He took a few sips from the teacup, then sighed as he lowered it, looking back at his former master. She waited patiently for him to speak.
âI thought I was prepared to be knighted,â he said. âAnd you must have thought so, too. But I⊠this wasnât what I was trained for. I was prepared to go out into the world being called âMaster Jediâ, not⊠âGeneralâ.â His voice was even, but his distaste and anxieties pooled around the word in other ways. Even the least Force-sensitive stranger could probably have picked it out, and his former Master knew the currents of his emotions far better than that.
âYouâre afraid,â she said. âWhat are you afraid of?â
Isnât that obvious? he was tempted to say â in his younger years, he often had. But he wasnât a padawan anymore, and heâd absorbed the truth that teachers didnât ask you to perform sums because they didnât know the answers themselves, they asked so youâd learn how to do it and to show that you could.
âThe war,â he said. Too broad, too nebulous and unhelpful. âBeing responsible as a military commander â all the men whose lives will be in my hands.â
She nodded, and sat back as she thought for a moment.
âOur missions have always put lives in our hands,â she said. âPeople depending on us to resolve disputes and crises that have far-reaching consequences. Maybe not so immediately as in battle, but no less critical.â
âThatâs true,â he said, looking down. He could think of such missions heâd had as a padawan. Heâd been able to overcome his doubts then, but now...
âHave faith in yourself,â his former master said. âHave faith in the Force, and in your men. Have faith that many more will survive because of you.â
