"One with the hounds"
I am one with the hounds
Curled up at your feet.
Loyal and unwavering as you kick me,
On my hands and knees I bow.
Lapping up your filthy scraps,
animalistic in my desperate hunger,
Your trash to me is gold.
Like the hounds who guard your doorway
To you I can do no harm.
My anger for others is plentiful,
And my rage unending also,
But never does it turn to you.
I wound myself for your protection
Unasked but so willingly so.
Chained outside you could leave me,
And still as the rain floods in
The heavens crying for my mercy,
I drown in the forgiveness
I so foolish like the hound,
Beaten and ignored, starved and unloved,
Afford to you and only you.
