#i'm a panelka truther #i think the vitriol against “commie blocks” outside of eastern europe and online is mostly based on two things #1. a lot of the “commie blocks” westerners see in media today are soviet examples that have been rotting and neglected for 30+ years #(and a beautiful luxury hotel would also look like shit after that long!)#2. it's part of wider stereotypes about bad parts of living in the soviet union #(most of which were made up by americans)#i think theyre good urbanism #they can be pleasant to live in+around - especially as parts of a bigger well-planned urban fabric #i'd bet a lot of the people who think a panelka would suck to live in #live in a big single family house with a lawn and a fence #and can't imagine their day to day lived experience extending outside of their property line #just saying #dear reader: if you live outside of eastern europe and your first thought of “commie blocks” is #drab - rotting - miserable-looking - dirty concrete apartment buildings #please i'm begging you go look at new or refurbished examples (and also look at the courtyards and urban fabric that usually surround them)#and have your horizons expanded #a panelka is a part of a city not a hermetically sealed bomb shelter #the art is absolutely breathtaking by the way - great shading #great environment #etc etc
