| Summer Memories ☀️ |
Ruu sits under the stone arch of the ceremonial site, rocking side to side and humming a quiet tune to himself. Today is rather clear, weather wise. Still Ruu can almost taste the fog that used to hang over Tsurumi — after so long living under fog, sometimes the fresh air tastes funny. Unnatural.
The condition of the site, however, is something Ruu is already familiar with. He has watched as it weathered and broke down into the state it is in today. The alter is gone, corroded into rocks that are undoubtedly scattered around the area, worn down until no one can tell the difference between it and any other stone. Similarly, Ruu's blood is long since gone. It stained the ground for a while, maybe a few tens of years, before rain and fog wore it away.
As his gaze drifts, Ruu stops humming and begins mumbling to himself, reenacting snippets of conversations as he looks over where the other ghosts used to stand.
"'Whatever the case, old man, just mind your own mushrooms,' says Granny Una. 'Hey now, the Fluorescent Fungus are the good stuff, alright?', says Grampa Abe." Ruu recounts under his breath, "'Look at you, Kito-nii, you've got two guesses in a row!' says Kina-chan. 'I wonder... Does Grandpa Mata also not know about what happened so long ago?' says Kito-kun."
Ruu's eyes stop on where his dad and Chise used to stand.
"...'The Great Thunderbird will surely be pleased with the ceremony this time...'"
Ruu stops swaying and pulls up his knees, hugging them close and putting his chin on top. After a moment of silence, he looks away from that spot and starts singing to himself — the same song he sang to Kapatcir on Seirai. The song echoes across the island, sound uninterrupted by any hint of fog.
Lots of things are the same on Tsurumi Island, but lots of things are different too.
so so so much of genshin is about personhood. how it's defined, how it's developed, how an identity is constructed or maintained or shattered or discarded or reformed. so much of it specifically is about the tension between personhood and duty, how people cope, whether they're consumed by the mask, how they keep sight of the 'true' self or if a true self even exists. how all of these things impact their relationships with other people. the loneliness of being surrounded by people but not seen or known. contradictorily the terror of being known even as you long for it. the way that people are dehumanized by both positions of power and positions of powerlessness, as gods and tools and weapons and leaders and so on and so forth. the boundaries between self and other, how memory informs identity, whether the self can be transcended and what one stands to lose or gain by doing so, whether there is worth in one's individual and very temporary experience of the world. whether self-determination is possible and what it means for your personhood if it's not.
this is obviously not the only main theme in genshin, and it exists in conversation with other major themes. however looking at the narrative through this lens this helps us answer questions such as 'why do 4 out of 7 archons so far have some sort of deceased mirrorself' 'why did we have to stop antagonists from assimilating people into a gestalt-consciousness a minimum of 3 times' 'why is wanderer the real true main character of genshin impact' (struck from the record for personal bias) 'why does suicide and suicidal ideation come up so much' 'why does this sometimes deeply frustrating game still scratch my brain after 5 years' (that's themes babey!! that's all the things i like and go crazy for!!)
adding to the list 'why do dottore's segments even exist if they were just gonna all get killed offscreen immediately'
and i was being tongue-in-cheek abt it but this IS why you can find parallels to wanderer anywhere you look, if you feel inclined to go looking. bc he is one of the characters tied most strongly & directly to some of genshin's biggest Themes
(also, *5 out of 7, fuck)
well and dottore is currently the antagonist most strongly & directly tied to these themes so you can probably add 'why did we get 2 dottore boss fights' to the list as well. In a way this too is *pr specialists tackle me offstage*
