Who’s the one clinging to an idealized younger self now? Edgeworth still gets more credit than Phoenix: it’s not a third grader he’s trying to resurrect fifteen years later, but some stupid hotshot attorney. One who’s too pure and good and capable to do any wrong. But really? Edgeworth thinks he can bring that Phoenix back by cutting this one off from the one connection he has?
“You know me. When have I ever done what’s wise?” He pulls Trucy’s hat down over his head and turns away, hiding his eyes twofold.
“What’s next, giving me The Talk? Because you’re right, that was flirting. Little more than that, tonight.” Phoenix pulls out from his pocket what Kristoph slid across the table in a moment where Edgeworth was away. A room key to the Gatewater Hotel and a condom. He’s not exactly presenting them, but it’s not hard to see what’s in his hand.
They had been headed on this trajectory for a while, but of course Kristoph would put this on the table when Edgeworth was visiting. According to Maya (… and a few others) it was obvious to anyone with a brain that Phoenix was in love with Edgeworth. (Which really made Phoenix feel great about his own intelligence, given that he’d only made it all the way to that conclusion about a week before State vs. Gramarye.) Of course Kristoph would see this as “making them official,” laying his claim or whatever the fuck.
Sex isn’t really a big deal for Phoenix. Yeah, it’s pleasant, but on a similar level to getting donuts. He’s not exactly opposed to getting physical with Kristoph, but it’s going to open up a whole new layer of meanings and implications and ties. One that would still be easier to navigate than what would happen if he refused.
He couldn’t care less what most people would think of him for this. But Edgeworth just as much as said that Phoenix is tainting himself by talking to Kristoph. What would he make of this?
