“I’m wearing a Guess shirt, some capris and ballet flats, all thrifted. As well with my staple vintage orchid necklace, I wear it all the time, inspired by my brand @avigarden. What inspires my style currently is shopping sustainably, having that nostalgic ’vintage’ vibe, but also with a twist of futurism & being myself. I love whatever makes me feel good and confident.“

Hi! Not sure if you've answered this before (sorry if you have), but I was wondering what first made you interested in Rothko's work, and how long ago that was? Thanks!
I think I mostly covered this a few days ago but I'm not really sure when it was, it was part of a general interest in modern art and Rothko stood out. So certainly I was painting fake Rothko Easter eggs by the time I was 14 and by the time I was 16 I had a poster from the works on paper retrospective book.
My friends all thought I was nuts. This may be a common experience for some of us here.
I got into jazz at the same time and similarly no one I knew liked it. And I'm not sure why I did but it was for a compatible reason to why I liked abstract expressionism. I didn't understand it right away but I could tell the people doing it were sincere and I thought that I should also take it seriously if that was the case.
I was a strange kid
My husband doesn’t understand art. He’s always hated museums and felt out of place hearing people talk about artwork. He said he feels like everyone else who “gets art” got the book on how to when they were born, and those who don’t either got the book and never opened it, or just never did. He thinks he never got one.
Last night, he saw some of your posts over my shoulder and asked me what I was looking at. I asked him “what does it look like to you?”, showing him some paintings and seeing if any caught his eye. It turned into us spending 30 minutes looking through Rothkos, talking about what they look like to him, how some look like looking up from the water as one sinks to the bottom, or the sun beaming down on a wheat field, or even what it looks like behind your eyelids when you close your eyes.
Afterward, he kind of just looked at me, surprised and then it clicked. All he said was “I get it now” before walking away. I think it was a really special moment for him, a moment where he didn’t feel like some doofus standing in the middle of an art gallery confused at what he’s looking at.
Anyways…just wanted you to know. Thought it would be a fun story to recount to you. Your persistence in preserving Rothko’s art online made a difference for my husband in an immense way.
That's a really great story. Thank you so much for sharing it.
