Lil history lesson

So my dad told me this interesting thing one day, and I’m not sure whether or not it’s true but it’s pretty cool.

So, I’ve heard of the American slang “I dig it” meaning ‘I like it’ or ‘I’m down for it’, right? (Not sure whether it’s still used or not). Well he said it comes from back in the day in America when black people and irish people were slaves or poor working on farms/ranches, there was a language barrier. The Irish would say to the other workers “An dtuigeann tú?” meaning “Do you understand?” When given orders or instructions. Because thuigeann sounds like “dig-an”, the others would reply “I dig it” letting them know they understand.

Just thought it was pretty cool.
