btw there's nothing wrong with intergenerational friendships and it is in fact super important for teens to have healthy, respectful relationships with the adults in their lives because it will help them more easily identify when an adult is being toxic, manipulative, or otherwise unsavory if they have healthy relationships to go off of.

"A grown ass adult shouldn't have anything in common with a teenager" okay so you're either operating off of an assumption that either teenagers don't have anything of worth to contribute to a conversation, or that adults aren't allowed to have fun hobbies.

I talked to my teenage cousin for like an hour the other day about character motivations and the core themes of one piece and had a blast talking to her! She had some real insightful things to say!

Teenagers are fully realized and complex human beings! You can talk to them about music, books, video games, hobbies, etc. Stop being weird about it

When I was a teenager I used to be obsessed with evolution and had many online friends who were evolutionary biologists. There were people of all ages on our forums but given the subject matter the average age was probably around 40 or 50. I had some great friends in that group, many of them between double and quadruple my age.

Except this time it's all correctly labeled so when I start experiencing issues related to them I'm not just drowning in undefined pain.

I'm like: "ah shit the Childhood Neglect container is leaking all over everything! I better mop it up and put it in a new container"

And sometimes something comes up and I'm like: "ah. This belongs in the religious trauma box. Let me put it away and then I can do art until I feel better"

You unpack your trauma to organise it and correctly label it do you know how to handle it. But you still pack it away so you can live your actual life

I did not become scared or distrustful of Muslims after 9/11, despite the fact my country, my state, was directly attacked. For those who don't know, YouTube will be adding AI age verification for US-based users starting August 13th. This will attempt to use "the types of videos a user is searching for, the categories of videos they have watched, or the longevity of the account," to determine their age, regardless of what birthdate they have entered. If an adult is incorrectly determined to be a child, they will need to give YouTube a government-issued ID or a credit card to verify their age. As with many such things, YouTube claims it is for the children's safety. Obviously, I am all for protecting children, and I don't want them to be exposed to things they shouldn't see, but this is most likely more about data collection. Even if it was about children's safety, this was the logic used for creating YouTube Kids, and we can all see how "safe" that is.

If you don't want to directly send your driver's license to Google, you'll need to deal with "age appropriate product experiences and protections," such as "digital wellbeing tools" and disabling personalized ads. The second part is because in the US, it is illegal to collect certain information about people under the age of 13. Now, the people at Google (which owns YouTube) love collecting information about their users, but they don't want to get in trouble, and they believe AI moderation is the answer. Not only can the AI work around the clock, but if anything goes wrong, they can say it was the machine that made the mistake, not them. And, as with any moderation, there will be mistakes (again, look at YouTube Kids).

Because of this, creators and viewers alike are planning to stop using the site starting on August 13th. I personally doubt YouTube will care much, at least at first, but if they lose enough ad revenue, they might reconsider their decision. YouTube says they'll be rolling this out to a small test group first, so it might not affect you right away, but if nothing is done, it will soon. If you're an American who uses YouTube regularly, I encourage you to join, whether just for a day, or as long as it takes. And if you have kids, please teach them internet safety and monitor their internet access so that companies can't make this garbage excuse anymore.

If you have the YouTube viewing habits of a teenager — watch out.

Doctors purposefully give people very conservative life expectancy estimates because it is better for the person to have their affairs in order long before it is necessary than to be shocked by how rapidly their health is declining. This should be obvious but you would not believe the amount of people who are like “My father was given 3 months to live 5 months ago. This is proof all doctors are idiots and stupid. Look at him. They will also try to ready you for the worst possible outcome, your doctor warning you your child may never be able to walk and may not reach adulthood is not them wishing your child never gains the ability to walk and dies in childhood, nor is it an attempt to scare you. It’s not that they “Just don’t know shit.” it’s that the outcome of a certain illness can range drastically and your child was fortunate enough to beat the odds.
