no literally same but also opposite?? i’m a post hard launch bandwagoner but i’d heard of dan and phil peripherally beforehand and i was under the impression that they were a couple who had recently confirmed that they’d been together for a while lol kind of like shayne and courtney from smosh. that led to me googling “when did dan and phil get together” out of curiosity only to find out at the time that they canonically either hadn’t or hadn’t really confirmed it, even though for some reason i’d thought i’d heard something about them confirming that they were together a few years back— i think what i’d heard about was dan’s video. and then about a month after that i got the hard launch in my recommended videos on youtube lol

i kind of feel like nolan’s penelope read more to me as a traditional athena than zendaya’s character did

My issue with Nolan’s odyssey isn’t even historical accuracy anymore. Yes, I think it would have been really cool to lean into the Mycenaean aesthetic and see a historically faithful adaptation, but I can respect a strong artistic choice to move away from that, and I think it can be a cool reflection about the ever changing nature of these stories. After all, the odyssey was told through oral storytelling, and varied quite a lot depending on who was telling it. We only have one version.

The issue is that it doesn’t seem like he’s making any strong or compelling artistic choices. Everything is bland and dark like the eight billion other period pieces we’ve seen. I’m just bored.

zero stars for nolan because odysseus, on his journey home to ithaca, was NOT visited by a ghost that tells him that once he reaches his home, once he slays all his enemies and sets his house in order he must do one last thing before he can rest. the ghost does NOT tell him to pick up an oar, walk inland, keep walking, until somebody mistakes that oar for a shovel. for that would be the place that no man has ever been troubled by the sea. and that's where he'd find peace.
