Thoughts over JCVTU.
First off all, as an Asian myself, I’ve been dreaming to see this kind of representation that is written well and comfortably in the west, since I was a little kid. Instead of people telling me that it’s okay to be myself, it was how tan and or the palest person I could be. It was eye surgery ads on how to make your eyes less almond shaped and more like the west. Getting blue contacts and wanting if I was supposed to look like that on TV.
And that’s the kind of stuff that I had grown up with, Espically in the west, with no kind of inspiration or representation of who I am as a person. Being heard on TV or non White characters in the early 2000’s? Now that’s a joke. But I wanted it to be real. And it is, 20 years later.
Jentry Chau felt like a homage to my own life, my culture and heritage and identity. I didn’t see any stereotypes that I was mocked for in school, but it was so relatable for me to be in Jentry’s own shoes, but just also properly representing Chinese culture.
The emperor’s robes? Seeing Chinese folklore and mythology be accurately drawn with gorgeous aesthetics and art styles? Knowing that feeling of isolation and not being able to fit in because you’re seen as “demonic”? The fact that the characters all properly said Chinese names?
The commonly known fact that families don’t communicate that well and our actions have downfalls? The way that the parents call their children common Chinese pet names. I love it so much. I’d always remember how happy when I was seeing the trailer for the show.
Thank you, the show for existing and making me feel loved and heard.
Please, if you haven’t gone to see the show yet, I’d advise watching it. I… there’s so much I love about it but I’m afraid it’s gonna take up the whole post.
