never in my life have i experienced a work of literature more profoundly sublime than the mountain in the sea by ray nayler. i was moved to tears on multiple occasions and i truly cannot express how much of an impact this book has had on my life. it has everything i could ever ask for: masterful storytelling in every page, characters with depth and personality more than i imagined possible, a setting and worldbuilding both beautiful and horrific, all wrapped up with all the themes i have been transfixed by for years. it perfectly blurs every line between the living and the not, the human and the nonhuman, the good and the evil. there is no praise high enough on this blue earth that i can give to mr. nayler, and it is unlikely this book will ever leave my thoughts for decades to come.
