min gets so thoroughly stressed out trying to plan a perfect wedding - both their families, all their friends, important business people, all the pomp and circumstance, second guessing, trying not to miss a single detail - that Praew tells her to stop, they can just elope. They do, and then throw a casual party for all their friends to celebrate with them, so Min can drink beer and wear trousers and dance until she's a sweaty mess, and she doesn't have to invite any still-homophobic family members.
